I feel like I have to post this every time this comes up.

For business providing iPads to its customers for mail/calendar etc, 16GB is MORE than enough. Hell, for my own mother 16GB is plenty enough.

Apple is in this for profit. If they can sell a 16GB iPad which IS usable to many people (just not you and me), then they will likely continue to do so until the price difference between 16GB and 32GB is MORE negligible.

I do see your point. But the 16GB iPad and iPhone (as well as the storage challenged iPhone 5c at 8GB) are aimed at consumers who may not know any better. It's not as if Apple only offers 16GB iOS devices on their business site.

No excuse for 16GB on a phone.

Even less on a tablet! Hope this isn't true--but the iPhone 6 points to "yes."

16 is enough for some people. Not enough people to make it into a new product. (If some OLD models hang around at 16GB and reduced prices, that's another matter. Wrong choice for most people, but there are low-end users.)
yes there is money. Because of the 16-64gb gap Apple's ASP increased to over $700 for the iPhone 6. Makes sense to take that strategy over the the iPad line up.

In my case I bought the 64GB version last year since supplies of the Retina Mini were tight for several weeks and that's all they had available. That said, I've come to actually use enough of the extra capacity, so in my case, this would be a $100 price drop. I agree that the 16/64/128GB capacities incentivize upselling, though.

This. The 64GB and 128GB just got cheaper by $100 each. I usually get the 64GB for myself... just saved $100 on it!

Who says Apple never cuts prices?

Sorry, not buying it.

It doesn't take much content on top of a base iOS install to not have enough room left to do an OTA update.

IMO, it's indefensible to still sell 16GB iPads and iPhones when the cost differential to 32GB is so small. Not because it's being cheap (which it is) but because it impacts the future experience of new iOS users.

it's pretty crazy how much people seem to only focus on the negative.

All top posts here are about the (bad) news that 16gb is still the base storage option, with no top comment about the (good) news that this will be the first 2gb ram ios device.

+1

16GB of storage?

What is this, 2010?

Not only no, but hell no. There's no excuse here, NAND flash prices have fallen to LESS than a third of what they were in 2010. There is no way in hell that I am paying $500 (in the year 2014!) for a 16GB tablet. And I'm most definitely not paying $100 more just to avoid a 16GB tablet. Ridiculous.

Very few users actually run in to situations where they notice a lack of RAM, but almost every user out there will run out of storage on a 16GB device. My 78 year old grandfather bought a 16GB ipad (back in 2011...) and every month or so I have to come over and help him delete things off of it. He doesn't use the thing that intensively either.

That is all I would need... I use match in itunes so I need zero storage for music, and I use icloud for my camera roll so I need zero storage for pictures. Essentially it is just an internet / reading / consumption device with no need for much storage (for me anyway).

Take a look at this users signature:

Laptop --> 17" Hi-Res AG 2.3 Sandy Bridge / 16GB RAM / Crucial M4 SSD 512GB / 10.9
iPhone --> 128GB iPhone 6+ GSM
iPad --> rMini White 64GB AT&T LTE

:D

32 GB is all I need.

Do we know if 2GB will make any difference to how frequently Safari tabs reload?

That is good stuff.
I've been waiting for the new one for a month already... I really need an iPad as mine was stolen in the airport 2 months ago....

Does it usually go on sale in the same day, or will we have to wait? How was it one year ago? I don't think it will be the same due to crazy demand on iPhone 6, but I was just wondering...

More often than not, it's the same day. I would guess that they'll be on sale on Thursday.

ahahahahhaha, 16gb
what is apple thinking

My guess is "All of the competition offer 16GB options, some even as little as 8GB, so we're right in line with the industry"

Also, lets not pretend like NAND storage manufacturing capability worldwide isn't running near complete capacity. Theres literally not enough chips around for everyone.

....

How much NAND production capability isn't already locked up in contracts?

Hint: near zero. The industry can't produce the stuff fast enough.

He is mad, because offering a 16 gb version at normal price (not heavily discounted) is quite a spit in the face of intelligent consumers who do like Apple devices otherwise. It really literally borders on the limits of being rude to loyal customers.

Do you have proof? After all, right now you can buy a 64GB USB 3.0 flash drive for less than $20. And it uses *EXACTLY* the same NAND, there is literally no difference. If there was such a shortage of NAND why have prices plummeted to such levels?

If Apple isn't capable of following other manufactures by moving to a 32GB base model then they are not nearly as intelligent as I thought they were.

This isn't 2011, it's been years since a tsunami closed all those NAND factories. Don't kid yourself, it's pure and simple greed.

Many iPad consumers don't even have computers bro.

updating to iOS 9 update is still (going to be) a valid point, bro.

----------

I never connect my ipad to my computer so the chance of that happening is zero. :)

iOS 9 update.
requires 10 gb of space.

Ahahahahahahaha. What are you thinking? It's all personal preference.

For someone 16GB might be more than enough.

might as well ship 8gb. some people just want netflix. right?

I'm sure these are going to be great iPads (basically like an "S" version of the iPhone), but I can't recall ever being less enthusiastic about an iPad announcement. Used to be I would read every bit of news I could get for weeks in advance and then await the keynote. Now it's kinda like OK, there are new ones that are a little faster. Touch ID should be great, except 1) Many people never take the iPad out of their home and don't need a passcode, and 2) as far as we know, it still can't and won't be used for true user switching (which would really make it useful on an iPad).

What other manufacturers? The two main tablets out there, the Kindle HDX 8.9 as well as the Samsung S BOTH start at 16 GB for a base model.

Also, IDC has a report called "Worldwide NAND Flash Demand and Supply 2Q13-4Q14 and 2013-2017" that states in summarized reports (the actual report costs $3,000) :

"Summary:
2013 market conditions became more favorable for the NAND vendors as demand continued to be healthy amid constrained supply. 2014 also appears favorable, as supply is expected to continue to be insufficient to demand."

I think that's pretty clear, no?

32 GB is all I need.
Don't use me as an example, my company buys me iphones and ipads and it is their policy to get me the most expensive one  Seriously, it's dumb but I don't complain. 16GB is all I need for an iPad - I actually need more on the phone since I load it with apps and take lots of pics and videos...

16 GB? Then sadly again no iPad for me. My Nexus must hold out for another while....

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha........
Omg, you absolutely MUST buy the bottom of the barrel entry level of everything, whether it fits your needs or not???
Or are you seriously unaware that 16gb is merely an OPTION... & you may choose more, if needed... most likely quadrupling the amount to 64gb for another $100?

I suspect that the slow uptake rates of iOS 8 may cause them to rethink the base size next year (or even mid-cycle) so that the release of iOS 10 goes more smoothly in 2016. More so than the bugs (which are present in every new iOS release), it's the lack of space that is causing users to hold off. Many don't know that they can update by plugging into iTunes, and Apple's pop-up message doesn't mention it, either.
