I do see your point. But the 16GB iPad and iPhone (as well as the storage challenged iPhone 5c at 8GB) are aimed at consumers who may not know any better. It's not as if Apple only offers 16GB iOS devices on their business site.

Some consumers who don't know better might buy these, but if they buy it at a physical store the clerk will probably steer them in the right way.

I see iPads used all over the places in businesses or in airports where they basically have nearly no Apps on them. Many are used for just sales systems, so they are running basically one App all the time. 16gb is fine in those cases and so should continue to be available as long as the OS doesn't take up too much room.

16GB iPad... is it still 2010?? Wake up :apple:! People will buy more apps and music if they have enough room for them. Just a thought.

Not really in the market for the iPad Air 2 but interested to see what comes out regardless.

At least we get the 2gb of ram. You can't fix the 1gb of ram on the iPad Air 1 no matter how much money you are willing to spend so getting 2gb of ram in the 2nd gen is more important than storage (IMHO).

However it is disappointing that Apple seems to be sticking with 16gb for the base model. I imagine like many users (and an increasingly number of users as iOS grows) I don't need that much storage. Certainly not 64gb. But 16gb (really 13gb) is just slightly not enough. So I got the 32gb model. Still being forced to get the higher model when I have zero need for 64gb of storage doesn't benefit me AT ALL. It just puts more money in Apple's pocket. But I guess that is the point.

I encourage anyone who doesn't like this (but still wants an iPad) to wait until the higher storage models hit the refurb store. That's what I'll be doing if the situation stays the same for the iPad Air 3. No way am I paying $100+the base price just so that I can have 20gb (the amount I actually need) in 2014-2015.

Jesus Chache Christ!
This thread makes me feel like I'm on crazy pills.
Listen- I'm going to break this down:
This may seem anecdotal, but as I have been working for Verizon for the last five years, 4 years on the west coast in an affluent neighborhood & the last year on the east coast, in a more financially repressed neighborhood... I'd say that I have observed a fairly accurate cross-section of mobile habits across the U.S.
I'd say it's almost precisely a 50/50 split, when it comes to users of iOS devices. Roughly half are voracious app hounds, love all their games, social apps, snapping pics, etc... The other half are the older crowd- FaceBook, phone calls, texting, & GPS only. This 50% NEVER even approach the halfway mark on their 16gb of storage. Never!!!! And I'm talking about half of the users I see.
For ALL of these users the 16gb is ALREADY overkill. It would be a horrible disservice to the shareholders for Apple to give them even more wasted space for no reason. This couldn't be more of a non-issue! You people are literally crazy. Lol, if 16gb isn't enough for you, you have ALREADY been paying $100 more to upgrade it!!!!!!!!!!! Soooooo, now the ONLY difference is that $100 buys you twice the amount. How can anyone not be stoked?!

Once 2GB is confirmed, I'll be replacing my Air 1's with 2's. The financial hit will be better to suffer now than next year when 1GB doesn't cut it anymore. 1GB models might all be harder to unload once the lack of processor ram becomes an issue. Besides, since iOS 8, both my Airs already seem to show issues due to RAM limitations and wifi ac will make the new ones perform all the better.

Unless you really need ac wifi, wouldn't it be better to wait till next year to get the air 3? 8 shouldn't be too bad on 1gb of RAM, and by waiting till ios 9 to get the air 3, you'd gain a lot more of a performance boost than just 1gb of RAM.

Even if Apple decides to unveil proper multi-tasking, it will most likely be buggy until ios 9 too :p

ahahahahhaha, 16gb
what is apple thinking

That you'll pay an extra $100 for 64 GB. ;)

That's the point. They get an extra $100-200 out of people this way. They're hanging onto the 16 GB for dear life. They know people will pay an extra bit for more storage, so why give us that storage for less?

16gb option still? That is most heinous.

That would be for business. There is an actual advantage to limited Flash storage in these devices for business. It helps keep the device focused on the task it was purchased for.

Personally the 2GB of RAM pisses me off more, because it's an acknowledgment that to run iOS 8 2 GB of RAM is optimal. But they still only put 1 GB in the iphone, released a month ago, which makes the decision was made at the top to sell a device without the optimized RAM, when putting 2 GB of RAM instead of 1 would have been no trouble at all on Apple's part.

Enterprise.

16GB is cheap and when you're purchasing in bulk, every penny matters. 16GB is enough for most business needs. Most employees would need just a few work specific apps and the native communication ones from Apple.

It isn't just that it is cheap. The lack of storage prevents large amounts of data from being kept on the device. It forces the use of servers managed by the company. It also eliminates the ability for users to load a bunch of unapproved apps though such devices are usually locked down pretty good.

Err not really. First off the iPad simply needs more RAM to support the common use cases on that device. The higher resolution of the screens also have an Impact here.

1GB of RAM in the cell phone is stupid considering where technology has gone since its introduction however realistically if they could put 2GB in the iPhone, iPad should be getting 4GB. When it comes right down to it iPad is no different than any other computer, more RAM is a positive.

if you dont offer 16 gb someone will complaint because there a someone who use ipad just to browsing and not playing games, some people are not rich wants to buy apple product at minimal price just to experience owning an apple products

There's nothing more u can do to an iPad.... Its has a Retina display,, your just making it more sharper, but it still does what it does....

Apart from Touch ID, its a finished product...

How much more can u add to a product ? something that will make users eyes glee like Touch ID, but that's already there.

I say there is noting else, but bigger, slimmer and slightly better Retina display.... all of those are mere differences since we already have an iPad Air.

I get the impression that Apple Store employees are trained not to steer people but to let them make their own decisions.

Yep! All the people whining. Here need to realize that these devices aren't meant for you. They target a specific portion of Apples market that is actually very large. 16 GB is more than enough for these markets and at times more storage is a negative. Not every iPad out there is sold for personal usage.

Sorry, not buying it.

It doesn't take much content on top of a base iOS install to not have enough room left to do an OTA update.

IMO, it's indefensible to still sell 16GB iPads and iPhones when the cost differential to 32GB is so small. Not because it's being cheap (which it is) but because it impacts the future experience of new iOS users.

Eh. I don't take photos or keep music on my iPad. Any music or video I watch/listen to is streamed. I'd rather save the money and get the 16gb one. I'm sure there are others like me. And for those like you, you'll get double the storage on the 32gb option (or save $100 off the 64gb) that you would have bought anyway!

No sense of imagination here at all apparently. Here are a few ideas:
  1. Faster performance. im not talking a minor update to A8X either
  2. Apple Pay terminal functionality. this would be hige for small business that are mobile.
  3. A TB port for faster I/O.
  4. More physical world I/O. IPads are a long ways from"TriCoder" type fucntionality.
  5. More RAM, everybody whines about 2GB but id start to be happy with 4GB. it all depnds oc course on where iOS goes but i see so ,uch potential here.
  6. Solid state storage is hige of course and might be seen as a normal upgrade. However im talking lots of storage here like in TB not GB. not all of this should be for user data either, it should in oart be for a knowledge base for an AI.
  7. Speaking of AI's, SRI need to move to the device locally and accomplish much of its work locally instead of taking everything to Apples servers. The current approach impacts functionality and performance too much.
  8. how about addign nueral netwrk hard ware to A9 and beyond to enhance Siri and voice processing in general. Apple really needs to move beyond Von Neumaning hardware.
Apart from Touch ID, its a finished product...
Nope! It is just beginning to realize some of the potential of the platform and ever improving technology.
How much more can u add to a product ? something that will make users eyes glee like Touch ID, but that's already there.
Well it is pretty simple really as highlighted above much can be done. Short term the best thing Apple can do is Improve system performance moving us beyond 1990s levels to something more impressive. This would allow for better functionality and get rid of the lags behavior that iPad has.
I say there is noting else, but bigger, slimmer and slightly better Retina display.... all of those are mere differences since we already have an iPad Air.

I don't buy that. One of the best things they could do for iPad is to put an AI like facility on the device itself. That is Siri would be running locally for the simple and talking to other AI's in the cloud for the complex. Doing so requires significantly better performance out of the hardware we have and Siri would need its own storage independent of user accessible storage.

One of the great things about iOS is that it moves us beyond the operating system structure (user visible) we have seen for decades now. It isn't a bad interface but it is rudimentary. However you don't significnatly improve that interface bu doing more with the GUI, you really need to take the next step which is AI like functionality built into the device. Siri has a long ways to go but Apple needs to take that first step.

Yeah, like keep two tabs open in safari without reloading. THAT would be a welcomed change from where we find ourselves currently.

Count, I hope for your sake not only does the new iPad have the extra RAM but that it also it cures the safari ills you suffer from. Seriously!

I'm not upgrading anyway but more RAM is never a bad thing so I hope they do it.

-"I'll be mad if the next iPad still has 1 GB of RAM!!!"

*next iPad has 2 GB of RAM*

-"Only 16 GB of storage??"

Apple should ditch 16GB, because 16GB these days are useless especially for those who has a lot of apps, music, videos, and others files stored on their device. And 16GB isn't exactly 16GB it even has a smaller capacity like mine which is actually 12.7 GB only. And becuase of that, I have to constantly re-install my app just to remove hidden data to make a free space. 32GB should be the base storage now.

I'm not all that hyped for a new iPad currently, but I'll be watching later this week.

I think the platform needs to evolve a bit an embrace more hybrid elements.

Despite what Apple says today, this is the direction tablets are going.

I've owned 3 iPads, and for me to buy a 4th the platform will need to progress a bit.
