Why all the negatives? This is positive! Competition spurs innovation.

Threatened Apple fanboys.

That's basically like saying without driving what's a car good for.

The iPad is meant for e-mail, Internet & media. Media includes movies, TV Shows, home movies, music, books, magazines, comics etc.
Unfortunately it's pretty rubbish at these things.

Mail client is OK as of 4.2.
But Safari (and internet browsing in general) on the iPad is painfully slow. Most Android phones running 2.1/2.2/2.3 browse the internet twice as fast and with worse hardware. Apple hasn't been improving browsing speed at all and it's still a horrible experience. Also, no flash.
YouTube is a slow hunk of crap on the iPad. On a 20mbit connection, 720p videos on my netbook, laptop, and desktop running Windows 7 buffer the entire video (of 3 min. length for example) in a few seconds. The iPad? It struggles to keep up with the video, a lot of the times just pausing for half a minute to buffer horribly slow.
Okay, fine, let's put some media on the device. Too bad. iTunes is one of the worst media managers on the planet and has quite a batch of stupid restrictions. I thought it was the best thing ever until I tried Zune software. Now I can't stand the slowness and limited experience of iTunes. And once you got your stuff on there, have fun taking it off.

Nice censorship.

The problem with this is and all devices like this is, it could be 100 times faster than an iPad, its still not going to be as nicely made and will have no proper integration as what an iPad does with a computer etc.
You mean the clunky itunes? Great converting everthing dragging it trough itunes to get it synced.

Ipad is great but the integration with the computer is ****.

Then when the iPod came along in 2001. Sure there where other devices before the iPod, but they sucked and as Jobs said they where almost impossible to use. After the iPod, the competitors rushed to the market and still after almost 10 years no one has beaten the iPod yet. I'd say partly with it being an established brand.
BS
Ipod didnt gain any ground until 2004 thats third generation btw.

The market is also flat since 2006 while smartphone sales have surpassed and are now 5 times as large.

ANd no, MP3 player were fine before the ipod, ipod improved no doubt but lets not exaggerate .

Same with iPhone not the first touch screen phone, but they really did reinvent the phone and look at all the wannabe iPhones out there now.
Again mild improvements, mostly thx to new tech becoming consumer avaible and affordable.

And android since then has surpassed iOS

The same will happen to the iPad as well in the next few years.
Dont know, I think the ipad is better in the market then the iphone or ipods (and I owned them both)

Microsoft tried and tried and tried to make a tablet computer, but they could never make one good enough and people still bought laptops/desktop machines. The iPad has solved this problem
Depends while netbook sales have gone down they still sell plenty.

But hey, when Apple gets rid of the home button in iPad 3.0, they will once again tout this "revolutionary" feature.
Going back to this point way back on the first page, why would anyone want to get rid of the home button? It serves several functions, including turning off the device all the way through to exiting a crashed app. It's kind of a plan B. Surely google would of programmed something similar into the android UI? Still, that could crash on screen and leave the user stuck. Removing the home button isn't revolutionary, it can be stupid.

Honeycomb on the other hand does look good in some respects. However, I fear google playing catchup here in it's OS in comparison to iOS 4.2. A lot of it looked plagurised there and offers nothing different to the iPad.

It'll be interesting to see if honeycomb sparks off the whole tablet market. One valid point. It'll only be as good as the apps that are developed for it. From what I've seen, android based apps still have a long way to go.

What? You're comparing a 1GHz fanless iPad to a clunky underpowered net book that runs a power hungry OS? Get with perspective here. I've not seen any tests to claim android's webkit browser is faster than apple's. I'm typing on my iPad as we speak and I've not seen it go slow once. You have an obsession for speed by the sounds of it. Give me reliability which iOS 4.2 is all about. YouTube is clunky anyway. Some videos load slower than others anyway regardless of connection.

It's not totally restricted. VLC will play anything and everything on the iPad. You can drag in whatever format VLC supports directly into the app rather than go through the iTunes formats. You need to do your research a bit more. I can take off stuff in iTunes. You just need to go to the iTunes media folder and then copy and paste it out. Simples.

Who wants to bet that 2-3 weeks after CES 2011, steve goes up on his soap box announcing the death of the iPad. Killed by all these great competitors. However, the iPad has gone, but left a successor, iPad 2. Which kills all the other competitors.

2011 is going to be very interesting! :)

Mark

Yes it is.... and if Apple ends up on top at the end of 2011, there's going to be many worried CEO's out there. 2011 looks like it's the year of serious competition for Apple... may the best man win... and I know where I'm placing my bets. :D

I don't understand this at all?

Removing media from iTunes is incredibly simple - you just highlight the song/movie/whatever in the device's media list and press the delete key.

If you want to delete a movie in the Videos app, you can even do it directly on iPad, in exactly the same way as you delete apps on the homepage.

...

if this thing is half descent my ipad will be for sale. The iPad is nice but there is so much room for improvement and Apple likes to move at a snails pace to keep dollars coming. No problem with that but Google is pushing the pace, hopefully honeycomb is more like a real OS.

it seems to me like a very effective (and funny) ad.

Really? "iPad, it's like the iPhone -- one of the most successful products in history, the one that stomped us from #1 in the phone world to nearly bankrupt".

So, I should buy the iPad then, right?

If you're going to mention your competition in an ad, you've better be ready to go toe to toe. Motorola doesn't even have a product.

I can't wait until my contract is up with Verizon. I have a Motorola Incredible and I am sick of Android. It's a good phone but I hate the way they load it with apps I do not want. It's my phone so let me delete it. I think once the iPhone hits Verizon, Android will see a big fall in sales. :D

Funny, there are so many things wrong in this post.

First, Droid Incredible is made by HTC.

Second, if you think it's your phone and you can do whatever you want, you're sadly mistaken. It takes Apple 4 years to allow users to put a wallpaper. Good luck trying to change ringtons or other notification sound.

Honeycomb will do away with all physical buttons, and the home button will be touch-based on the screen. you can hold it any way you want, and you will always have that home button in the correct orientation.
.

Hold any way you want?! that's not what they said in the iPhone ad! ;)

So far it's only hype about two vapourware products (Motorola's tablet and Honeycomb). Apple have a proven contender out there that has been in use by the public for nine months.

For those who think 2011 is going to be interesting in terms on competition, I remember thinking the same last January after CES's HP Tablet (more vapourware) and the iPad announcement.

are you being serious? he's insinuating that he isn't a master of anyone. hes being humble...

in earnest, the question itself was retarded, posed by the lady. she asks 'are you the supreme commander of android just like jobs is supreme commander of apple'

it was humbling. and i would say about 99% of individuals liked the reply.

i think you're about the .01% who likes a brilliant but smug CEO. well you have one, so there you go.

I'd say it was more self deprecating than humble. It seemed disingenuous because it belies the narcissism it requires to run a major tech company. There's a way to be confident without being a jerk

Was this ad made in 2001?

That's what I was thinking. I've spent too many years in this business to call this a good ad. It's not a good ad on any level. There is a scenario in which it could have been a good ad: If it had been released BEFORE Apple stole the entire sector with iPad.

The whole concept of linking innovation and originality with history - to create an impression of lineage is fine, as long as you get your timing right and you're not pushing an orphan. Well, not even an orphan really, because Motorola are more likely to be dealing with a still birth here. Tragic.

Motorola can't even get it's jabs right. The iPad is more like a giant iPod Touch than an iPhone.

So true. Comparing iPad with iPhone is indeed inaccurate, yet falsely complimentary! In this context, iPod is an insult. iPhone is an upgrade iPad doesn't actually deserve, or indeed need, but that's another matter. The crucial point is that for the want of identifying the correct product, Motorola have evoked the most popular smartphone on the planet in an attempt to dis their competitor. They should fire the agency.

Stupidest advertisement ever: this sucks, that sucks, this sucks, that sucks... but we won't talk about ours ('cause it sucks).

Motorola: like a computer, only not as good.

because the OS will be Android 2.4 or 3.0, dubbed Honeycomb. Bees, honeycomb. get it?

Awesome promo ad.

So let me get this right, you believe an "Awesome promo ad." is one that appeals to the minority of viewers who actually get the obviously vague analogy between a bee and an as yet unreleased and unadvertised operating system - which the majority of people will not know the name of or care about - even when it's released?

This is a tragically bad advert on so many levels. Please see my previous post for clarity.

But here's an update on some of the rules of advertising. Presenting one proposition has to be the height of any ad's ambition. The proposition here was that there is a tablet lineage based on ancient historical finds and myths. In essence that's fine.

They went for cheap, so they showed all of them [including the mythical ones] encased behind glass in a [closed] museum. That's also fine until... we discover their own offering is also encased behind glass - in the same museum! Oh my god!

But while that thought is still playing in your head, they send in a CGI bee to mess with your mind some more. The effect is to wreck any message of historical importance that might have been implanted from the other tablets. Though why anyone thought blocks of stone [tablet/slate] were cool analogies for portable devices, I'll never understand.

There was a minority smutty brigade that thought iPad was too easily linked to female products, but the massive take-up by women seems to have laid that to rest... which, coincidentally, is what I think of when I see a tablet of stone - being laid to rest!

The agency that sold this ad to Motorola must have sprinted to the bank with their sign-off cheque, thanking whichever god they believe in the client wasn't even half as smart as Apple. They got away with murder here.

Museums are dead places. They put their client's as yet unreleased product in a dead place alongside other dead products. How on earth is that an "Awesome promo ad."??

And, because I can't resist it, here's what they should have done: Identify user groups. Concentrate on user experience, features that makes whatever this thing is called... unique, and show people's faces.

Personally, I'm hoping it's a kick ass device.

Honeycomb is rumored to be tablet friendly, so this should be the first "real" Google tablet.

Remember guys... the better Android and WebOS tablets are, the better the iPads of the future will be.

Competition is a GOOD thing. :)

I'm sorry but were you born just yesterday? Motorola was the first to come out with a portable cell phone. You don't remember StarTac? The RAZR phenomenon? Motorola was the Apple of feature phones back in the day. Motorola's been in the cell business for many decades. C'mon guy, lets not forget about our mobile industry history now.

You know not what you speak of... The iphone was the first and only phone!

Putting all the ranting aside.

There is one thing that I'm sure about.

Apple have a massive lead in the new tablet marketplace.

They have made tablets COOL at last, and they have the chance with the iPad2 in 4 months time to again dominate the marketplace, and be a beacon showing everyone else how it should be done.

Also, and don't ignore this fact, making sure that hardware and technical ability wise they are the best, and the ones that everyone should spend their hard earned money on.

I have no doubt in my mind at all, that if Apple take an easy way out, feel they cannot be touched, and dismiss the competition as nothing to worry about so they, Apple, don't have to try too hard.

Apple will get swamped and lose all the lead they have gained in a flash, no pun intended.

You will have Motorola, Sony, HTC, Samsung, HP, and probably another 20 ot 30 companies in the near future working hard, with Android Honeycomb and it's successors to bring very fast, capable and quality tablets to customers.

It will be like the phone business.

1 company making the iPhone
10, 20, 30? companies making Android phones.

The same will happen with tablets if Apple thinks it does not have to bother as it can just rely on a loyal fanbase.

It my take another 2, 3 or 4 years but it will happen.

The ball is totally in Apples court on how hard they push to make their product the best, and the one normal people, not fan boys will want to own.

Whilst Apple have sold many many iPads they are not all to Apple loyalists that will stick with them, no matter what, and a percentage of people who now own the iPad would drop it instantly if something better and more suited to their needs was offered be someone else.

We will just have to wait and see what Apple do for the iPad2 and iPad3.

It'll be interesting to see if honeycomb sparks off the whole tablet market. One valid point. It'll only be as good as the apps that are developed for it. From what I've seen, android based apps still have a long way to go.

I disagree, because of for 99.999% of average Joe out there the supplied apps by default is more than enough.

:confused:That's basically like saying without driving what's a car good for.

The iPad is meant for e-mail, Internet & media. Media includes movies, TV Shows, home movies, music, books, magazines, comics etc.

All can be done on a notebook and much better at that. You can also do that on an iPhone too. My point being, the price does not fit the hardware and the hardware just falls short. It's lacking. It gives you just enough and then BAM - it can't do anymore. That's just my opinion. It's a nice device for just media, but for anything else, it's useless.

i'm so sick of people saying this. you're not telling anyone anything they don't already know....so why do people keep saying this.

it's like also telling people, oxygen is a good thing.

*DUH*

Yeah. Especially since it's not always true. Just like with oxygen.
