noob question, but do you have to uninstall FF2 and then install 3? I don't want to lose my bookmarks.

I didn't lose anything. I just dragged the new version into the folder where my old version was and had the computer replace the old with the new.

I saw this feature touted on the Firefox 3 page:

The Find As You Type feature is another handy timesaver. Rather than using the "find" bar to search for a word on page, just click anywhere on that page and start typing the word you want. Your cursor will immediately jump to the first instance of that term.

You can use it for links, too. For example, instead of moving your mouse across the page to a "learn more" link, just start typing the word and when the cursor finds it, press enter.

But, I can't seem to get it to work... is that working for other people?

I'm sticking with camino

You and me both. I was very hopeful that FF3 would make FireFox as resource-responsible as Camino is. I have an iBook G4. It's a great computer in my opinion, but it's not a speed demon. I can have twice the amount of tabs open in Camino as FireFox and take half the CPU and 40 MB less RAM. (24 open in Camino, 12 open in FF3). It's a marked improvement from 2, which I couldn't bear to use, but Camino is still champ for me.

The Linux and even Windows versions of FF3 are so much quicker/lighter than the Mac version in my experience. Why is it so slow on the Mac? Not enough open source developers on OS X? I want to love it so badly...

As previously mentioned there shouldn't be any problems. My update was flawless and retained all bookmarks/passwords/etc.

Just to be safe you can back up your Firefox folder before you update...

i love firefox. it's the only browser i use. if i have to use IE for any reason (heaven forbid it. . ), i feel as though i'm betraying my beloved firefox. i've used safari for windows. . and i'm not a fan.
long live firefox!

Too bad Opera beat them to it. While Mozilla and crew were announcing that they were going to release it last week, Opera went ahead and actually released their new version, 9.50, with a ton of fixes and features itself. Plus is available as a 32bit and 64bit program.

BL.

I was hoping for better out of FF. Safari is clearly faster (at least for me).

I'm not quite seeing how there can be such discrepancies. It seems 50/50 for people who think FF is faster and Safari is faster.

It's not even close between Safari and FF for me, on both my Macbook and iMac. Safari is still significantly and noticeably faster.

... also too bad Opera is Opera. What a shame...

There is something wrong with your install then.

This is thing that bugged me about all the beta builds... all my bookmarks autofill in the location bar, and i dont want that to happen.

How do I keep my bookmarks from auto-filling?

HA! MS sent Mozilla a cake.....

I seriously doubt that. As you can see, there are others who have shown very clearly that Safari is still faster than FF.

Let's try not being ignorant and try to have logical, fact-based discussions shall we?

There is nothing wrong with my install, there is nothing wrong with both my MacBook and iMac.

Firefox vs Safari

Well, I tried FF3 for a little while, but there are some things that will make me stick with Safari:

1- When I drag a tab in FF3 it doesn't turn into a new window like in Safari and I really use this very often.

2- There's no resizable text boxes like in Safari

3- Even with the "native look and feel" it's kinda ugly. The top part is a mess, the buttons don't look very good, and the whole thing takes quite more screen space then Safari...

The only advantage I had with Firefox was PicLens, but I just saw that the new version now supports Safari 3. ;)

Ahh,

I was hoping this would be fixed by the time the full version was out. But it STILL doesn't work with iWeb '08 sites. This renders the browser completely useless to me and all of my friends because we all post our family updates in iWeb '08. There's a lot of slander saying it's apple or it's mozilla. That's not the point. If you're really going to try and take market share out there, it needs to just work. The fact that every iWeb user can no longer visit their sites and see its javascript glory means that this is an immediate downgrade. I'd choose IE 7 over firefox now but instead will just stick with Safari. It pains me to say that.

Mozilla Firefox bug 405903
Apple bug 5928040

Ouch, so much for FF3. My website is done in iWeb '08 and sure enough it will not work in FF3. Until that is fixed I will be going back to FF2.

Heck of a slap in the face.

I think im gonna be a firefox convert.

I tried FF3, and it is in fact quite fast... big improvement over FF2. FF2 wasnt slow at loading pages but i found initial start-up to be slow, and since Safari started up WAY faster then FF2, and yet managed to load pages at around the same speed I stuck with Safari.

BUt now, FF3 NOT only initially starts up even faster then safari (icon hardly bounces once in my dock) but pages load faster too. Plus all those add-ons and themes. I hate to say it but Safari has been beat by a long shot.

change wont even be noticable tho, i've installed a Safari theme, and addons to make it looks alot like safari (someone posted them in this topic) plus I even went as far to set regular safari icon, as firefox's icon in the dock. So really, the only way you could tell im using firefox is if you used the features in it, or looked in my menu bar how it says "firefox".

I'm sticking with Safari.

2-finger scrolling is SO much smoother and FF3 doesn't have native support for 3-finger back, which I use all the time now that I have a new MBP! I also perceive Safari to be much faster than FF3.

and of course it still can't pass the acid3 test. Although neither does the current build of safari, both the nightly webkit build and safari 4 can.

Can someone post the scores/screenshot of FF3 running the acid1, acid2 and acid3 tests? I just tested the current build of Safari and it passes acid1 and acid2 and gets a 75 on acid3.

http://acid1.acidtests.org/
http://acid2.acidtests.org/
http://acid3.acidtests.org/

It may not be the official Safari release, but it makes me glad that the nightly WebKit build passes with a score of 100. I like using an OS that doesn't need to have it's web browser replaced.

D'OH! Upon upgrading to FF3 consider this. If you've ever used a beta version of FF3 and then switched back to FF2, when you upgrade again you will "lose" all bookmarks added since your switch back to FF2. FF3 stores bookmarks a bit differently than FF2.
