I still have no idea what the protective cover is for and why it would cause issues with the screen? I have a fold on pre order from ATT, Im not going to cancel the pre order as I can always return the phone but it does cause some concern that only a handful of youtubers have the devices and not even 2 full days 4 devices have failed.

The phone comes inside a wrapper that says on it "do not remove the protective layer".

50% of the failed devices were from people removing the layer and tweeting that "Samsung should have a warning" before they even noticed.

That's what happens when you open a device looking at a camera not the actual device.

To be fair from my perspective, I never used the Galaxy fold, so I can’t judge it just based off what others have said, as I try to reserve my own experience once I have the opportunity. The comment I keep seeing the most is that ‘This is why Apple never made a folding iPhone’, but the reality is, Samsung doesn’t make a bad product, but this product with the hardware maturity obviously is not on par with what it could have been.

I commend Samsung for being one of the first with a folding smart phone, but in the end, it’s not about being the first to the market, it’s about bringing a better product to the consumer, and it appears like the Galaxy fold is not that Product.

I'm gonna have to finally agree with you on this one...well I was clearly waiting for the Note 10 or Note 11............

Haha we’ve been agreeing more as of late. Samsung makes good products, but they should have held this one back. Clearly not ready for consumers. At the very least, they can address this now and try to fix the issue before bringing it to market. Damage may be done though, I don’t see it selling regardless.

S H O C K I N G!

Samsung CERTAINLY wouldn’t just rush something half-baked to the market just to be first....would they? I could have predicted this was going to happen. But to happen to reviewers....wow. How innovative. They killed a product before it was barely released

Samsung this week provided reviewers with Galaxy Fold devices for some hands-on time, and it appears the folding smartphone may be suffering from some serious flaws. Three of the reviewers who received a Galaxy Fold have already experienced failures, all of which focus on the display.

The Verge's Dieter Bohn says that his Galaxy Fold device broke after a random bulge appeared on the display, perhaps from a piece of debris that had gotten into the hinge. The debris, or whatever the bulge was, pressed into the display hard enough to break it.

Bohn says that he did not mistreat the phone, doing "normal phone stuff" like putting it in a pocket and opening and closing the hinge.Similarly, CNBC's Steve Kovach shared a video of his review unit displaying a flickering, failing screen after just a single day of use.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also ran into a catastrophic display failure. His Galaxy Fold is broken and unusable, appearing to feature some of the same screen failures as Kovach's unit.

In Gurman's case, he says that there was a protective layer on the screen that is not supposed to be removed, but this was not communicated to him. He took it off, which may have contributed to the problem. Well-known YouTuber Marques Brownlee says that he did the same thing because there was no warning in the box.

Not all of the reviewers with broken units removed the plastic film, however, so there are clearly multiple issues impacting the Galaxy Fold. Three broken review units that failed within a day or two does not bode well for the device at all. It's not known if reviewers received a bad batch of the device or if units going out to customers will experience the same issues, but anyone considering a purchase should be aware of these failures.

Samsung's Galaxy Fold costs a whopping $1,980, which is a sensationally high price even for a device that works. Right now, Samsung is accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold on carrier sites, and the first retail units are expected to be available to customers on April 26.

I know it has a warning, My question is why would this film cause the screens to fail? Whats the film even for is my question.

Yep we have and I believe in only buying products that are worth it. I don't care who makes it; if its truly a terrible product or has issues like this Fold; I will call them out on it. No way should anyone buy this thing this year....

Samsung makes impressive hardware, see the Note 9 and S10 models. But this looked horrid from the start and looked like a rushed beta unit just to beat Huawei to market. Call me unsurprised.
Samsung may make good hardware, but their software is still on the level of chinese trash.

As long as they skip Samsung's 2019 design, I'm fine with it.

Samsung has multiple designs a year. Hard to imagine I know. My favourite is the infinity-O, much better screen than Apple has ever made.

The same people freaking out about apples butterfly keyboard will somehow find a way to defend Samsung. I was considering one of these phones but looks like i'll be waiting for a couple years.

I have always assumed that the high purchase price was to cover the cost of expected high number of screen repairs. Everything that is repeatedly bent will eventually break.

Nope, they both suck. The only difference is that the folding screen was *expected* by many people to have problems for obvious reasons.

I think most people honestly assumed that something like this would happen. And most of us here were probably salivating at the thought of all the potential problems that could occur with a folding display. Well, Samsung didn’t leave us in suspense for too long...

Some still broke without taking the “protective film” off. Plus, I find it a little hard to believe that a thin piece of plastic is the cause of the issues, or would have actually prevented the device from breaking. Do you?
Well I’d be angry if I spent 2K on a product and the display broke because I took off something I thought was a screen protector. It’s easily done.

Not defending Samsung (if the design is flawed a refund should always be given) but they might be having difficulties trying to create an entirely new class of product. Apple is having difficulties just making a keyboard (tech as old as the headphone jack they laughed about)

We're talking about the Fold here, so that's obviously the design I want Apple to skip, especially considering the debris under Dieter Bohn's unit and the screen protector debacle reported by several reviewers.

As for Sammy's other designs, to each their own.

So you give Samsung a pass for releasing hardware that may not be fully baked but rag on and on and on about Apple?
