These are isolated incidents. And user error most likely. Samsung are master craftsmen. No way they’d ship this product unless it was Samsung perfect. I think Apple is behind this, paying off journalists because Apple is beyond terrified of Samsung’s innovative products.

Also consider that the Verge is an Apple PR mill. They gave the iWatch a positive review. Untrustworthy.

And Apple has had worse episodes. The iPad bending a MONUMENTAL disaster. The butterfly keyboard is also a CATASTROPHE. I should be able to eat cookies and chips over my keyboard and not be afraid a single crumb can break a $2,500 toy computer.

Damn, that sucks. Honestly looks like a really cool device and I would love to have an iphone-version of it, but I knew it was too good to be true. Clearly wasn't built to last, and was pushed out too quickly.

I totally expected the screen issues, but wasn’t thinking about what could happen with the hinge. Think about the folded device in your pocket or bag, with other loose items slipping between the fold (given how open it is) - and made worse by the fact that the screen is plastic and even more prone to scratching and tearing damage.

It is an interesting concept that needs more development on the materials side before it can be functional for widespread use (IMHO).

This is clearly a first generation product and -- frankly -- so much more innovative than what most folks are doing in the mobile space right now. So Samsung deserves credit where it's due. For the Apple apologists swooping in and going, "HAHA SAMSUNG!" all I can think of to say is: What is this, a football game? The emotional attachment to these companies are absurd.

There's no reason to be so dismissive. The Galaxy Fold is a huge step forward for the industry. THAT SAID... if the screens break this easily, it really should have been caught by QC and I'm incredibly surprised that it went out the door as-is. The normal day-to-day wear should not be damaging these devices this quickly. The phones should have been engineered with that in mind. With an asking price of nearly $2,000, these devices shouldn't be breaking.

A folding phone was never a good idea to begin with. It just wasn't.

The idea is good, if there were no tradeoffs. i.e. if the screen was hard enough to be on the outside while resisting scratches, and magical enough to resist years of flexing without warping, bubbling, cracking, or creasing, etc.

But, alas, magiconium is not a readily available material in its transparent variety.

This why Apple stayed far away from gimmicky convertible, touchscreen laptops with swivel hinges, it's just too prone to break. Remember the Aluminum MacBook 2008, with the hinged battery door on the underside? They never did that again! Too much to go wrong.

Also, I am totally the kind of person who will remove those protective films.

I know I slate Cook but that's for a reason - this is just tinfoil madness, probably posted from Seoul.

Because failure elsewhere makes Apple exempt from criticism?

No.
Apple doesn’t receive criticism. They get bashed for the simplest things and when it’s pointed out devices do the same, silence. Like most of the Apple-gates. Google announces an iPhone bug and the media is all over it. Googles Android is riddled with exploits that affects millions and they choose to just not support the effected devices, silence. It’s so obvious the loudest voices are not criticizing Apple they are just waiting to attack, and some people just fall for it.

This was my first concern when that display was introduced...self fulfilling prophecy of a design concept.
