What's the point of jailbreaking if you don't do anything with it? So you're saying, jailbreaking does not slow down your phone... it's what you install that slows it down. So what's the point in jailbreaking at all if that's the case? I'd rather run stock and enjoy my phone than to worry if I installed something that is affecting the performance of my phone.

If you pay attention to my posts, you would understand that not everything slows it down. So if you jailbreak and the ONLY application you install was Cycorder, your phone would not take a hit in performance.

As I said earlier, I have only a select few things installed from Cydia. Probably only 7-8 packages. No winterboard, no status notifier, and nothing else that hogs RAM and hurts performance.

The stereotype that jailbroken phones are buggy, slow is wrong. Are they more likely to be? Yes, because some people install a **** ton of themes and other crap. But just because you are jailbroken does not mean you are.

The only difference between my phone's performance now and pre-jailbreak is the start up time. And seeing as I never turn my phone off, it is well worth it.

This is like a hot bed of controversy. I don't see the big deal. If he doesn't want to jailbreak, then that is on him. I hate jailbreaking and the only reason my phone is jailbroken now is because I found alternate ways of customizing because winterboard, mobile substrate and all that other stuff is garbage in my eyes. Not knocking the developers, but you can't argue that a jailbroken iphone with all that stuff installed isn't slower and buggier than a stock version. The bottom line is apple just needs to allow for more customization, and the situation is solved...but we know that wont happen. Not with the success of the "crap" store.

My two cents :D

I agree with you. If Apple at least let us change our icons (like we can in OS X)... I'd be satisfied. Most of the App Store icons look like GARBAGE. They look rushed, and not well thought out. I especially hate when they have words on them... like Movies.app says "Movies" on the icon! I can read the name below it, why do I need it on the icon too? Also, sometimes developers have a good icon and then they change it to a crappy icon... if course if you're on the road and you wanna download that app, you'll HAVE to get the latest version because there's no way to downgrade unless you're next to your computer. I also hate when the App icon says "Free" or "Lite" across it... that annoys me.

I think JBn' devices run slow because people put 4000 themes and tweaks on there phones. I have WB with my own custom theme, SBSettings, Six Day Weather widget, a few apps like Cycorder, a few tweaks like tap to unlock and macbook white keyboard....and my device runs EXACTLY like it was when it was stock.

So I don't buy the lag nonsense.

I doubt it. Just having WinterBoard installed introduces lag... no themes.

I have 2 iPhones and an iPod touch. I can test these things. I know for a fact that you don't have some sort of super special iPhone. I can test them side by side (1 jailbroken and 1 not jailbroken).

Do it and post result. I am sure you need reasons to do something anyway.

Do you like countering everyones comments? I just think you like seeing your threads on top of the pages...maybe thats it.

I'm telling you that my device has no lag. My gf iphone is stock and mine is JB. Calendar, text, phone, etc...open exactly the same time.

I'm sure one of the upgrades will see this summer is processor speed. Can't wait.

I just did a quick test with my jailbroken iPhone and my roommates unjailbroken iPod Touch. My iPod has the following jailbroken applications installed..

-Cycorder
-Snapture
-SBSettings
-Backgrounder
-Quickgold
-MXTube
-PDAnet
-iRealSMS

When I clicked on clock at the same time on both devices the screens both went to the initial screen "background of the globe" at the exact same time. Than his clocks appeared (2) about half a second before mine (5) appeared.

Then I repeated the same tests with Photos. Both screens went to the initial white at the same time, than his 1 album appeared a fraction of a second before my 5 albums appeared.

As a final test, I did settings because I knew they would have almost identical content in them. This time they opened at the exact same time.

You do know that Touch and iPhone 3G has different hardware spec...

Obviously, you don't have WinterBoard installed.

Also, the iPod touch is 533MHz and the iPhone is 433MHz (I'm pretty sure)

I forgot that there's no practical jailbreak for 2nd gen iPhone. So your iPod touch is probably slower.

Yes, I do and I know that the iPod is faster. And the fact that he is talking about comparing 3 different devices eliminated any worries I had about that anyways.

Obviously, you don't have WinterBoard installed.

So you are admitting that a jailbroken phone can add plenty of function without lagging a phone/making it unstable/randomly crashing all the time, as long as it doesn't have winterboard installed?

It's not just about WinterBoard, but the fact of the matter is that installing WinterBoard, SMBSettings, Reflective Dock, Status Notifier, live weather, intelliscreen, Dock, Backgrounder or any MobileSubstrate plugin or anything that runs in the background means you'll have less available RAM and a less stable system. You'll start seeing freezes and crashes and/or lag. I know how to make it not lag, but then I can't have cool add-ons. Simply installing regular apps like Cycorder won't make your phone lag because they aren't running in the background. By the way, I tried snapture and it totally froze my iPhone to the point where I had to force reboot.

I have heard that about Snapture, but have not had any similar experiences. I definitely agree with what you are saying about all of those programs use RAM and will need cause your phone to be less stable, but I don't see that as a reason not to jailbreak. As long as there is still plenty for me to gain from without those applications I will continue to jailbreak.

Fair enough.

Yawn.

I'll try to dumb down my comment even further.

Jailbreak is like installing a program. If you don't need x, there is no reason to install it. Using x is allocating memory, which is expected and slows down the phone.

No one is proposing that Winterboard is nessary and is the sole benefit of jailbreaking, yet that is pretty much the basis of the entire argument. If Winterboard is the only benefit you see from jailbreaking, then by all means, don't jailbreak.

So what exactly is the argument here?

Yeah, its just not that "super cool/trendy" to me anymore to jailbreak.

It got old after a few days.

I like my phone non-laggy and non-crashing.

If you think that's "weak" then ok. Fine. Awesome. You got me.

I'm just "weak" then.

(But my phone works when I need it to after going back to stock.
Funny how that happened, huh?)

Winterboard isn't the only thing that causes slowdowns. It's not all about WinterBoard (in fact, I didn't even use WinterBoard... I just know from experimenting that WinterBoard is one of the MAIN culprits of having a slow iPhone).

So name another "culprits" that slows down a jailbroken iPhone that you know of when it is turned off.

That's the thing... if the app isn't running (turned off?), it doesn't use RAM, so therefore, no slowdown. However, system plugins and tweaks such as backgrounder, SBSettings and other Mobile Substrate or SpringBoard patches are always running (using up RAM). How hard is this for you to understand?

Here's what you obviously don't understand.

If you don't need SBSettings, why install it? If you install it, why are you surprise that it allocates memory and slows down the phone?
