Our family has 11 apple products (4 Macbook's, 2 iPad's, 4 iPhones, and an Apple Watch). Fortunately, I do come from a wealthier family consisting of doctors and nurses.

Extrapolating from a survey conduced with 800 people across the USA that 64 percent of Americans own an Apple product of some kind is wrong... Maybe it holds true for Gringos, but for Peruvians, Canadians, Chilean, ... it certainly does not.

America is North, Central and South America. It doesn't end with El Paso and Seattle!

Any of those countries have citizens that typically refer to themselves as "Americans"?

these are the same teens who cry foul on twitter every christmas when their parents don't get them an iPhone, or even the right colour iPhone.

you can poll teens all you want. Heck, I was once one too, and many of the things I said I was going to do, or buy, was NOT in line with reality since most teens do not have their own sources of income, and those that do, due to lower wages typically paid to teens have far less disposable income to afford $750-1000 phones.

"my brother got an iPhone and I got a map of Maryland"

Lol

Wishful thinking? As long as Apple continues to lead in the product categories in which they compete, people will continue to buy more Apple products, not less; and in the process, become more entrenched in Apple's ecosystem.

Also, what in the world is a "cult themed technology"? If 75% of a nation is using it, then that's a pretty large "cult".

Survey says owning, nothing about using.

I don't know about this, it sounds like it is skewed, the majority of the teens that I work with all have android phones because of the costs and their continual destruction and dropping of their phones. Nearly all the adults in my sphere use android phones as well. Very view have iPhones, and those that do don't know how to use it.
Almost every teen and adult in my sphere has an iPhone plus a second Apple product.

Personal anecdotes reflect nothing in terms of regional or national use.

This thread seems to have turned into a "My John Thomas is bigger then yours"

What on earth does having a wealthier family have to do with Apple products? Here in the UK, you should see the amount of chavs sporting the latest iProducts.

It's official. Apple won.

Won what exactly?!

Welcome to the club boys and girls. I have owned Apple products since the Mac Classic back in 1991.

Lots of folks on this forum purchased original Apple II's in the late 1970's. I'm not quite such an old-timer as I only have an Apple II Plus. (And unlikely, but maybe there's an Apple I owner in hiding here as well.)

I own 2 cMBPs, 1 iMac (all pre-2012), 2 Apple TV2s, an original iPad, a 2017 iPad Pro 9.7", a Pencil, and 2 iPhone 4s doing music-only duties.

The newest products are the iPad Pro and Pencil, simply because my 13-year-old daughter is a visual arts creative and the Pencil is (according to her) the BEST. That very daughter refuses to use an iPhone, however, integration be damned (I tried to sell her on it, unsuccessfully).

Aside from those 2 devices, neither my kids, wife, nor I want ANY current Apple product, after 16 years of exclusivity.

Sammy Galaxy has replaced iPhones all around, and my sons and I want to be able to game, so PC Desktops are on the near horizon. The feasibility of a Hackintosh makes this even more appealing than ever.

But I'll keep my eye out for the "modular Mac Pro", and dream for a decent 17" MBP.

Thus, at least in my household, if Apple continues in their current hardware and software design direction...

Apple IS doomed.

Apple’s growth will only accelerate, especially with all the negative news about cyber crime. Apple has done an excellent job both in promoting their security and implementing it. Do not see any real downside for Apple in the future.

I absolutely hate these “Surveys” I’m not sure if anyone read the article, but CNBC surveyed 800 people, which sounds like a lot, until you realize the US has over 330+ million people. 800 is a water drop in a ocean. I hate when surveys make a broad conclusion on such little evidence.

Well, if I were in charge of Apple, I'd be a bit worried although everything looks so fine.

If Apple fail to penetrate new markets like China and India, the sales may very well slow down. Not like they're going anywhere soon, but if the spiral turns downwards it might be difficult to turn it around once more.

In India iPhone is definitely on the upswing, but here at the current prices, flagship iPhone models will be a phone only for the very-rich. iPhone x is about 1400 USD. (Apple exchange rate is 90 INR to USD whereas the currency exchange rate is 65 INR to USD) Talk about a poor country! The urban crowd does own a fair share of iPhones because a lot of employers give "perks" for electronics which makes buying electronics a lot more affordable.

On the other hand there are older models which pack an extremely good value. I myself got iPhone 6s 32 GB recently for 450 USD (apple exchange rate at par with currency exchange rate). iPhone SE 32 GB comes at 300 USD (cheaper in India than in US). These phones offer tremendous value at these prices. Apple does have their strategy right if you ask me. Keep something in the 350 to 500 USD range which doesn't have any obvious disadvantage (like too less a memory or too poor internals or too poor camera) and it will sell. There are several who consider an older iPhone more capable than the flagship-killer androids. And considering the sheer size of the Indian market, even a small % buying Apple products gives them tremendous volumes. I am seeing more and more iPhones. More and more reviews in Indian app store. More and more app stores.

Chinese market is a different beast of course. They have the government to contend with. And the ecosystem of social media applications there. Did the disabling of micro-transactions on WeChat have any impact on Apple yet?

(Note - prices in India based on best prices typically available on Amazon)

Must be your area and social circle. I met up with a meetup group of random new people and all 7 of us had iPhones.

Most of my friends and family are on Apple devices, but I find it more interesting, that some of those friends are among my very close peer group in the technology sector, developers, writers, podcasters, all fairly well known in various [tech related] industry. We've made choices to use Apple equipment while also being pretty educated about the alternative :)

oh, they've gotten MUCH faster.

what has happened is we've hit a point of diminishing returns.

Yeah, outside of specific use cases, so much computing is still based around the web browser, or office apps. You could double speeds right_this_second, and a huge majority of people would still be waiting on Facebook to load :D

No one is saying Apple is doomed or losing sales except you. Lots of people are complaining about bugs and glitches and lag. Completely different things.

Uh yes they are. Every single product release comes with the”Apple is doomed. Fire Tim Cook” posts. Every. Single. Time.

My household would skew this sample if we were included. We have 3 Macs, an Apple TV, one Watch, 6 iPhones, and 4 iPads. Way above the 2.6 average.

This is pretty crazy. Apple has done a great job here. It is surprising that no company has caught up with Apple yet. Probably they are waiting for all Americans to own at least 3 Apple products.

Indeed! And to think it all started with Education then swiftly into the consumer market which then, help from the iPhone, bled into the enterprise markets.

Whatever happened to that "8-11%" market Apple holds, depending on who you talk to? ;) hehehe.

Like all cult themed technology, this too shall pass... just give it time. When you are at the top there is no place to go but down... luckily they have enough cash to ride out the wave for a long time without collapsing.

Yeah, there are times a company may go down, but then that means there's opportunity to go up again (although no assurance that it will). There's also a question of "Where's the top?"

I'm not sure what "cult-themed" technology is, and why it's seemingly a problem. Various automakers have sustained cult-like followings for over 100 years. GE goes back to Thomas Edison. IBM has its roots in the 1800s. Rolex and other Swiss watchmakers sell expensive time pieces on a similar basis. What is it about a Tiffany- or Cartier-branded piece of jewelry that makes it more attractive?
