Hey, has anyone here got any idea how long of a wait there typically is for the UK/European release of mac updates after the US release? I had a HP laptop which was stolen on Friday and I'm getting a bit tired of using laptops with batteries that burn out after a year, overheat for nothing and require me to search for software online to do fairly basic stuff...
BUT i need a new laptop and if the UK release date for the new MBPs is late March I doubt I'll stick it out.
Thanks,
Sam

Normally they come out at the same time.

I don't think Apple would compromise the sales of the iPad by releasing new MBPs during the iPad launch in March. My vote is for a later release of the MBPs.

I don't think you become a $50B company by being so serial in your product launch roadmaps. They need revenue from multiple streams. Gambling it all on the iPad is not prudent in the shareholders eyes. I am a shareholder and I hope they don't get tunnel vision.

Dizzler is right,

Apple will wait with the actual availability of Macbook Pro until iPad ships.
If they dont, they will most likely lose money. Now, it is their choice what to do, and over a long period of time, both alternatives can have different effects.

As long as there is a huge iPad buzz, they are not gonna kill it. Look at Avatar. Imagine Cameron would make another, more interesting picture during Avatar release. It would only hurt Avatar and kill the buzz.

Especially if the new MBP is somewhat revolutionary to the current MBP. We dont know what they are changing though.

So yes, mid-end of March is the MBP time, not earlier.

lol...the MBP and the iPad satisfy two completely different market segments....they wouldn't cannibalize one another...an MBP update is nothing more than a processor update which will be seen on their main site with no kind of media event around it...

This is illogical - iPad is what's new and interesting to most people. MBP is just the same old with a better processor (and hopefully a tweak or two). I think a better comparison would be: well what if Cameron had released Avatar and Titanic 3D at the same time - that would kill Avatar's buzz wouldn't it? hell no, only some weird demographic of people who are obsessed with Titanic would be interested.

Not to mention the fact that the majority of ppl in the market for either a MacBook or iPad would not have a clue of the MacBook's update if it is indeed a silent update. If a consumer is in the market for a portable computer, they will get a MacBook, and if they already have a laptop and want an e-reader with internet capability and iPhone apps, or if they dont not have enough money to get a MacBook than they will get a iPad. If the MacBook was to ever take away sales from the iPad it will be because people would rather spend their money on a computer than a big iPod Touch, not because the new MacBooks came out that have a new processor in it that 99% of its consumers would not be able to pronounce let alone spell.

Don't get your hopes up... :)

FW800 isn't useless; it requires less CPU overhead and in terms of sustained throughput, it's far faster than USB2.

You won't see 4 core i* CPUs in a laptop unless Apple goes for the desktop variant, which I highly doubt they will given the power requirements.

The 17" Apple notebooks have always commanded a price premium over their smaller siblings. Making 8GB DDR3 RAM standard will add to that premium. No way they're going to offer a 17" config at under $2000.

And I've said this before on the forums - I hope to god Apple doesn't start pushing 16:9 on their "professional" line of notebooks.

lol Titanic 3D, what are you talking.

iPad does create competition to Macbook. A slight one, of course. This slight difference is enough though to affect tactics of Apple board. This difference is proportional to what kind of update the books will get, a small one or a big one.

You are only right, if the macbook pro is as you said will get a slight improvement. But that's what nobody knows! This opinion of yours was inbuilt into my previous post, you just have to see it! It was said with the line: "Especially if the new MBP is somewhat revolutionary to the current MBP. We dont know what they are changing though."

If the update is huge, it might create a big buzz. a 10 hour battery alone would be enough to see every site possible post their articles about it.

Haha! Nice (but unusual) comparison :D.

Doesn't Apple make more money off the selling of MBP's anyway, then what they will probably be making off the Ipads? Not to mention the different target market. I want my MBP because it can do so much more then the POS Ipad can do, plus I have an Iphone. I really don't care for an Ipad and don't think the update of the pro line will have any effect on people who are already planning on buying the Ipad. Not to mention the price difference, if they update the MBP's and its going to cost ~$2000, thats a very big difference then the 500-800 the ipad will be running for, so I doubt people would all of a sudden have the reaction of "screw the Ipad im going to spend 1200$ more and purchase a MBP"

yeah, MBPs have been updated on Tuesdays for a while, https://buyersguide.macrumors.com//#MacBook_Pro

It is because on Saturday and Sunday everyone is partying
On Friday we think: "Finally weekend"
Because Mondays everything sucks, except you call your boss to tell him you are sick.
Thursdays we think about Fridays.
Wednesdays is a good day for new products, but hey, why not Tuesday if it is 24 hours earlier!

Exactly. Thats like someone saying "man i cant wait for the 2011 Toyota Corolla to come out!" and than seeing that the Lexus IS 10 just came out and saying "screw it, now that Lexus just came out with an update to their car im gana go for that instead!"

The people who are in the market for a $1200-$2500 laptop will get a MacBook while the people in the market for a $500-$800 e-reader with internet will get a iPad. They really are not even closely related and they will not eat at each others sales.

Wrong, from my pov.

Apple does want regular people to buy iPad, because of the App Store and iTunes store and all the games, books, movies in it.. While notebooks generate higher revenues, iPhone and iPad probably have higher profit proportionally, (investment vs profit comparison.) The reason they advertise iPad as best digital reading and movie watching experience.

Right on, I did assume it's not going to be a major update. That is an in-built assumption as is your definition of "somewhat revolutionary" (aren't core I's somewhat revolutionary?). I just don't see MBPs making any kind of significant dent in the iPad market. I think others have pointed out that iPad is a consumption device, MBP is a creative device. iPad is their to grab market that Apple doesn't already have (and I have a nagging feeling that the market is middle-aged and uses XP as its primary operating system purely to read news articles, send emails, etc). Sure iPad is going to "cannibalize" some of Apple's other products' markets, but I don't think it's hungry enough to eat more than a bite of anything Mac- I think it's going to eat up some iPhone and iPod.

^^AGREE!! The iPad is not designed to be a stand alone device. How else are you going to get a pictures, mp3s, and movies in there. You still need a computer to connect to the iPad. Its not even as functional as the netbooks on the market. The iPad is in the market of FanBoy Apple. Only true FanBoys will buy the Magical & Revolutionary device.

or middle-aged people who just read books, email, type the occasional document, and read the news.... just saying. If they can get textbooks on these things in a really nice fashion count in a lot of college students. I'd love to just take this thing to class, type notes on it, have my textbook two clicks away so I can highlight passages- maybe even record the lecture onto it?

MR posters should stop whining about this thing - you know in a year or two ALL of you are going to have one. It's going to evolve.
