Oh great googily moogily

Wow, I really like that phrase! I'll have to start using it.

Anyways, I'm tempted to get my parents an iPad for Christmas/Anniversary. Only thing is, I doubt I could afford it. :(

It would be great for my dad since he has tons of books and getting the iPad version would save LOTS of space. Also, he's been going to the library lately to get books he already has, but the large print version. So being able to change the font size.

For my mom, it would be good for the Epicurious app and other creative kind of things.

I've had the 8c134 iOS 4.2 release for a week now and haven't experienced any WiFi related problems whatsoever. I've used both an Airport Extreme and a D-Link WiFi router and neither has given me any trouble such as dropped connections etc.
Installing 8c134b right now, will see how it goes.

Writing software is hard, so I can understand why some people are basically giving a free pass to Apple on what appear to be repeated delays in this release. But if you're one of those people - remember this the next time MS or Adobe lets one of its purported release dates slip, and you're about to post one of those "LOL what l0z3rs over at M$!" comments.

Sauce for the goose and all that...

I understand your point, but again, the release date has NOT slipped.

Apple said that iOS 4.2 would be publicly released in November, and they made no promises whatsoever regarding their internal development process leading up to a working public release.

:)

What delay, exactly? Apple said November. They still have plenty of time.

Looking back, it appears you're right. Earlier this year (April) Apple was promising a "Fall" release - so just a wide window from September through December. I'd thought that, originally, they'd said September.

As a software engineer, reading all this whining here really makes me glad I don't have to read actual customer "feedback".

Those guys are fixing a problem and making sure it goes through the proper testing before release. All that so you don't have to complain about them bricking your device on release day.

I wonder how many people Apple has to employ that do nothing but filter and pamper whining customers.

We could start by asking how many are on the Genius bar.....

A... 'Mac rumor' is not an established date set by Apple. There's no one slipping the date yet.

If the GM had not been released, no one would be making these guesses. It's just the impatient urge to get this on peoples machines that's driving these wild estimations.

How to install iOS 4.2 GM dmg file?

I've downloaded the GM iOS 4.2 dmg file from Apple's site but how do I install it?

I've downloaded the GM iOS 4.2 dmg file from Apple's site but how do I install it?

1. Open the DMG file like any other (I'm assuming you're using a Mac)

2. Open iTunes and go to the screen for your iPad/iPhone/whatever, hold down ALT/option and click check for updates. This will bring up a file picker. Select the disk image in the sidebar, and select the ipsw file inside.

3. The update will install normally.

Ah, I see what the problem was. I had a corrupted dmg that didn't want to open. I re-downloaded and it worked fine. I'm updating now from within Xcode.

First, off topic: "WhyFi"; Second, my mommy

I've got my Pyrolon flame retardant suit on, so FLAME AWAY!

My incredibly dumb question is, when I get my new Mac Pro, why is it again I'm supposed to want AirPort Extreme 802.11a/b/g and Final-N? (Not to be an ingrate; I appreciate it's steady drop from a $100 BTO option to a $50 one, to a free part of the Mac Pro' base configuration.)

What does it do for me? Does it act as an AirPort Extreme Base Station? Or do I need to buy one of those for my internal card to "work." I put work in parentheses because after I buy and install an AirPort Extreme Base Station, does WiFi in my Mac Pro "work," whatever "work" means?

Second, I'm dying to buy my 82-year-old mommy an iPad for Christmas, but she has one sibling, her brother who lives in Florida, who I REALLY want to "video-somehow-chat" with. She'd be astonished! I think I may have to give her a rain check this Christmas and buy her Summer 2011's "iPad 2" which I expect will have obverse and reverse cameras and support FaceTime and other stuff with her brother way down in Florida.

Does anyone make/sell a Webcam/iChat/FaceTime iPad solution yet, and if so, does the Gatekeeper at Apple's app store allow such an app, or has it been clubbed and dragged away by riot police?

Meek

Here's hoping the rediculous time it takes to backup the iPad is fixed!

Just timed how long it takes to complete the backup/Transfer/Sync process on my 32Gb iPad with about 25Gb of data:

2 minutes 40 seconds.

Out of curiosity, for those reporting long backup times, how much free space do you have. Wonder if it has something to do with that?

I don't know why. I have the 32 GB half full and last night it took 4 hours to backup. I couldn't use my beloved iPad for 4 hours and I was getting frenetic!

This is not an iPad problem it's a iOS 3.2 problem. iPhone backup used to be the same and take forever before iOS 4. I haven't backed it up since installing iOS 4.2. Can somebody else confirm this?

Writing software ISN'T hard. Writing good software is.

I have 3.2.2 on my ipad, and I have never seen a backup take longer than a minute or so.

I installed 4.2 to my iPhone and iPad. After seeing this story and a possible Nov 24th date, I couldn't wait anymore. I really love Airplay. Can't wait for the Apple TV update that will allow for video.

After this update is released i'm guessing thats it for iOS 4 (save for emergency security updates) and the next update will be iOS 5?

I don't think anyone has mentioned if this new build fixes the NYT Crosswords app, or do I need to wait for the Magmic's new version to get pushed out through the app store before I can enjoy the new 4.2GM bliss all of you have found?

Anybody else with 4.2 GM have issues with Twitter?

My app signs out every time I turn the iPad off or quit the app from the multitask bar.

Is anybody else experiencing this? Any advice?

Mine is working fine, but I think I installed Twitter after installing 4.2. Maybe try reinstalling?
