And hopefully it's to revert the physical switch back to a screen lock. Because it's seriously EXCEPTIONALLY STUPID to make that switch; it makes NO sense to have an instant mute-switch on the iPad, and it's not nearly as convenient to double-tap, slide and push the button. I used the switch all the time to instantly prevent unwanted rotation with one hand; now it's not nearly as easy to do it with one hand.

You are wrong. It is EXCEPTIONALLY STUPID that without the physical switch being changed, the only way to mute the iPad was to first let it make a noise.

Haha! Beautiful!
Gosh, this thread is getting funner by the hour.

We've got a supposed developer/microprocessor designer who wants it, wants it now... And that the GM IS alway the public release, even though there plenty of historic precedents suggesting otherwise. I'd hate to be using something this guy has developed!

We've got the 'changing that switch thing on the side has destroyed my life' crew, who are still sulking over their dignity injury of having to re-learn how to use a function that's used maybe... Once a day. Oh the pain!

We've got the usual rabble of 'this delay is seriously damaging my iPad use', as though their ipad has been magically rendered useless by the mere presence of an update somewhere in the world.

We've got the 'mac rumors rumor is always an official statement' crew, who also are suffering a dignity injury, because suddenly because of some rubbish statements, an on-time product is 'late'. As though sulking is going to make apple engineers work harder, faster, and better in order to get them their prize in the next 24 hours. Bloody gen y and their 'entitlement'.

Keep it comin' guys. It's hilarious.

I on the other hand use my iPad for critical work functions. It might be hard for those who always need to have the 'latest and greatest' to understand, but I need this to work, and retain my work without problems or issues. Even when it is publicly released, I intend to hold off while you 'early adaptors' find all the bugs, and sulk at the instabilities. To those of you who throw your hat into the ring and fail your computer on my behalf... I thank you.

After all, it is you who probably found the wifi bug for apple to fix!

But seriously.... If you're using something that's not a public release, you've got no recourse for complaint. Be that release a 'golden master' or otherwise. You took the risks, you 'knew' what you were doing, and there's no written guarantee from apple about the stability or the functionality of their GM release.

So suck it up.

The WiFi on my 2nd Gen Touch disconnects constantly since I upgraded to iOS 4 (on release day). It improved a bit with 4.1 but still disconnects constantly, and the console is full of WiFi errors all the time. I tried everything in the universe repeatedly. Reverting to iOS 3 is the only thing that returns it to proper functioning. I wish they would fix whatever they borked. It ruins downloads, games, anything that needs the network. I have read many others with the same issues on the Apples Discussion forum. They are going the extra mile to ensure functionality on iPads, I hope they did something to fix it on the older devices affected by the previous iOS 4 versions.

Pardon my shonky grammar and wording on my earlier statement. I was sucking down a cup of tea and cooking my breakfast, while tapping that out on my iPad.

Which was interrupted by three phone calls (on a Saturday morning FFS).

But my points still stand.

Suck it up.

HAHAHAHA. Your impatience is absurd. I bet when it's cold outside you also claim that global warming is a myth.

All good things in all good time.

Global warming is a myth - well, not really, but it is a misnomer invented by the media who thought "global climate change" was too complex and vague a term without enough punch. Global climate change, on the other hand, is no myth.

I hate you

25% improvement in wifi speed for me, between gm and gm2 averaged 26Mbs on gm1

john.

I hate you and your fast Internet speeds. I can't get that speed without changing to cable and paying a fortune. :p
Why can't Dsl get with the program??? Back on topic, gm 2 seems to have fixed my wifi connection issue.

Regards
Joel

What are we sucking up? Bundy? :D

You're forgiven for everything but the Ipad.

We shouldn't have to suffer because you've chosen to use a substandard tool that isn't up to the task. ;)

Drag the Ipad into the hazardous waste disposal bin, and buy an MBA that you can actually type on. :)

Of course, I'll be away for Thanksgiving with just my iPad (not flying with both my iPad and MacBook Pro!) and won't be able to update until that Sunday.

Bummer! But I'll live.

Unless my flight crashes. :(

Can you post your travel schedule so I don't get on the same plane as you

well my network speed isnt really affected. the result from the bottom was before the iOS 4.2 GM update version 1 and the top was after the GM 4.2 update

Actually, now I'm off my kitchen table, I'm on my Macbook pro, so you can stop hanging about the hazardous waste disposal bin in the anticipation of my dropping my iPad into it.

And besides, it's nasty in there. I threw some Cytotoxic material in there yesterday afternoon. AKA Norton Antivirus.

I've been following posts from people who took the golden master when it was originally released and immediately noticed the WiFi issues within minutes of installing it.

I continue to be surprised at how poor Apple's quality control is. I don't expect software to be perfect, but I would love to know how some of these obvious and critical issues make it into a golden master.

It's a beta. you obviously aren't a developer since you don't understand this. Just because its a GM seed doesn't mean its flawless, it means its the final test before the release is pushed. If a bug pops up, like it did here, then it gets fixed and a new GM seed is released. Cry poor quality control all you want but you are wrong. Catching an issue and fixing it before release instead of releasing and patching later is great quality control.

Nice, but you have it backwards. I was the developer/microprocessor designer, and I said a GM is BETA release, and NOT a public release, and therefore Apple's quality control worked exactly as it is supposed to. You confused who was arguing what.

Apple had been rumored

Key word is rumored. Apple never gave out today's date or any date and no one produced an internal memo etc with any date.

As for the 24th, I doubt it. All but a handful of stores will be closed on Thanksgiving and Black Friday is an all hands selling day so the bars are closed. So when it bonks your stuff you will be hard up for help. So i'm thinking if it's not some time next week it will be the week after Thanksgiving. Although the release of the new itunes today makes sooner rather than later seem more likely. I mean if there was a major issue why not delay the itunes update also.

WTF, are there six people writing 4.2 for iPad?

50+ Billion dollars in the bank!

HIRE SOME PEOPLE.

Bad move. The more complex a problem the fewer people you want working on it. Communication is key with such things and getting large groups in sync is a pain in the ass.

They likely have something like 6-8 people directly working on the software with 2-3 times that in the group testing it on campus (plus all the 'field' testers)

I don't think you're familiar with software development cycles and where the term "Golden Master" comes from.

The term comes from the days of physical disks when you had to 'finalize' software so the actual disks could be created. With a downloaded software, finalization doesn't exist until someone decides to throw the switch and start allowing downloads. Changes can and often do occur within hours of that moment. Totally legit

As for this wifi issue, no not EVERYBODY saw it. heck a number of folks right here in this thread said they haven't had any issues. it seems to be an issue only with particular routers and wifi set ups. Something that can't be thoroughly testing on campus because it is impossible for them to think up every possible set up. That's why they release it to the developers it allows them to have someone test things they hadn't thought up or have the means to set up. But even then, not everyone will be tested. Few developers, for example, will be using a Linksys b router that hasn't had a firmware update in 3 years like my mother had until last week.
