Ivybridge is the backhand slap in the face intel is holding onto until amd threatens to come out with something decent.

For now intel just sent a letter to AMD Asking ' what did the 5 fingers say to the face?' signed Rick James/ivy bridge

Idunno man, Bulldozer has some pretty impressive specs up its sleeves.

Why are you all talking about ivy bridge, let the sandy bridge models come out then starts speculating

Intelligent speculation involves analyzing what's coming out now and what's coming out in the future. Apple uses Intel chips, therefore the future of Intel chips tends to be telling information.

Explain yourself.

Indeed, as all the articles I've seen basically just say:

- Sandy Bridge MBPs probably soon, due to stock shortages of current models
- 13" MB and probably MBP to use Intel's SB IGP
- 15" and 17" MBP to use AMD discrete graphics

None of these are at all surprising.

Other than that, the only other suggestions were thinner and lighter (wouldn't be too surprising knowing Apple), loss of internal Superdrive (again, it's Apple) more battery (same thing), but they weren't claimed insider info. Exactly what can't you believe?

I'm sure the MBPs will get at least some blade SSD storage, so performance will improve dramatically, and it also gets the 30 day sleep and instant on from hibernate features. That's what Apple means by the MBA being the "future of MacBooks".

It is readily available on Apple's website and also Amazon. Best Buy also has a lot of MBP's in stock. I would take this information as just rumors.

Hasn't Apple gotten chips ahead of the official launch date before?
This.
Don't you guys realize it is more of a feather in Intel's cap to give Apple some exclusivity than Acer? Which brand do you think gets more media attention when there is a product line refresh?
After Apple refreshes a product line guaranateed one of my relatives and 4 of my friends will call me asking if they need to buy it. Apple has a great hype machine which results in people normally of better editorial sense quoting publicist copy verbatim in their magazines.
Not that I dont like apple stuff, I geek out as well. But please, some objectivity guys. These are just really shiny tools.

It's refresh blueballs. Soon the tension will be relieved, but until then, it's everyone being all ants-in-the-pants about it.

That was a fantastic summary of literally a dozen threads though.

This.

I don't think it matters that much to Intel. Nor do I think Apple actually gets them THAT far ahead. Maybe they're allowed to know about and plan products with them sooner, but we're already seeing Sandy Bridge notebooks elsewhere. Apple just hasn't announced theirs yet. And it's not like they are only starting on engineering these machines now.

Well, there has been ZERO insider info regarding these machines. There's always some kind of leak, even if it is really minor, before a refresh.

Everything is 100% speculation.

I can't remember of a refresh where we didn't have some kind of insider info.

We'll get it RIGHT before it happens. My guess is that we still have the better half of a month left to go at the very least.

Paul Otellini (CEO of Intel) was quoted as saying that they could come as early as the second half of 2011.

Production: H2 2011
Release: CES 2012

I don't see why Intel would break their tick-tock schedule. Besides, LGA 2011 Sandy Bridges won't be out until Q4 2011 so it would be ridiculous if IB was released before.

Sure, it could go either way. But, it's in line with a typical MacBook Pro refresh cycle. If the 13" takes a back-seat and isn't discontinued, it'll join back up with the others next refresh, unless Intel makes another inferior IGP AGAIN.

It will be inferior. 16 EUs doesn't sound too promising, 33% more than what the current has. The issue is that even though the Intel IGP gets better all the time, AMD and NVidia also make new, more powerful GPUs. It won't suddenly become as good as mid-level discrete GPUs, it will stay at low-end level.

::Shrugs:: Maybe they're shortening their release cycle a bit? Yo no se. Either way, I could see Apple holding out on moving the remaining Core 2 machines until then.

Well, if Apple did hold out and kept using C2D and the 320M, then next year Apple would switch to Ivy Bridge and then it'd be a definite upgrade in IGP and CPU; it'd also result in a generation of "2-3x the performance of the previous model" marketing for those product lines.

Apple is currently offering the best nvdia's GPU they can offer for the power consumption. There isn't any other Nvidia card that offers more performance for the same or less TDP. That's why I doubt that Apple is even going for 425m since it has 96 cores (330m has 48). Maybe GT 520m. Nvidia's policy is to put more cores to get more power, but that means more consumption if they don't shrink proccess nanometers, and they are not doing it.

In the other hand ATI seems to have a lot more of power in OpengGL even in the cards that performs less in Directx than Nvidia ones and their GPUs are more power efficient. That is so convenient for apple. Less power consumption and more performance in openg GL even putting lower end cards..

If you want to be really surprised activate cinebench r10 opengl in the following list and sort the list by that column. You can see how ati outperforms nvidia in opengl!!
One ATI midline 6550 is faster than two top of the line nvidia gtx 480m in sli!!!!!!!

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html?&3dmark01=0&3dmark03=0&3dmark05=0&3dmark06=1&archive=0&benchmark_values=0&cinebench10_ogl=1&condensed=0&crysis=&doom3=&dx=0&fear=&month=&multiplegpus=0&or=0&professional=0&search=&sort=cinebench10_ogl&vantage3dmark=&vantage3dmarkgpu=

I like nvidia a lot more, but, since OSX works with OpenGL and not with directx, Apple should take an ati gpu if they want to offer something faster in their new laptops.

The only possibility I have ever heard on breaking yearly tick-tock is in the case that there is difficulty moving down to the next fab scale. I have read that there could end up being a third "bridge" processor between Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge, should the 22nm die-shrink be delayed for some reason. But that is old info, and the last I heard the 22nm fabs are coming along nicely. If you follow this logic then the next potential disruption would be between Haswell and Rockwell.

Hello everyone,
I apologize for my bad English (thanks to translator :D).
Note that the Swiss site, shows all the MBP available in 24 hours.

I don't think that will be released Tuesday ...! :(

We'll just have to wait and see. :)

Apple is taking a lot of effort to have their apple stores well sotcked. Maybe this points that it is not going to be an inminent refresh but due to shortages in other retailers, I think they are preparing for it solding out, even some months before. I think that the worse brand to sell once there is a new model is Apple.

whats the difference between sandy bridge and ivy bridge. Yes they are two different processors made by Intel but whats the difference in specs. I heard ivy bridge is double something of sandy bridge. Does that mean don't buy a new mac and wait for ivy bridge?

Don't buy Ivy bridge!! There is going to be something better after it!!! And don't buy the next technology after Ivy, there is going to be something really amazing in 2125!! But in 2126 it is going to be something even more expectacular!!!
