Nice to see all the love here for the 2209WA.

I've just ordered one, plus a new Dell 2007 from a company that had some in stock.

Current monitor collection in the office:

2007WFP
2007WFP (both S-IPS)
2209WA
2407WFP (can't remember if this is 2408WFP-HC or not. It's either PVA or S-PVA)

All macbooks here, and all Dells. Not bad.

Oh no you didn't... THAT, my friend, is a Unicomp Customizer 104, direct descendant of the IBM Model M keyboard, unarguably the finest keyboard ever made. It's loud, has buckling spring keys, and weighs more than your average laptop. You WILL respect the Unicomp. :D

Yes, and they also double quite nicely as a club, baseball bat, hammer, and a meat tenderizer! :D

how to get two monitors working as extended monitor? at the moment I have 23" ACD but am thinking of two 2209's as I am very impressed with the one I bought for my wife.

Your hardware must be able to support multiple displays. Each 2209 is plugged into a port on the back of the video card in my Mac Pro. OS X automatically detects both displays and then I have the option of how each display is configured - either mirrored or the second display can be the extended display. This same principle applies when using two or more displays.

thanks for the info. on another thread someone mentioned that the Matrox DualHead2Go digital can be used with a single graphic card MBP to drive two monitors but it has been an issue with the display port. Perhaps the tech has not caught up yet but hopefully something will come out enabling this function. How do you like the two 2209's side by side? They are exceptional value for money

Duff-Man says....I sold my old G5 and one of the old monitors I was using last week and am shortly ordering a new Mac Pro - it's looking like the 2209wa will be my choice for a couple new screens as well....oh yeah!

Not sure about the Matrox. I have used Matrox video cards in the past with great success, but only with a single display.

Side by side, the 2209's are great. They do take up a fair amount of desk space (~40" wide), but other than that I have no complaints. Aside from the outstanding picture quality, I liked the fact that they have multiple connections and a very flexible stand that allows the display to pivot and rotate.

Before purchasing the 2209's, I had been looking at the Dell 3008WFP - but hindsight being 20/20, I'm glad I went with the 2209's because they are a better fit for my needs.

panel types

Thanks for posting detailed info about the new Dell monitor. I was loosely looking for a new monitor to replace my aging 17'' Ultrasharp. Since I work mostly of my laptop moving around I do not use my monitor that often. However, I am hoping to get back to some photo(shop) work (if time permits) so desktop is in order ... I have a bad feeling that my 10-year old desktop won't cut it.

I did my read number of pages on panel types bla bla bla. I still find it difficult to figure panel type for new monitors. I was looking for an IPS panel but nearly no specs page lists panel types. Could anybody recommend good source of panel types for different monitors? (I used to look at the response time since the IPS panels used to be lot slower 16ms ... but that does not seem to be the case anymore with new eIPS panels ... bummer :) ).

I will probably stick with Ultrasharp monitors since it worked for me in the past and they seem to provide good value for money.

Cheers,

PS. I did not see the new 2209WA on Dell Canada ...

My 2209WA arrived yesterday, and I'm quite impressed. Overall, I still like my 2005FPW better, but the 2209WA is sitting there with it at the top of my recommendations. The backlight is as close to perfect as I can imagine.

What did you eventually use for Brightness, Contrast, and Sharpness?

I settled on
Brightness 3
Contrast 73
Sharpness 40

Edit:
After Calibrating with Spyder2 PRO used these RGB settings
R 100
G 97
B 99

At least the White at these settings doesn't burn your retina.

Be careful, some of the Ultrasharps are TN panels. While it may not affect everyone's choice it could be a killer for others

Make sure you are in the Small Business section of their website. That is the only place it shows up on the US site, so I would guess Dell Canada is the same. I even had a Dell sales rep who couldn't find the thing until I asked him to make sure he was in the small business section. I have no idea why they don't have this monitor more widely available.

I'd have to disagree... the best behemoth keyboard ever made is the Kinesis contoured model:

Though to be fair, if my wrists were in tip-top shape, I'd probably be using the Unicomp

Here's my setup:
Dell 2209WA, 15" Uni-MBP with Speck Black Satin See-Through case, Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet, Epson CX8400 AIO, 1TB, 500GB WD External Mybook HD's.

Just out of curiosity, how does the wacom work with the big monitor? Ever feel cramped for space on the tablet?

Thanks, Steve. It is there ... I find that really weird... it even lists panel type as IPS.

No, not cramped at all. The size is like 4"x6" or something and its almost the same ratio as the monitor, so it moves across well. Accurately too. It makes Photoshop a dream.

Of course, if you ever feel cramped, you can always buy their 11"x16" tablet:eek:

I had high hopes for this monitor, but mine is poorly assembled. The thing buzzes like a fridge when it's on, the panel has bad uniformity in the form of three very distinct blotchy dark areas on the screen, and there is a noticeable gap between the display and bezel. You can lightly tap the display and it moves back into the housing. Not so good. I'm going to RMA this thing on Monday. Too bad. Many people have good results with this monitor though. Be sure to check your uniformity. I, luckily, didn't see any dead pixel. Anyone notice a slight buzzing noise? I can't handle these types of noises when there aren't any ambient sounds to drown them out. My previous crappy Dell vga monitor made no noise.

Wtf

So just because I recommend superior products from Apple rather than cheap unreliable hardware from Dell or MS with crappy customer service, I'm all of a sudden a troll?

You don't deserve to be in the Apple community.

You're kidding, right? I'm a huge Apple fan, but even I admit the screens on their monitors are NOT much if any different than other brands.

What is wrong with you?

Good to hear, thanks! As for the big tablet, the only way I'd be able to afford one is if I make the next big iPhone app :p

Well, I finally got my 2209WA in and setup on the Mini. All I have to say is...WOW! This thing rocks! It is quite a shock going from a 5 year old standard def 19in to this thing. I guess I never realized just how dim the old monitor had gotten. In fact, I think this monitor looks better than the 23" ACD sitting on my desk at work. (It's one of the old school plastic models, though).

rtheb: I thought you had typoed in your settings for your monitor, but this thing is bright! I can see why your settings for brightness were so low.

Verdict: Huge success! :D

Congrats...what did you end up paying for it? Did you find any coupons, how long did a take to ship?

Thanks!

Also I have not ever found a warranty as good as the one they give with the ultrasharps. They will exchange it no questions next day if you have an issue, 3 years standard and 5 years is an option. If only dell had this kind of support on all their stuff. :(

Well, I had a bit of trouble with my initial order (detailed in an earlier post), so my situation is a bit unique. The initial price was around 225 with tax and everything. After the problems with my billing address, I canceled and placed another order. The problem was that by the time I placed the second order, the $50 instant savings deal was gone. I also initially found a 10% off coupon, which had also expired.

To Dell's credit, though, the Dell sales rep I was working with agreed to give me a $50 credit, since they were no longer running the special deal. I also found a 5% off coupon, so in the end, I spent a bit more. Total after the $50 credit and 5% coupon was around $230 with taxes and such. Check techbargains.com for Dell coupons. I placed the order on 3 April, and received the monitor yesterday. After a bumpy start, Dell really redeemed themselves in my eyes.

As blackhand said, one of the main reasons I wanted this monitor was the Dell Ultrasharp warranty. If you have 1 dead/bright/stuck pixel, they will advance ship you a replacement. I stuck with the standard 3 year warranty, but for $50, you can extend it to 5 years.

they are now going for $179 refurbished from dell. Dell has an excellent policy on refurbished panels and would not hesitate to buy it refurbished from dell.
