Unfortunately not. :( AFAIK, only Apple displays support this.

Has anyone tried this with ddc/ci enabled (language used for computers to talk to the monitor and change settings). That may be how apple implemented it on their screens so it may work with the dell too.

I finally bought myself a 2209WA. It was a while after the best deal ($206 after instant saving and a coupon). I talked to one of the sales reps via live chat and asked about price matching, and he offered $212 incl. shipping. I made a purchase right away. The confirmation e-mail said expected shipping date would be 5/12/09, but on the next day, it was shipped out!

I just set it up with my PB G4 12 " 1.5ghz and had no problems. The picture quality is great to me. This is only my first day with the monitor, but so far I am really satisfied.

It supports rotating the screen?

I got one of these a few weeks ago. I am pretty happy with it minus a few things.

Pros-
no stuck/dead pixels
great stand
good build quality

Cons-
it doesn't buzz but it creaks like an old house sometimes.
text- not real happy with how text looks. I have tried playing with the sharpness settings with mild success.
eye strain- can't use it for long periods or I get eye strain and/or headache. I don't think my eyes are going all of a sudden.

Did anyone see the latest Customer Satisfaction thing where Dell came like 93rd or something? That's ridiculous.

You wouldn't buy a PC from Dell, why buy their monitors?

Dell 2209WA has E-IPS panel with a three year warranty for less than $250.00 and as a part of Dell's Ultrasharp line, you get a zero-bright-pixel guarantee.

If you have even one Dead or Stuck Pixel you just call the number listed on your invoice and you should have an RMA being shipped to you within 10 minutes.

I also purchased eight (8) each 2007 WFP which came with identical S-IPS panels as my Apple 20" Cinema Display, but has numerous USB ports, as well as VGA and DVI connections for about 1/2 the cost of the ACD. Haven't had a hiccup on any of them in over 2+ years.

I just replaced one of my 2007WFPs with this new 2209WA and I'm not going back.

I love my macbook as much as the next person. I honestly feel it's a huge improvement over my old Dell laptop. At the same time though, applecare is absolute crap compared to Dell's complete care warranty. If I spill orange juice on my laptop or drop it off a building, not only will they fix it (or give me a new one), they send a tech to my location to do it. Dell's laptops might not be the best (they are PCs, after all), but their customer support much, much better than Apple's (and I say this after having numerous repairs done by Dell).

What planet are you on?

Nothing but crap service personally (got rid of their equipment), friends have had crap service, and crap service and equipment at work, which is a global customer of Dell.

They are also last on the list of customer service from a recent poll...

Dell, by the way, brought up the rear with the lowest overall score and one of three firms rated "poor."

I guess the 4850 equipped iMacs are really Dells in disguise then?

Oh, wait, they are Apples. Seems someone forgets most of the builders of Apple computers also make.... wait for it... Dell, HP, and others.

I am on his planet obviously.

My dad fried the new Dell I gave my mom (when he was installing some really crap written software and it locked up he pulled the plug - over and over). They sent someone out after they used the online software to determine the issue. New motherboard... with in a DAY.

When my iMac blew out, I had to do a song and dance for the tech to convince him that no screen was displaying. I then had to take it in for service and wait OVER TWO WEEKS for it to be repaired.

Now, tell me who has better service? I have yet to have a satisfactory encounter with Apple care. My dad who has a knack for breaking computers hasn't waited more than a day for service if it didn't get fixed by someone remotely.

Hence when I chose to gift new computers I always give Dells. I won't saddle anyone with an iMac ... maybe a MacBook but never an iMac. Carting a computer in for service is a joke.

A legitimate question that has been asked and answered...

To all the other Fan Boys...

Don't hijack this thread and have it descend into another Apple Fan Boy v. PC cat fight.

If you aren't interested in the Dell 2209WA don't read the thread and please don't post uninformed drivel. :p

Wouldn't be the first time on this thread either

In any event, just chiming in to say that the online store has run out of refurbs (they had ~25 the other day, all of which disappeared in a matter of hours!).

Back on subject

Today my 2209WA arrived, and after 30 seconds to connect it up, i'm impressed, as yet it's at factory settings which are pretty damn fine :),
thing is happy living with my mac pro, ordered it on monday night, arrived today, they tried to deliver yesterday but i was working, overall a pretty good service, got it from PCBUYIT here in the UK, really good customer service too,
I'd recommend them to anyone, never let me down yet :D

lovely monitor but one small problem... usb ports stopped working...

i got my 2209WA last week (also pcbuyit...very good service and quick delivery) and i love it! i'm a big apple fan and was kind of anxious about moving vaguely into 'PC world' (NB. at least thats how it felt to me...so no offense to PC users.. and i'm NOT trying to start another PC v Apple debate... right where was i...?) so i'm very pleased with the clarity and colours, etc... i'm an illustrator and use photoshop etc., so this is important to me you see.

BUT... although the usb ports worked fine on the monitor for the first 6 days of its life with me... now they've suddenly stopped working and i'm somewhat mystified. have tried all sorts of things (unplugging monitor - reconnecting, restarting mac, drinking coffee, unplugging usb connections..reconnecting, drinking wine.) but to no avail so far (though the wine helped me not be so annoyed about them not working) so wondered if anyone else has had this problem or any suggestions about this??

i have tried to google it and it seems to be a big problem for dell monitors on their support site (not encouraging) - some solutions but all so far for pc/windows so not everso helpful to a little mac user like me (i'm not actually little... but in the big forum world i suddenly feel little)

any help would be much appreciated - thank you very much!

p.s i hope i'm not posting in the wrong thread... apologies if so and i will move on to the right thread if need be......

Yup also got my monitors from PCbuyit.co.uk. All went smoothly, fast delivery.

No idea about the USB problem - and yes you're welcome to post about it in this thread - it's a useful heads up.

And agree, no more pc vs apple debate. I work in two companies - one is mac-only, and I admin 10 macs theres, and the other is pc-only, and I admin 36 PCs there. Each have their uses. My personal computer is a macbook, which I use to troubleshoot the Windows network :)

It's all about the best tool for the job that meets the budget you have.

Dell might not make good home computers, but *some* of their monitors are pretty damn good, and at a good price too. I've also heard good things about their corporate computers and corporate service.

I would call Dell support and have them give you an RMA to exchange the display.

They will send you a new display and you just box up the defective monitor in that box and return.

They should have the shipping pre-paid as well.

You don't want to wait if the USB ports aren't working.

BTW you might want to try the Dispaly on a PC if available and see if the USB ports work there.

I had to install the enclosed Window's driver CD on a ThinkPad to get proper resolution et. al on the PC.

With my MacBook the display just worked!

(I sound like an Apple advert/fanboy :D)

so i'm very pleased with the clarity and colours, etc... i'm an illustrator and use photoshop etc., so this is important to me you see.

This what i use the 2209wa for PS ect ect, it's a bummer about the USB ports but i don't use them so it's no problem for me, but as has been quoted, contact Dell, get it replaced, but for me, my love affair with samsung monitors is over, I'm more than happy with the Dell, last part of my mac pro jigsaw after upping my RAM to 8gb a few weeks back.

hope you get the USB issue sorted soon ;)

okay.. so now they're working again..?!

firstly thank you for your posts and suggestions very nice macrumor people... much appreciated (i don't feel so little anymore)

and now heres an update... i left the monitor off for most of the day unplugged from both ends ... just reconnected it and 'ta daaa!' ... they're working again.... even as i type, though for how long is anybody's guess of course! (another 6 days maybe??!) so i think i will give it a few more days and see how things go and if the usb ports behave maybe the monitor will get a reprieve... maybe it was just a blip... maybe? well i hope so but if not i will contact dell as suggested.

apart from this niggle the monitor is lovely and having spent weeks doing research (okay.. a few days then stretched over weeks) and then 'umming and arrring' about which one to buy, i would definitely recommend it to anyone in the graphics/art/photo type world who hasn't got huge money but needs an excellent screen.

i'll keep you updated about the usb problem/not problem as it unfolds!
thank you again.

... but for me, my love affair with samsung monitors is over

Yeah my current external is a 17" Samsung from early 2005... it's getting a bit old but the slim design is still the best I've seen for a LCD, period. I really wish they kept the design in future models, but in any event I don't see anything like the 2209WA offered by Samsung at this price point.

Sigh... I really should stop hanging around this thread... I'm supposed to be saving money for grad school, not drooling over new monitors :D

Just as an FYI:

We have a Xerox LCD screen at church that won't work sometimes, but these high tech LCD screens have little computers in them that may lock up. Turning it "off" then "on" doesn't really reset the computer.

If you unplug it entirely (even take off the power adapter completely from the unit if it has one), wait a minute, and plug everything back in, it resets the LCD screen's computer and all is happy again... :D

Hope this helps anyone wondering.

Being a part of the Apple community should be a source of ultimate pride! If you are embarrassed, then you don't belong here and you are free to leave.

Are you for real? I think the guy is not embarrassed to be part of the Apple community, he is embarrassed to be associated with you. (PS. 4 Macs and one PC under my desk, one Mac, two Apple displays and two Dell displays on my desk. Just in case you get the wrong idea. )

I use Macs because they work very well in every respect, not because they are made by Apple. I use Dell monitors because they are good value for money and Apple doesn't build 27 inch monitors.

ah ha! thats what i did yesterday - ie. unplugging it entirely as you describe - so maybe thats what got the usb's working again - thank you for explaining that because now i'll know what to try straight away if it happens again.... so yes you have helped someone wondering!

Apparently a number of people at [H]ardForum Doubled up and bought two each of the 2209WAs from the refurb store for under $400.00.

2 each 22" 2209WA @ Total Cost of $384.00

Makes 1 each 24" Apple LED Backlit Cinema Display @ $899.00 seem a bit expensive.
