The Apple apologists are out in full force. After watching the videos anyone with any objectivity can plainly see that the new iPad has glaring design flaws. The screen glass is way too thin (thinner than the 2017 version), the metal unibody is much too thin, and the holes in the body create structural weak points that allow it to bend in these areas. It’s bendgate all over again. I’m ridiculously careful with my devices but after only one week my iPhone 6 Plus was noticeably bent. I exchanged it for a new one and immediately sold it and went back to my iPhone 5s at the time. I now use an iPhone 8 which is much more durable with the glass front and back. Very simply, the new iPad is a really big design mistake. I’ll definitely be sticking with the my 2017 10.5 for now.

I don’t understand some of you people these days.

The iPad is designed to be used in a certain way. If you intententionally apply pressure to it, of course it will bend and be damaged. Respect the device and use it with respect and it will last.

That’s like asking why crashing a car would damage it and claiming the damage is due to poor workmanship and design

Seeing the iPad being bent like that for views is so disrespectful. When there are parts of the world in starvation while some complain that an iPad bends, that’s why we can’t have nice things.

There’s apologists and then there’s folks with some common sense.

I don’t think anyone is saying these things (new iPads, old iPhones, whatever) aren’t destruction proof.

Common sense says: you bend a thin piece of metal and glass, it’s probably going to break, so don’t do that.

The “review” videos don’t show iPads under normal, every day wear and tear. They aren’t indicative of what MOST people will experience.

I don’t squeeze my glass of water because I know that if I try hard enough, it’s gonna shatter. I know that my iPad is thin, so maybe I should treat it like the investment it is and not like a TV remote and just sit on it.

I’m not going to put thousands of dollars with of equipment in a backpack with razor blades and rocks, because that would be stupid, because that would lack common sense.

You don’t drive a car around without insurance, you don’t use a $2000 iPad without some type of case to carry it around in.

Common. Sense.

I think this discussion is getting nowhere. Best we could do is to wait if the bending problem will start to get common among iPad Pro users. I understand the Apple apologist that they feel some kind of pressure from all the hate that is growing around Apple, but they have to see that Apple is doing quite a lot of bad moves recently. Because back in the day most of the Apple haters were just a bunch of guys that never had an Apple product. Nowdays a lot of Apple fanboys turned into some kind of haters, but it didn't happen for no reason. Those fanboys bought the products and are not satisfied with them, so they are talking about it.

It has to be very hard for a company to make more money than previous year again again. All of the stock holders are expecting growing profits. Apple needs a real "product guy and strong personality" as CEO, who doesn't really care much if the company is making more and more money for their shareholders. They are making enough money.

No one should ever enjoy anything, because somewhere someone is starving.

Then go for sturdy casings because they’re better
Look everyone. If you TRY to bend an iPad. It’s going to bend. Just like any other tablet that size and thickness. If you take care of it and maybe put it in a folio case, it won’t bend. Problem solved.

You’re correct in saying someone somewhere is starving.

More the reason why any one who isn’t and has the financial luxury to own electronic products like these or any brand, should use them in a respectful manner.

Or how about this, if it bends. THEN DONT F****** BUY IT.

PERIOD.

The video shows otherwise and there are plenty more videos from even Apple friendly guys. But as you own an iPad Pro why don’t you show me a video and put your iPad half on the table with a 15 kg weight on the other side to convince me I’m seeing it wrong....

These silly tests are just clickbait.

Any logical person isn’t going to try to forcibly bend an expensive piece of technology.

Who forced these people to buy these products? There’s no gun to anyone’s head forcing you or anyone else to buy, buy, buy!

There’s no satisfying everyone. That’s a fools errand.

I really question some of these posts and YouTube videos. Do people now adays really have NO common sense???

What is this talk of “not respecting” the devices? You guys keep deflecting from the evidence at hand - THE NEW IPAD IS WAY TOO THIN AND HAS STRUCTURAL WEAK POINTS. PERIOD.

I love iOS and Apple devices and feel that they’re better designed than competing android devices. That doesn’t mean I can’t be critical of obvious problems. The new iPad needs thicker metal and glass and the the holes in the body are completely stupid from a structural standpoint - especially the pencil charging hole.

Quit being so insecure and denying the obvious.

It has nothing to do with natural vs man made sapphire. Apple used to actually use sapphire crystal for the camera cover. The last few years they have switched to regular glass that has a “sapphire” coating (kinda the same idea as an oleophobic coating). While this protects from light scuffing, it does not actually protect like true sapphire because the underlying glass is not hard enough.
I’ve never scratched a camera lens on any of my iPhones. If Apple used pure sapphire, it would make it ridiculously expensive. Most people shouldn’t have a problem with scratches.

By the way, at the beginning of this article the image of Bwrin1‘s bent iPad sitting on a table is a good example of what will commonly be happening. This person isn’t manhandling the iPad - it was simply in a backpack and ended up SLIGHTLY bent. It doesn’t need to be completely bent in half or destroyed for there to be a problem. If my iPad was bent even a millimeter it’s completely unacceptable.

You missed the point then and don’t know what you’re talking about. Sapphire is supposed to be able to handle a level 8 harness test and it scratched at leve 6 which means it isn’t as durable as sapphire used in some android devices. It’s not supposed to scratch at level 6 so it shouldn’t even be called sapphire. What part of that do you not understand?

The problem with these YouTube channels is that they’re taking these products out of the hands of someone who could really use it.

Wanton destruction for the sake of views and clicks. It’s not real science or testing. It’s entertainment, but for who? And what’s the point?

It would be cool if one of these channels said, “hey, we’re not gonna destroy this iPad Pro and Pencil. No! Instead, we’re gonna go find an artist who would love to have one, but can’t afford it. In giving it to them, we’ll not only be changing their life, but they’ll be able to create art and entertainment that will change other lives, too.”

Sure, that’s sappy AF. But the only thing these channel’s videos do right now is create threads like this, where everyone is yelling about their own personal view and unwilling to accept that MAYBE there’s truth to the other side of the argument.

What’s the point of this thread? Of any of these “bendgate” threads but to create disillusionment and anger?

I mean, I’m guilty. I’ve sat here and tried to defend that fact that it should be common sense that these products are fragile, not because they’re built faulty, but because this is exactly what we’ve asked for. You want sleek and thin and pretty, but that comes at a cost, both in the sense of money and fragility.

Anyway. I think I’m done. I’m gonna go draw on my iPad and do some good, and not contribute to an endless cycle of one sided opinions and nonsense rhetoric.

Maybe they're not apologists but rather Apple employees or bots downplaying the issues. When it comes to other brands I don't see people defending, for example, the lowering of build quality and durability of off-shore made Sears Craftman tools.

The devices are not all EQUALLY fragile. The new iPad is waaay too fragile. Much more so than the 10.5.

It’s glass. It’s aluminum. It’ll shatter. It’ll bend.

We don’t eat rocks because teeth are fragile. That doesn’t mean I’m mad at my mom for weak teeth genes.

Well, I've actually reported and had a bot account shut down on Slickdeals so they exist.

It’s kind of awesome that you assume enthusiastic Apple fans must be employees or bots, because that’s more likely than, say, the reality of the situation which is...people on this thread are just enthusiastic Apple fans.

This is one for Mulder and Scully.

The phones are ridiculously expensive. The lens cover is tiny. I’ve had genuine sapphire on $100 Chinese watches!

What this all points to is Apple being cheap, cutting costs and pushing margins into the stratosphere to compensate for flatlining demand.

Also because of profit and money obsessed CEO.
