Music and backlight it is.

Kinda tells you the direction the iPod is going in if "Music" is an option. Instead of browse (your music, which is understood) it's now the more informative music.

Am I looking into this to deeply? :)

Maybe it's "music" ?

music = 5 characters
extras = 6 characters

edit: oops, didn't realize that people already figured it out. :) I had to register and all that good stuff

Lack of menu selections

Well, if this is the main menu, these selections are a good indication of nothing 'new' in this update other than click-wheel and size possibly.

A rather big yawn!

Now i am looking forward to seeing Sony's offerings when it comes out, if ATRAC isn't the only file type allowed on it. I will not upgrade from a 3g to this 4g if there aren't some major new features. Already have a 1g for nostalgias sake.

The picture looks like the in ear headphones not the earbuds. Maybe the new ipod ships with the in ear phones instead of the mediorce bud style.

Airtunes???

Kinda odd that a new iPod would be introduced that doesn't seem to support Airtunes and the Airport Express, huh? Guess this mean that the iPod won't be a remote music source for a whole house wireless music system... (I'm just going off that main menu... Of course, it could be under that Extras menu!)

Looks like the same as shipped with the 3g Ipods

i think you are right. the in ear phones have skinnier pointier tip leading to the wire...but i haven't seen the standard ear bud for a year

Holy S%#@, this is exciting. I've been holding out for an update, now it's time to cough up the cash! Hopefully the shipping date won't be too far out...

Well, if this is all there is to this 'update' to the iPod, it is now wonder they are debuting it through a magazine article. What would Steve do to wonder and amaze us at a press conference or regular product release with this seemingly mediocre 'update'

If it's going to be on Newsweek, I'm thinking it's actually going to be immediate... If not, a VERY short wait.

They've got national publicity. They aren't going to drop the ball this time.

Hopefully Jobs will mention something about computers in that article too! Let's reel in the switchers...

I feel like this is the case - well I certainly HOPE it's the case. They've got competition in the market, if they fix things like the battery life and perhaps add a few features or make it smaller, people will buy these things in DROVES. Not like they're not doing it already...

If they only have one color (white), then they shouldn't have supply problems either. I think that the reason that the mini's been having supply problems is that they make it in 6 or so different colors, so people order it in, say, silver or pink or blue or what, and have to wait for them to make that particular color.

the headphones SJ is wearing are the regular ones, the in ear version don't have the kinda white stick with the buds coming off them.

Innovation?

Innovation?

putting a click wheel on it. I am seriously hoping that this is just a product improvement (i.e. version 3.1 maybe), and the August rumors of an iPod update are true for a 4g iPod

And I don't think improving the battey life is worthy of a generation upgrade, that should have been done a long time ago. Apple really has to work hard if they want to maintain the iPods leader status, there is a lot of competition coming directly at them

I doubt they'll release these now and then another new one in a month... too many supply issues. If they didn't change the hardware (click wheel) that'd be one thing- a software update - but if they do that they'll piss a lot of people off as people upgrade to the newest one... don't want to release too many products too quickly. If they do it slowly they can get more people to buy them and maybe upgrade from one to the next.

yes, I agree with you. But maybe this is the new outer case design which will follow in the following genration, but the 4g could incorprate a color screen and updated firmware.

Also, this could just be a prototype for the next generation and Steve is using it in the cover shoot. Which could mean no new iPod on Monday, and following up in the article that new iPods are coming in August.
This would be much more Apple-like, and using the prototype in the cover shoot alludes to a New iPod without giving away any new design features.

no

take a close look of the cover of newsweek magazine with steve jobs holding an ipod it has a clickwheel from the ipod mini, yep that is not the first gen ipod wheel that is a click wheel. talk about original, advertising for a new ipod on the cover of a national magazine, talk about crushing sony,
