The Mac Pro is a local product, Ming-Chi Kuo is located at China where NDA arent enforced the same, as when the nMP was introduced he never anticipated a thing about the nMP in 2013.

Is the Mac Mini made in USA too? Maybe that's why there is no speculation from Ming-Chi Kuo about it, as well as nMP.

Seems like another CPU transition is inevitable.

I think so too. Not this year, maybe not next year, but it seems inevitable that Apple will take control over the whole platform.

People who use bootcamp or vmware (80% of my work time) will have to find another solution but we are a solid minority of Mac users.

"MagSafe-like adapter"

How will it work? I really don't understand why they want to remove it.

Its one of the best features on a Mac. When I had a PC i pulled it down several times, has never happened with my MBPs in six years.

Walt Mossberg says he uses his iPads for all his work, Tim Cook says the same. Weirdos.
Normal people do all their work on iMessage so I don't know what the fuss is about.
You can send a resume with full screen balloons falling down or lasers! How cool is that? Who needs those old fashioned keyboard things!
Heck the iPad Pro can edit two streams of 4K video.

well kinda s/

I heard Walt Mossberg say on a podcast this week he writes all of his stuff on a Macbook Air.

It wouldn't have been ready for Christmas if they'd waited for Kaby Lake because the chip for the 13" isn't released until January (and probably won't see volume for another month or two after that) and the chip for the 15" won't be released until June (and not in volume for a month or two after that)

I feel like it would be really nice if people read the thread at this point.

I was just responding to the comments made by people who are questioning why Apple are releasing a new Macbook Pro using Sky Lake rather than Kaby Lake. Because they wanted the Christmas business rather than let Microsoft have it all which is something they wouldn't be able to do if they waited for Kaby Lake.

Someone please tell me why Apple going with Skylake is better than jumping directly to Kaby Lake. I assume they will use a more powerful version than what's out for the Kaby Lake CPUs at the moment.

Because we are tired of waiting.

Nothing prevents Apple from releasing an upgraded MBP with Kaby Lake next year, when the CPU is available in volumes.

I think that's exactly what will happen. We'll get late 2016 mbp this year and a late 2017 (maybe early 2018, depending on how much Intel manage to screw the pooch this time) on the same design. Kaby is a minor update to Skylake so there shouldn't be much to do.

What is the point of thinner and lighter if the screens get smaller? I have a 2012 15" rMBP and it has always seemed small. I would love a 17"crafted from 2012 weight ratios. If they've made them thinner and lighter again then give me an 18"model.

I would love an 18" MBP with thin bezels and lightweight design.

My 2010 17" doesn't run very well in OS X, although Windows still runs well on it. I can't seem to want to go to the smaller sizes.

Hey guys - remember the Mac Pro? The Airport and Airport Express? The Cinema/Thunderbolt Display? The Mac Mini? The iPod Touch?

What's so different about Apple today relative to 5+ years ago?
Oh, you don't know what's different? I will tell you then. Their former CEO passed away and they hired a guy who has no clue about the meaning of the word innovation when it comes to computers. But he is a social justice hero and a visionary when it comes to watch bands.

Literally nothing. Apple doesn't respect its consumers. No Idea why so many of you are shocked.

Or, drying our tears and looking at this logically and armed with facts, they couldn't update the 27" which already has skylake to Kaby Lake because the appropriate Kaby Lake processor does not exist. The 21" could certainly have been updated yo Skylake but it really wouldn't have moved the needle in any case.

Because Intel cannot be trusted when they rush out new CPUs. Just ask Microsoft. Apple is very conservative when it comes to relying on latest silicon from anyone and it has probably paid off. It's just hard to prove a negative.

I just don't get it. If Apple was just going to use the Sky Lake chips, then they should have updated the Macs last year instead. All the people who want the Kaby Lake chips with this update are right to do so. If Apple wants us to pay a hefty premium for their products, then they should put the latest components in them, not last year's specs. At this point, Apple might as well wait till next year to update the Macs. We've waited 4 years now, so what's another year.

Skylake wouldn't have been possible in 2015. It was quite buggy early on. The two appear to pretty similar on paper, given that intel extended the duration between process shrinks.

What about the Mac mini?
No idea.
I'd like the quad core option to return, for starters. Maybe make the PSU an external power brick and use the space to fit a dedicated GPU. Basically, take all the specs from their iMac and put it in the mac mini, but without the display. That would be my dream desktop in a nutshell.

What I don't really get is all the complaining about pro users not being able to use Macs for their work. Ok, I don't think they should remove the SD slot, bad move but there's always an adaptor.

Maybe it's because I'm not a pro user, I don't know what would actually define a "pro" user or I mustn't interact with these kinds of people who have the difficulties.

I'm just a software developer, website designer on the side. I also have a business making 3D printed sculptures, so I do a lot of 3D software work. I'm a semi-serious photographer, I do a lot of photo editing and a fair amount of video and sound editing. My wife, outside of her day job, is a part time illustrator. Other than that my best friend is a sound engineer who also uses a Mac.

So maybe we're not classed as "pro" users but we've never had a problem achieving anything on our Macs. Maybe we have to use the occasional dongle or adapter to achieve certain tasks. But that's about it.

I'm using a 2012 iMac, definitely not what you'd call a "pro" machine, even though it was maxed out at the time of purchase. But I still manage to achieve everything I want on it. All that while it's also being used to stream HD video to 3 or 4 people at a time.

So I may be in a minority, but I'm actually really happy with my iMac. I'm considering an upgrade to one of their new ones once announced. But I don't really need it, this ones still doing a great job.

*There was probably a point to this, but I forgot it while waffling on :D

I get the impression a lot of Mac users like buying new stuff for the sake of buying new stuff. You rarely see explanations why people desperately need that massive 12% boost in CPU performance when they already have a relatively modern Mac. I shouldn't moan. I want Apple to continue making as much money as possible so..... ;)

Yes? Kaby Lake was only announced 2 months ago and you expect them to ship?

LOL.
Quite a few Kaby Lake Windows machines on the shelves at the moment. I don't know though if these chips are more impressive than whatever Apple might go with in with their Macbooks though.

Hope they keep the sd card slot, it'll be one less adapter to carry around. I love it and use it a lot for my photography.

Can we definitively say, based on the available data, that Apple's product release cycles have slowed down to a crawl relative to five - ten years ago?

I would imagine that the new campus is taking up a lot of employees time. I can't even fathom how difficult it is to move a company the size of Apple.

I honestly am shocked at how unappealing this updated hardware sounds. Did Apple hire the gimmicky gadget designer from Samsung?

There's not a lot of exciting things happening with traditional computers that Apple makes. Gaming hardware continues to push forward, but CPU's and the components Apple cares about for Mac there's not a lot happening. People keep morning about Tim Cook neglecting the Mac, but there's not a whole lot Apple can do here in a very mature market. The performance bumps I will see from my late 2013 MacBook Pro to the new Skylake model will be very minimal at best. Apple is not getting left behind really at all.
