Yea I don't buy this either. An entire event to say here are new MBPs, slightly thinner but looks more or less the same, usbc, and a touch strip? Few demos of the strip with certain apps. Then a MacBook that's 1" bigger with an extra port. Would be very underwhelming after such a long wait.

Wouldn't be the first time.

If you really care about GPU's then Windows is where you should have already gone.

I've been patiently waiting with a 4 year old MacBook Pro for about a year to see where these new ones end up as far as meeting my needs. This 4 year old MBP run non intensive graphics tasks very well, still. No issues. If it's still $2400 to get a discrete card, I'm not sure I can justify it. My MacBook is a content device, a photo organizer, and iTunes organizer. Why would I pay $2400 to run Civ 6 when I could get an ASUS ROG for $1200 and run it even better.

Someone please tell me why Apple going with Skylake is better than jumping directly to Kaby Lake. I assume they will use a more powerful version than what's out for the Kaby Lake CPUs at the moment.

Kaby Lake came out only a few months ago. If apple plans to ship soon there's no chance in hell that they could ship with kaby lake

If it's true that no iMac will be announced I'll be very pissed off... My current iMac won't last for another six months and I've got no interest in portable computers... It is buying one of the current (and already outdated) iMacs or moving back to Windows... Not happy with either option.

The 27" inch iMac has a CPU that is as up to date as it's possible to be

MBA better be retina display AND have thinner bezel or bust!

Doubt it. Otherwise it's just a 13 inch MacBook retina. Which kinda doesn't make sense, surely the 13inch will be the entry line of laptops.

we will know soon enough champ.

Let's not allow facts to get in the way of a good rant post. Lolz

It's not the hardware that would make "jumping ship" so onerous, it would be getting used to the awful OS that is Windows. Many video editors have left after the FCP fiasco, but they went to Premiere for Mac. And many of them are cutting on 5K iMacs. I'm talking about professionals in broadcast shops using iMacs. That's still not something I want to do, as I like server grade hardware and my 2012 Mac Pro Tower is still chugging along. I'm hoping they update the trash can Mac Pro, but it may be on a 3 or 4 year cycle now. EVERYTHING else in this long thread is speculation and you can basically take many of the posts and insert a few different names and they're exactly like posts that were put up 10 years ago. Let's just see what happens on the 27th and skip all the bloviation and drama until then.

Apple have not done themselves any favours with their annual major OS updates, no "pro" users wants to deal with unstable major software annually . Windows 10 is not a bad OS and it is stable, and that is a big plus. These days I have more issues with my Mac Pro than I have with my windows box.

Case in point my 2013 Mac Pro BT , buggiest implementation I have ever seen and apple did it see the need to fix it, forcing me to go wired . And I was using apple wireless
KB and mouse . Maybe if apple stops treating OS X as a markerting stunt along iOS to sell devices we might go back to having better software than windows....

I like your comment - about 'gimmicks'...I'm not very knowledgable in the tech field but like the reliability I've had with Apple. I have a 2013 11" 8gb Air that works fine for my needs I also switched my wife and I over to IPhones. I've had 3-4 Dell Laptops and a few Pcs...all had troubles and I went with Apple and have been pleased. I bought my daughter (this past Christmas) an IPhone 6s and a 2015 MBP retina with I7 and 16GB and my wife a 27" Imac with fusion drive and a Time Capsule and also an Apple Watch. I need 2 more laptops for my younger kids and am wondering if I should duplicate my daughters 2015 model and hopefully save a few bucks or go for the new MBP coming out? I want them to have nice products that will be trouble free, but wonder if the new ones will just be 'gimmicks' or possess needed power upgrades (needed for young teens)? I welcome any helpful comments/advice.

Once apple release the new machines on Thursday , many good people on here will be able to offer advice if these machines are a good upgrade . Stay tuned .

October 2015 - Microsoft release surface book with Skylake processor
October 2016 - Apple refresh Macbook Pro, with Skylake processor

Why the god damn wait, Apple? Why? That's just an insult to your userbase.

I can't help but laugh in the inconsistencies in your post. Windows 10 was released in July 2015. Windows 10 anniversary (you know what that means right?) was released a little over a year (because it slipped, because it was garbage) later.

The Skylake in the surface book was the 15 watt ULV variant. The Skylake in the rMBP will be the 28w variant that wasn't released until June 2016. Looks like we've got another "tech expert" here

I need Kaby Lake for the 2016 iMac; it will be the most powerful processor for my needs! Oh, & I expect it to be waterproof down to 10 meters

For a second I thought you were serious. It's no less ludicrous than a lot of the other posts in these threads then I read the waterproof bit and :p

I hope you realize that it's not Intel's fault that technology has run up against a physics wall. You don't actually think Intel engineers are sitting on their thumbs just partying and killing time. That would dumb to even consider. I'd wager they're experimenting and doing their best to come up with the next big step. It's just not as easy as some of you think.

its really time for MacBook Air to realize its destiny:
a keyboarded GUI for apps
not using Intel. Powered by A10 or A10+ or A11.
Convergence.

The skylake will be good enough, but i wanted to follow up that I need to submerge the thing to get it into my evil underwater laboratory :p.

I think it's still a year or two (or maybe three) out but it definitely won't be a macbook air. A macbook, maybe a padbook*, but i will be seriously surprised if this transition doesn't happen at some point no matter what its called.

If or when Apple does this, it will be a hybrid a la Surface Book. The only difference is, it won't run Intel processors & it won't run non-App Store apps.

It isn't Intel's fault that they are struggling with the 10nm process.

It is Intel's fault that they STILL push quad-core CPUs as their top-end mobile and top-end consumer desktop products. I'm still using the first quad-core MBP, which was initially released 5.5 years ago. In all that time, the increase in CPU speed has been minimal. There is no reason Intel couldn't release 8-core consumer grade parts years ago. Despite this, it looks like we have to wait until at least 2018 to even get 6 cores with Coffee Lake, let alone 8.

I am skeptical about the touch bar.

Keyboards are designed such that you don't need to look at them.

They are parallel to your line of sight.

With a touch bar, it's reliant on graphics rather than keyboard layout memory, and so you're supposed to look at something that's in a complete opposite direction of your display in order to manipulate something on your display.

It seems at that point you might as well just make a touch display. I know that Apple has said you would get fatigue, and I guess that this bar is for limited use, which minimizes fatigue.

I had long assumed Apple was going to keep paring the Mac back more and more—somehow making it simpler. But this seems to be an investment in making the Mac more featured, in a way that kind of reminds me of PCs of old, such as any old random PC laptop that might have "media" keys above the keyboard, etc. Obviously not from use, from but from the idea, it sounds a little bit gimmicky.

That's a big assumption (the won't run non App store apps part) and I think will not be true, at least not before they do (or do not) for their Intel computers. There is nothing about ARM or A* that makes this necessary and in fact I think that a processor transition would make them shy away from that move. They'd need all the help they can get from developer to cross-compile inside and outside the App Store, at least for a few years.

I can't see Apple making a hybrid notebook/tablet. It just seems distinctly un-apple-like. I think Apple are likely to stick to making products with either a keyboard OR a touchscreen, not products with both.

I can see Apple sticking a high performance ARM CPU in a future MacBook with minimal other changes or problems however. I don't think your typical MB buyer would be affected. Also, as Intel apparently are going to start using their fabs to make ARM CPUs, perhaps some Intel engineers might figure out how to make some of the compatibility problems 'disappear'...

MacBook Pro, and all desktops are a completely different story. Intel CPUs for the foreseeable future. Except for I guess a slight possibility of going AMD with Zen, or Zen+.

Never could get into why Apple would wanna make a hybrid laptop design. To me, that just means u wanna give up your iPad.

The only thing perhaps would be since a hybrid would still be thinker than an iPad, may still want one.
