The problem is it's very possible the machines will be announced at WWDC but not available to ship for 1-2 months
Do we really think Apple would intentionally tank their sales numbers for 1-2 months? They would take a major hit on Q2 numbers if they did that…the shareholders would not be happy…

Would be nice to see mini-LED and wi-fi 6e, but have a feeling we won't see those until 2022 models.

intel is the only company with a 6e model that consumers can purchase, which is a development in the last few months and 6e routers currently available are really, really expensive. i do have one, and it's phenomenal, but they're far from the norm ATM.

my guess is the hardware available to these devices was locked down many months ago, and given that even the ipad just launched didnt have 6e, these will probably skip it too. mind you, $30 or so will net you a 6e modem by intel to stick into any computer that has a motherboard which supports its m.2 spec. keep in mind, that's $30 shipped individually to the consumer, not at all the cost apple would have the negotiating power to reduce based upon the bulk quantity they'd order.

6e is definitely the standard for wifi 6 that will stick for years until wifi 7 (also a major leap forward) drops, but that's not ETA until 2024 /25.

I’m so desperate that I’ll order it fully loaded if that means i get it a few weeks earlier.
I need one too. Thankfully I still have my 16" Intel model but I want an Apple Silicon 16". I'm just trying to look at this realistically in terms of shipping. Wish I had you funds to get a fully loaded one. 😁

On the contrary, they will do fine. Their resellers will offer steep discounts and the any built up inventory will move fast. Their guidance for this quarter was already conservative.

I agree. The USB-C only design is one of the smarter choices by Apple. Makes little sense to pull back on it. Especially since any professionals have already adapted.

The versatility and flexibility of USB-C is sublime.
As someone who pre-pandemic gave presentations in many, many venues -- for the past 5+ years, they've ALL had an HDMI cable sticking out to plug your laptop into an Epson projector. EVERY venue. I'd also argue that Apple should have included VGA ports in its pro laptops prior to that -- because every venue had a VGA cable sticking out to plug into their Epson projector.

I'll be the first to buy one, but I just hope high-end audio interface gear can achieve compatibility with the M processors soon. Apogee estimates Fall 2021. UA doesn't have an estimate. In the meantime, my 16" 8-core i9 MBP scalds my thighs worse than the any McDonald's coffee. I'm sooooo bummed about how much I spent on that 16" laptop back in 2020. I bought it for live stage use, but compared to my 2014 i7 iMac, the MBP single core processor speed is just too slow to keep latency down in a Logic session. If the M2 MBP is faster and quieter, it'll be a great companion for techno-savvy kids in bands.

I'm calling this one "random guessing" based entirely on the claim of a 10-core chip with 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores.

The M1 has 4 efficiency cores. The A12X/Z have 4 efficiency cores. The A14, A13, A12, and A11 all have 4 efficiency cores. Apple has already set up the OS to shunt low-priority work to the efficiency cores at all times, even when the performance ones are available, and they've obviously decided that 4 of those is a good number to have available for low-priority processes.

I would, therefore, be genuinely surprised if Apple shipped an M1X (or whatever, but that's my bet as to what it'll be named if it uses the same core architecture as the M1) with anything other than 4 efficiency cores, regardless of how many performance cores it has.

I said this, repeatedly, long before Prosser. I also said they will have M2’s.

On a laptop, which one presumably buys instead of a desktop so one can take it on-the-go, makes a lot of sense to have an HDMI port. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been out of luck with my MBP because I forgot my USB-C-to-HDMI adapter when in a client‘s conference room, a courtroom, or a hotel.
Exactly. Your presentation is effectively cancelled if you misplace your USB-C to HDMI dongle.

Really odd choice to bring back HDMI as a port imo.

USB-C, USB-A, SD card.

I wish the industry would quickly adopt USB-C as a standard for video out/in.
No, no, no. Every venue for presentations has an Epson projector with an HDMI cable sticking out. Every single one of them. Without a dongle, current MacBooks cannot present.

Yeah, for your use case the HDMI port is extremely important. For someone else the important use case is an SD card slot. For someone else it is a USB-A slot. And so forth and so on. The problem is that since these ports are dedicated you need to pull I/O bandwidth away from other ports to dedicate it to whatever ports Apple has added to try to cover the most use cases. Then the device ages and you're left with reduced I/O due to dedicated ports you no longer use due to them being slower than newer dongles plugged into your other ports...

The beauty of USB-C/TB 3 ports all over the MBP is that every professional is able to get the I/O port combination that works best for their workflow. Not the workflows that Apple has deemed important enough to add a port for. In addition to that since the port is 40Gbps you have enough bandwidth to cover an extremely large number of I/O improvements for years to come. A new SD card standard improving read speeds excessively to make pulling down those 100MB RAW files faster? Just upgrade your dongle and go to town.

With USB4 coming around the corner. I imagine the wider industry will be going this way as well. Would even be a lot better for a presentation scenario as you could provide both video and power over the single USB-C cable. Just like it would suck to leave your HDMI cable at home the same can be true for the power cable...

BTW you don't even need dongles just a USB-C to HDMI cable and you're all set...

Video chat via Apple's MacBook Pro with 720 camera is almost embarrassing compared to other manufacters
onboard cameras
I suspect that will change when the true Pro M1's ship.

If that doesn't change, Apple will have some explaining to do.
You do realize the thickness Apple is constrained with, correct?

Not a MBP vs. iPad (Air/Pro) comparison — it’s the best I could find with a quick search -- but it still showcases the problem. Look how much depth the MBA display (a.k.a. “lid”) takes up versus the entire thickness of the MBA — it’s about half the iPad at best.

Sounds believable. Even with the chip shortages around, I expect that these models will be priced high so the numbers sold will be relatively small (for Apple) ie so Apple will likely be able to fulfil demand.

... or they could just put in a USB hub inside the case and spit it to all the ports. You would not get the full bandwidth if you were using them all at the same time. Honestly, split one thunderbolt port and use it to feed all the legacy ports. I doubt it would be much of a problem. You could even power down the old ports when you were not using them.

I wouldn't count on a MacBook Pro shipping in June at all. Just like the iMacs they were introduced the month before and shipped in mid May. Due to COVID expect shipping to be sometime in July.
Yeah it was literally 4 weeks after the event the iPad Pro/Apple TV etc shipped so I expect it will be…

Pre-Orders - 18th June
Shipping - 9th July

They will make it up on the pre-orders. Demand is pent-up for these MacBooks and they're going to sell tons of them.
