Suddenly millions and millions of Sandisk, Kingston USB-A memory sticks become obsolete.

Yeah, I really, really hope they don't completely dump the USB-A ports on the MacBook Pro. At least give us one full size port and a bunch of type C's. And I don't know how I feel about the flatter MacBook style keyboard. Seems unnecessary.

Several usb-c makes sense but no sd card slot would be a big surprise and a mistake. For the MacBook it makes sense to make it as thin as possible but with the MacBook Pro it's going to need to be a little thicker to accommodate a larger battery anyway so there should certainly be enough space for one and its something all photographers use and would need an adapter. So hopefully that is wrong since there are no usb-c DSLRs or mirrorless.

You may wanna rethink your statement. How exactly do you connect your DSLRs and mirrorless cameras? And you don't think those usb-c to camera cables or usb-c card readers will come? You really think they're gonna be expensive?

And also, not ALL photographers use SD. Dammit. This argument keeps coming up and yet I know a whole bunch of photographers (pro and amateur) who liberately still use CF.

If getting rid of the SD slot means bigger battery, hell yeah, please. I can't even remember the last time I used the SD slot on my MBA ...

Don't worry.

At the end of October, there will be rumors that Apple will announce new Macs in November. :D
Apple has never, AFAIK, ever shipped anything past October without an announcement first. Either invites go out this week or a press release by the end of month otherwise Mac purchasers will be hibernating until spring.

Guess my resale value on my 2012 is still good ... so there's that ....? o_O
The great thing about my mid-2012 MBP Retina w/ SSD is that its still running amazingly well. I painfully paid a boatload of money for it over what I would have paid for a similarly powered Windows laptop. But 4+ years (and one battery replacement) later its still feels as fresh as the day I bought it. My wife is waiting for me to replace it so she can inherit it. Apple is still doing an awesome job of supporting it with macOS. It's disappointing that its taken Apple all of this time to come out with a real refresh but at least when they do build/sell something it lasts, hassle-free, for many years.

Why in the world would they bother with the the MBA? Just kill it off and have the rMB and rMBP. I don't see the point and if anyone does have a point please enlighten me.

I am hoping the new rMBP offers something significant over the rMB in terms of gimmicks (OLED bar, thin bezel) because I could have just went with the rMB instead for my needs. I am gambling on these "cool" features that are not offered on the rMB. We shall see.

I personally think this new "Air" is a larger version of the Retina MacBook.

12" & 14" MacBook
13" & 15" MacBook Pro

This would also explain why there is no new 11" Air, as mentioned in the article.

I planning on leaving my MacBook Pro 2010. Since everything is backup/accessible in iCloud, all I really need is an HDMI port (or at least a dongle having been used to my old Mini DisplayPort)

This baby right here won't need dongle

My wallet is ready for all of this.

Got two of those tiny 2 TB Samsung drives they are working great so far, for extra storage on a MacBook 12" until I can get the new MacBook Pro.

Maybe it is just me, but I type *much* faster using the MacBook 12" keyboard that so many complain about. Hoping the new MB Pro has the same or similar keyboard.

Also hope the MagSafe adapter stays on the MB Pro. Has saved me many times. But then again, I guess each time it saves my laptop, it costs Apple another sale of a replacement!

The only reason Apple would upgrade the MBA is if they are merely introducing a spec bump and not a redesign.

Bump now, redesign Q1 2017?

when they do build/sell something it lasts, hassle-free, for many years.

And this exactly is why I love Apple. Yes, a windows laptop may be cheaper (though it lacks macOS, which I don't wanna trade for anything in the world), but they just don't last as long and in the average time I keep (and use without problems or constraints) Macs, I would need to buy at least two Windows machines.

Entry-price-level.

Though I WISH they'd give it retina. I LOVE the MBA. The MB just doesn't do me any good for many many reasons and I love the tapered design which the MBPr lacks.

Whoa! My Mac had a SD slot?!

I agree my late 2013 iMac is still running great and i have no intentions of changing it unless iTunes adopts 4k content and the design changes. As for the MacBook pro lets hope this rumour holds.

As a teacher using a MBA, and a hobbyist photographer using a non-retina 13" MBP, the loss of the SD slot and standard USB ports will be devastating. More dongles and adapters, messy workstation environment. Next computer might be something custom built and Ubuntu powered... Disliking everything about Apple lately... Except the iPhone camera... might have to sacrifice that too when my 5S is ready to go.

I thought they were done with the Air. What's the point when the 12in MB is thinner than the original Air?

Highly unlikely, but would be great to see them give some love and attention to the whole line. One after the other: iMac, MBP, MacBook, and Mac Pro.

I could see them dropping the Air and having a bare-bones MacBook become the low-tier offer, but that's just me completely guessing and have no knowledge to support that.

I dunno, most of the comments remind of very similar discussion, or rather complaints, back when the very first ever MBA was introduced...
