LOL@dell laptops, they stink dude, period, they are trash, my friend was playing on his, he plays WoW and counterstrike 1.6, and he was running at like 90 degrees Celsius skipping mad frames, if your trying to compete you go all out, not on dell, so far dell has been the worst computer company i've ever encountered, having a dell xps tower, only since they bought alienware have i even recognized them as a company, even then alienware is super overpriced. Don't waste your money, trust your instinct and stick with the mac

Although I can't comment on their towers, their studio laptops are actually quite good. There are many worthy alternatives to a mac, especially when you factor in cost and performance. The current Macbook pro's are some of the slowest 'high end' laptops around.

I'm not a mac hater by the way. I really can't wait for the pro refresh, it's just I'm not blind to the alternatives.

With the new iPad, why would we even upgrade our laptops now???? What could it offer that the iPad doesn't??? I've now retired my iPhone, my old MBP and Microsoft Office. I am waiting patiently now for the new iRock offered in both granite and obsidian. Guaranteed to shatter Windows...

I doubt that. I have a 3G iPad on order - just because... well, just because. But, it will not be a replacement for my Air. I am sitting in a cafe right now having breakfast as I type this on my Air. I carried it here in a small leather messenger bag, oblivious to its 3 lb. heft. I have sent a few emails, PP'd some photos in Aperture, fixed some contacts on mobile me and read the newspaper on it. Oh and I did not need to prop up the screen up with sugar bowl and coffee cup in order to read it... I could live without the iPad but I could not live without the Air.

I would love to see a good MBA update - it is a pity that Apple won't offer one with 3G connectivity built in along with an opt in/ out arrangement with AT&T.

I think you'll be surprised with the iPad when you get it, I definitely was (obviously opted for the non-3g version). Aside from Aperture, nothing you listed wasn't something just as easily done on the iPad. And given the extent of photo editing apps out there, you can do a lot of what you do in Aperture on an iPad too. Given it is half the weight and longer battery life... we'll see, you might be right, I've just been really amazed how much work I can actually do on it that I didn't expect would be possible. A built in kickstand would have been nice to avoid the sugar bowl!

My first Macbook Pro

Hi guys im looking to finally make the switch to a mac and i'm just wondering which pro to buy? I'm using a acer 4gb, 500gb hdd at the mo. I just need a computer for internet access and hold all my pictures and music. Is it worth to go all out and get all the spec just to future proof myself for selling down the road or just get the standard model?? Cheers

Indeed. However, so far it's actually been rather difficult to find alternatives with screens that are competitive with the MBP in terms of gamut, brightness, and contrast. They seem few and far between. There are a lot of impressive PC laptops out there with nice "guts" in them, but then they skimp on the screens, especially in the smaller models. Most of the great screens are on the 17" models, and there are a few on 15.6" models.

As I kind of alluded in my previous post, the ONLY reason I don't own a MacBook right now is because of the screen quality, and the ONLY reason I don't own a current 13" MBP is because I couldn't justify paying $300 (the price difference in Thailand) more to get mostly the same guts with the better screen, but with a SMALLER hard drive.

In the end, I'm almost certain I will stay on the Mac route. Switching to PC would be more hassle than it's worth (especially with having to change my photography workflow from Aperture to LightRoom, not to mention giving up all of the little thoughtful details that tie OS X together so well), and I have a lot of work I need to get done in a little time and I need to be mobile to do it (my current 2007 15"MBP is fairly crippled and non-portable -- it's been through a lot). All I need to know now is whether or not waiting is worth it for the new machines. If it isn't I'll take the financial hit and go by a 15"MBP with discrete graphics immediately.

So, C'mon, Steve. Just give us the confirmed specs. That's all I ask right now. It looks like no matter what I'll be giving you my money, so out with it! :p

Everyone good news my friends father is a manager at an apple store and he says he only has a few mbp's left in stock and he is getting a shipment of mbp's monday. Now i don't know if they will be the refreshed one's but being that he only has a few mbp's and that its coming Monday means we may have some hope. His store never runs low on any product and that being said that he only has a few mbp's means very much. Thanks for your time!

You really only need the lowest spec model (even a MB would do perfectly fine), but with new models "possibly" coming out next Tuesday (and that's a big "possibly"), why not just wait since you'd basically be paying the same amount anyway. If the current models were heavily discounted it would make sense to just purchase now, but they're not. Just play the waiting game like the rest of us.

If that's all you're ever going to use it for then a white macbook would be absolutely fine. They're fully functional modern computers. Not some kind of underpowered netbooks or something.

It's just too bad that MR has lost all credibility on this topic by posting whatever speculation that shows up without any facts to back it up.

It is called macrumors not macfacts, I don't understand why some people don't understand that. The fact that some online resellers have MBPs on back order is enough facts for me to post rumors like this.

No need to be such a downer. Some of us are surviving on rumors and false hope alone.

How exactly are they supposed to get "facts" to backup a rumor? The only way it'd be a fact is if an Apple official came out and publicly announced the planned update which would obviously never happen.

Or reliable reports from suppliers, leaked pictures or documents, etc...

This current rumor does seem particularly thin on any details that might help us determine whether it's believable. Have to just hope that the guys running this site have done that vetting for us.

i have another tip for y'all.

i have an unidentified contact in a part of the world that is far away from where apple is located, but still in a country developed enough to be believable. he/she said that the new MBP, along with a new line of Elvis stamps and a wheaties box with the jamaican bobsled team on the front will be released next week, but they are unsure about who will win the next super bowl.

i think this is as helpful as the OP.

I think next week makes sense. There is a lull after iPad Wifi and before iPad 3G. If not next week it will most likely be a May or June update. I just hope they don't wait until WWDC because that's at the end of June this year.

I wonder why there is a supposed Arrandale shortage. They seem to be in abundant supply for Dell, HP, etc. Makes me think Intel and/or NVIDIA is doing something custom for them.

There was a big article a while back explaining that there were issues with production, and they were giving priority to the top tier/high volume manufacturers (Acer, Dell, HP...), and that companies that sell fewer laptops (yes that includes Apple) would have longer waits.

Also Acer apparently placed an enormous order with them for their new laptops... My own thought was that it was an intentional slap in the face to everybody else.

my whole point is that we have no idea when these things are being released. you hypothesized it may be next week, may, or june. kinda a wide range there. so wasting our electronic breath trying to peer into the future is just a waste of time. i say this with full knowledge that this makes me a hypocrite, since i too am wasting time on these forums.
