Ok, let me rephrase it then: does SB already contain mobile quad-core chips in the lineup that is currently shipping?

Intel 2720QM looks a very reasonable choice. Quad-core + hyperthreading, 2.20 GHz, 45W TDP, for $378 (official Intel price list). 2.20 GHz sounds low, put the clock speed is higher if only one or two cores are used (3.30 GHz when using a single core, can't find numbers for running on two cores).

Battery life is not a problem. The battery life is the same as dual core if you do the same things. If you use four cores, like running Handbrake, the battery will be empty quicker, but that one battery charge will actually do more work.

The problem is the maximum heat produced. The Macbook would have to be able to run permanently with 45 Watt being transformed into heat. There will be some redesign necessary, maybe a stronger charger as well, but inside the 17" and possibly 15" it should be no big problem.

+1 macbooks really need to be updated..who thinks theyll get rid of the white macbook??

I was wondering the same thing. With all these model numbers/pricing floating around they seem to have omitted the white MB. Not that it bothers me at all, but surprised there isn't anything on it. Maybe it will become an Apple only item?

(almost) confirmation of imminent launch

I was in my College's bookstore on Thursday and overheard an Apples Sales Rep talking to the Manager about setting up a display table downstairs (which is where the main entrance is). Not the most solid confirmation in the world, but considering that my school is like an advertisement for Macbooks/Pros (and laptops are popular among students in general), it would make sense for Apple to set up a special display to hype release of a new MBP.

Anybody else seen this...

Found this on some Danish site. No idea if it's old, new, fake, real, anything. But it's a cool picture all the same...

Yep. 200$ increase on the 17".

well if you configure the 17inch with an i7 right now it costs

$2699, which is $200 more than the new starting price

so all this means is that the i7 will not have an i5 option, however the 15inch will.

Probably means nothing,

however If they were planning on displaying new MBPs, maybe there is a redesign?

45W isn't bad, but 35W would be better.

so if they take out the optical drive they could have room for a discrete gpu, and more battery?

if they have more battery they could use the quad-core sandy bridges. which are just 10W more power than the dual-cores. price wise its no issue. apple put arrandale's fastest dual-core in the 15 and 17inch, which is more expensive than the sandy bridge quad cores

a little context

Just to put it in context, I've never seen any sort of Apple display set up in the bookstore before. Even at the beginning of the year. So it seems to me to be something out of the ordinary, thus my guess that it is indicative of a new product launch.

havent read the whole thread, but why would they release it WAY before they release osx lion? it seens a bit silly to me, why not release both at the same time. a WHOLE new MacBook Pro instead of a half new one

You get to milk the people for the update. Also, MBP is due for an update, waiting another 4-5 months would be hellish.

The timing is right for a redesign:

The original "Discrete" MacBook Pro existed from Jan 2006 to Oct 2008-- just under three years. Before that, the Aluminum PowerBook existed from Jan 2003 to Jan 2006-- three years!

The Unibody models were released in Oct 2008-- and we are getting close to the magical three-year mark!

Is Apple on a "just under three-year" schedule for MBP redesigns?

How many of you buy your MBPs for a three-year lifecycle? I do. The AppleCare warranty expires at three years and then you are on your own, and that naturally leads to consideration of a new machine. It's easier to justify the purchase of a new MBP-- and to get excited about it-- if it is a newer design from your old one.

The Unibody redesign of Oct 2008 took its cues from the original MacBook Air, released early in 2008. Besides the timing issue, isn't it reasonable to assume that the MBP will once again take its design cues from the Air, which was redesigned four months ago?

A separate issue: Why no big event?

Answer: Suppose you were the Emperor Named Steve and you were sick and couldn't put on your usual show. If you tried, the media would see that you were pale and gaunt and sickly and that would be the story plastered all over the news. The media would give second-shift to the new and exciting products you were unveiling. Maybe the new line of MBPs would be barely mentioned at all. Surely Apple doesn't want that.

Or, if Tim Cookie put on the show without the Emperor, then that would be the story. Second-shift would still be given to the products.

There is no way to keep the focus on the products and have an event while the Emperor is ill.

I'm excited to see the new mbp, but I am kind of sad to see my 8 month old mbp become "old" hardware. I hate how Apple does this to me!
