The lack of an SD card reader is an absolute killer for me. For my usage they were free to take away everything but that and a single I/O port. Unfortunately, once Apple takes something away they *never* give it back. I need to start looking into hackintosh viability with something like an HP ZBook Studio or Dell Precision. I'm already forced to use Windows 10 for certain things at work and I'd rather use Linux/iOS/die in a fire than voluntarily use that abomination at home.

Can I ask what you don't like with Windows 10? Since the anniversary update, I find it very good, even the Linux subsystem.

Anyway, the XPS 13/15 is user-upgradable and runs Ubuntu without issues right out of the box. I was getting 8-9 hours of battery life on it with the 13. It's a pretty nice computer..

Think of the TouchBar as an extra inch of screen.

Then add the fact that e v e r y s i n g l e t h i n g about this new MBP is better than the last gen. Literally, EVERY THING, by A LOT.

Why is it unreasonable pricing?

In terms of technological advancements is it comparably better for the time it is released compared to say a late '13? I bought a top of the range late '13 rMBP for less than what I can buy a top of the range rMBP today. Considerably less.

no ones asking you to buy it...

if you can't afford it, buy a normal macbook or get a better job

from all the whinging on here, they all expect to drive mercedes for the price of a toyota.

you get what you pay for, even the new microsoft laptop is up there in price...

Except we're getting a Toyota for the price of a Mercedes. This has nothing to do with people being able to afford it, it's the relative value for the purchase.

If Windows 10 decides to restart itself in the middle of a multi hour render again to apply it's all-important mandatory updates which may or may not be security related, re-install it's advertising garbage, and reset it's settings and file associations I'll go postal. Windows 10's sole purpose for existence is to try to sell you Microsoft products and services.

The XPS currently line only officially supports Windows 10, the Dell Precision equivalent model gives you far more configuration options including the ability to not buy Windows at all.

They messed it up with the laptops series

The have cut the Macbook Pro as the entry line giving them a new "pro status" and forcing people to enter again buying a Macbook. Just like the old days. But the thing is that the new Macbook is an expensive machine for the price/specs it has.

BTW, prices here in Spain are even worst. The one with the Touch Bar cost 1999€ (2190$) With the difference i can book a flight to NYC and buy there one

Because it is not in competition with the last gen MBP. Its in competition with the Surface, Dell XPS, Lenovo and more. You can get a Dell XPS, with 4K edge-to-edge display, up to 32GB RAM, user upgradeable and more for less that the MBP. Thats why it is unreasonable pricing.

EVERY THING like 16GB of RAM. the most ever put in a laptop, by a LOT.

Is this supposed to be ironic ? I cannot tell. Lots of laptops can have 32Gb RAM

My biggest realization was looking at windows laptops and actually trying them out and finding out I've been missing out on a lot of great things for years. Apparently Microsoft has pretty much caught up and I just never knew because I was so crazy over apple? Time to make a new windows laptop purchase

I just never liked the Windows experience. But I haven't really used any Windows computer since XP so maybe that has changed. I use Windows at work and they're still on XP and it's horrible. Either way would it be difficult to switch?

If using macOS is important enough to you, then I'd do it if I were you, because they've also adjusted prices to account for currency rates as well. Something that was missed in all of the day's craziness. The refurb's escaped that though, so now their "discount" looks like it's even better than before.

Yeah but I wonder how much money I'd get for my 2014 rMBP? I've also thought of going the iMac route and just having an iPad for on the go. I barely take my laptop away from the desk so maybe it doesn't make sense to have one. A 27" iMac would be sweet. I wonder if the Fusion drive is speedy enough? At least I could upgrade the 27" iMac ram later on.

Why do you need to upgrade? Is there anything wrong with your 2014?

I'm sure the 15" 2011 macbook pro was £1,600 back when I bought it then. Now they're from £2,349.

How many new versions have been released since that early 2011 model? Mine had a cd drive but I think the last main revision removed that right and was thinner? Did the price go up on that to?

I don't understand the £749 price increase since 2011 when honestly it doesn't seem much has changed.

Nothing to do with not being able to afford it. Im pretty sure most of the members on this have good jobs as they are able to buy apple products.

It is about whether a product is worth that money. Would you buy a knock off LV bag for the price of a real one? No you wouldn't.

I wouldn't mind spending money on a surface book because it offers more than the new Mbp.

Its about the worth of the product.

My last year MacBook Pro is going to have to last me for well until it dies on me. Can't justify these prices and I spend a lot on apple products each year.

For UK buyers there's a double increase. Apple has increased prices on everything in the UK due to the effects of Brexit. The 21.5 iMac was £1,199 yesterday and is now £1,449 today. The MacBook will have had an increase due to this, and because it's newer. So double whammy!

The refurbished base 15" MBP is now £10 more expensive than a brand new one cost yesterday morning.

No but perhaps it would give me a bit more longevity having what appears to be the last generation of laptops with a full (and sensible) array of I/O. Also maybe the 2015 supports 4K better than the 2014 models.

There seems to be a lot of complaints from people running relatively recent Apple hardware. I don't really understand that - I mean, I get it with phones and the fashion thing and changing every year, but with laptops? There is simply no justification for someone running a year or two old MBP to spend this kind of money on an upgrade. Some will anyway, but it's not a logical decision.

For those running older hardware (I'm still running a 2008 MB!), pro users who regularly buy high-end kit for their work and newcomers to MBP...well, it's a wincing price but the hardware is great, it's still the best looking laptop by a mile, will retain decent value and will last for years. The price IS horrible, but it's comparable to other high-end laptops.

The same thing has happened with cars in the UK. Back in 2007 I bought a (then) new Civic. It cost around £16k. At change time three years later, I looked at the latest equivalent model and the cheapest was £20k. We are so used to assuming everything gets cheaper that we are surprised when things actually jump in price, but it's the way of the world sadly.

Have you tried the options in the update section? You can set "active hours" so it knows when not to restart, or just schedule a safe time to restart. It works for me...

No - theres a Developer edition of the XPS 13 that includes Ubuntu instead of windows. I dualbooted mine and everything worked out of the box, and battery life was great on it (8-9 hours).

Yeah cause getting a better paying job is so easy right??

It never said that on the side of the bus!

Man I have a unibody macbook 09 and it even if I was offered a clean swap for a new macbook I'd probably not take it. I have 8gb of ram in it with a 2TB hdd. Sure it's a fair bit slower than the new models, but has a few usb ports and can easily store all of my files. More than what I can say about the $2000 2016 laptops.
