What do you mean messy?
They just cleaned up the line to only include two models. MacBook and MacBook Pro.
The Air is clearly getting nixed.
iMac is still rather fresh with the 5K display. They have time to update that one.
The Pro is a bit confusing, but I think many people end up choosing iMac 5K or rMBP15, so it makes sense that they beefed up the rMBPs first.
I agree regarding the iMac - it doesn't need any crazy change, but keep the internals updated when possible.
I don't see how it's a mess. If anything, the new lineup makes more sense than what we've had for the past two years. Ever since the MacBook with Retina Display came out, the MBA has stood out like a sore thumb to me. Why is it dubbed the "Air" if the MacBook with Retina Display is smaller and lighter? It was only a matter of time until they discontinued it. Now you have the MacBook with Retina Display, entry-level MacBook Pro with no Touch Bar, and MacBook Pros available in 13" and 15". That seems pretty intuitive to me. How many PC manufacturers have such a simplified lineup? Even MS is more confusing with its several numbered Surface variants.
I've felt that the past several years have been a messy line up as well.
This is how I feel it's a mess:
$999 13” MacBook Air
$1299 12” MacBook
$1299 13” MacBook Pro (2015)
$1499 13” MacBook Pro
$1799 13” MacBook Pro with Touch Bar
$1999 15” MacBook Pro (2015)
$2399 15” MacBook Pro with Touch Bar
And for some reason Phil pushed the 13" MacBook Pro as the successor to the 13" MacBook Air (likely because it has similar internal specs) but it's $500 more.
I feel like a simpler lineup would be a much easier marketing message for consumers:
12" MacBook
14" MacBook
13" MacBook Pro
15" MacBook Pro
(or go 14 and 16 on the Pro sizes)
Actually what was even decent was when they had a slide of the newest MacBooks up.
12" MacBook
13" MacBook Pro
13" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar
15" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar
Just cut out the rest already.
