did o2 not do this before and then change their minds about it cos everyone went ape sh*t about the data tarrif?

oh dear - looks like im pre-paying then, they are crap tariffs ,

only way they will get people on them crap tariffs is if they offer the phone for free on them!

Vodafone is better than 02 for calls and 3G so maybe its time to convert...

Vodafone does not support Visual Voicemail which is a deal breaker for me. O2 and Orange are the only options from my perceptive. I am thinking of leaving O2 given both the plans and the requirement to pay more to upgrade for a longer timeframe.

think the £45 a month, with 1200 minutes, 750mb data might be sweet spot.
The iphone is a premium product and as early adopters we'll gonna pay. Sure by the winter there'll be better deals but thats the price we pay hey?

I wouldn't be surprised to see all the other mobile carriers doing pretty much the same thing, maybe 3 & Tmobile will have the best deals?

If T-mobile et al want to impress their investors with new customer numbers and reduced churn, then they should simply offer more inviting tariffs than o2!

In bold. They cant do that can they? That isnt the agreement i signed. If i dont renew or upgrade, they have to keep me on my existing data plan surely? Makes sense for me to just buy a PAYG phone now, and stick with my expired contract.

I just called them, turns out in your contract it says that unlimited data is a promotion, and it states that they can end the promotion at any time. No matter when you signed up, they can definitely do this, because we signed a deal saying that they can.

I have already written to complain and told them I will be going elsewhere. Everyone should do the same.

just seen this on the bottom of the tarrif

Unlimited data on all smartphone tariffs is a promotion until 1 October 2010. Excessive usage policy and terms apply, see o2.co.uk

Isn't anyone bothered by the fact MMS is now not included in the unlimited text plan, and they're now charging 20p/MMS?

Not cool, O2, not cool!

I was thinking of taking up the O2 offer. The amount of months left on my contract at £20 each is about the same I can get for my 3GS on eBay and recommitting to another long-term contract with them, even if I lose the current 30% I get off the tariff each month.

Not now with the revised contracts, I'm getting a PAYG iPhone 4 and then ditching O2 at the end of my contract. Another gripe, charging 20p for an MMS when it's currently 2 text messages from your bundle. All over the board it's just awful.

Well I've just got off the phone to them and the guy I spoke to put me on hold to speak with their upgrades department, he came back and said that my current iPhone contract (O2 45 on iPhone: 1200 minutes, 500 texts and unlimited data) will remain the same and even agreed that if they tried to change it then it would be breach of contract.

Though in light of the other recent replies I don't really know who to believe, I don't even think the staff at O2 know what they're talking about.

Can you tell me how the hell it's free?

like all free phones, its not really "Free" you'll pay for the phone over the life of the contract.. Still you dont pay upfront for the phone.. I'm a older iphone 3g pay monthly customer & knew when the 3gs came out it wasnt really worth it.
So i get the iphone4 as a free upgrade

Yes! Very! but I don't know of anyone else offering an alternative, I haven't looked very hard yet admittedly.

It clearly states here that Existing customers will continue under their present terms, unlimited data usage with an Excessive Use Policy.

"Existing customers and those that sign up before the 24th June will continue to receive unlimited data if they stay on the same tariff with the same handset. However existing customers that upgrade to a new handset or deal after 24th June will be moved onto a capped plan from 1st October."

from the which article..

Settings>General>Usage. This will give you the LIFETIME data usage of the phone, it's not monthly. It'll probably me much less than you expect!

Lifetime is just since you last restarted the phone.

My current 'lifetime' is 3 Days 22 Hours, in which I've already received 587MB, and I haven't been using Wifi as my router is faulty. This reflects my average usage, I can't be doing with a 500MB monthly cap... :(

Hate to break it to you, but you do pay upfront for the phone.

Ok, so based on these two articles..

http://www.which.co.uk/news/2010/06/o2-ditches-unlimited-data-tariffs-216692

and

http://mediacentre.o2.co.uk/Press-Releases/O2-introduces-new-mobile-data-pricing-model-2a3.aspx

...and the fact that during the iPhone 4 Keynote address when Steve Jobs said that Facetime will be over WiFi only until the end of 2010....

I think this is why o2 are removing the Unlimited Data offer. Can you imagine 10's of 1000's of phones making Facetime calls over 3G with Unlimited Data?? The network would grind to a halt.

"However existing customers that upgrade to a new handset or deal after 24th June will be moved onto a capped plan from 1st October."

Hmmmmm... If you buy the iPhone 4 on PAYG you'll be moved to a new plan? Technically you've upgraded to a new phone.
