And, after all that finagling, you then have to swap back and forth between the handwritten note and the contacts app to enter it as an actual contact. This is the dumbest point they could possibly make.

Ever heard of writing to text transcription? It's not natively supported on iOS but it's been around for over half a decade on other mobile platforms.

If Samsung knows they've had features that iPhones don't have... what's the point of this commercial?

It's almost like Samsung isn't confident enough... like they're trying to make themselves feel good.

That's weird behavior from the #1 smartphone manufacturer in the world.
What a weird way of looking at things:
"If Samsung knows they've had features that iPhones don't have... what's the point of this commercial?"
How about the point of the commercial is to "advertise" the facts that they know are true. Are you seriously saying "yep here at Samsung we know X, Y & Z to be true so no point shouting about that, God forbid we put those things in our promotional material; that's just crass!"

Always ask yourself what will happen if Samsung didn't exist today? What if they got wiped out from the face of the Earth? What happens to these other industries?

I think NBA legends. I idolize Michael Jordan but so many fanatics give him so much credit for his rings. Same to Shaq and Kobe. Same to LeBron. It's a team sport. They didn't score every point and make every big play. You want to give credit to one guy or company but you realize Apple needs help from companies like Samsung, TSMC, Sony, Sharp, Foxconn, etc.

Samsung, Apple, Google, it's all teamwork. If Samsung never decided to spoof Apple and point out what some of their users might have felt the last few years, Apple will never realize their mistakes. Someone has to point it out them or arrogance and stagnation continues.

I thought the ad is brilliant. I looped it three more times. Might rewatch it again. For 2012, Apple users laughed at the Notes. Now everyone is following Samsung's lead and asking for an XL. In 2014, S5 was the most underrated Galaxy ever. Water-resistant AND removable battery? That's rare. Only Xperia ZR featured both.

Still kept headphone jack. Had wireless charging years ago back in 2014 with the S5. Same with fast charging. This was an ad that brilliantly showed Apple and their users a mirror. They are still partners. Give money to Apple to give some to Samsung.

Apple is dependent on Samsung. Only reason Samsung is doing this is because they are competitors in the same space. It's all teamwork. The iPhone X is assisted by alot of companies. Apple just happens to be John Williams writing the score. But the rest of the suppliers are playing the instruments.

Yeah... it's crass to show your opponent more than yourself in in a commercial.

It's almost like Samsung's features don't really stand on their own.

It should be enough for Samsung to say "we have these features... enjoy..."

But Samsung has to say "we have these features... and the iPhone doesn't..."

Do you see the difference?

BTW... HTC and LG don't have styluses either. How come we never see Samsung talking about other companies?

It just proves that Apple is a threat... despite not having certain features. That's Apple's strength: they're more than a list of checkbox features. And Samsung knows this.

This commercial is reassurance that Apple is doing something right if the #1 smartphone OEM is so worried about them.

Better privacy and security?
Vs Android sure, that's why it costs half the price. But vs other iPhones?
Also, Android is nowhere nearly as bad as it used to be a few years back. Aside from a poorer echo-system, the OS itself is pretty robust.

I don't understand the leap in logic that:

"it's crass to show your opponent more than yourself in in a commercial. It's almost like Samsung's features don't really stand on their own."

Why? Just because company A feels the need to belittle company B doesn't in any way detract from what company A is offering.

Really?:

"But Samsung has to say "we have these features... and the iPhone doesn't..."

Well that's called telling the truth, are you saying Samsung should be liars?

"It just proves that Apple is a threat."

Yep, you're 100% correct. It's called a competitive market place that all smartphone manufacturers play in; welcome to the real world.

Ok. Well you should contact Samsung about potentially being better at marketing their product than they are? Idk what to tell you. I think the average person watching this ad isn’t going to think as critically about this as you are. And people understand what’s familiar to them. Contacts in a phone are familiar.

With the note you have the option to hand write things. This was demonstrated. I’m guessing that was exactly the goal.

i never said i'm a marketing expert. but the job of marketing is to advertise the product and if it's causing me to ask these questions, they don't seem to be doing a good job.

If Samsung has the superior product with superior features... then that should be enough.

But clearly it's not enough... since Samsung has to go through its list of features line-by-line and show what Apple doesn't have.

You're right... it's perfectly within Samsung's rights to list these "facts" in comparison to the iPhone. But like I said earlier... Samsung's features don't really seem strong enough to stand on their own.

It's funny though... these types of commercials made more sense when the iPhone didn't have wireless charging, waterproofing, OLED, etc.

Other companies (and forum members) made fun of Apple for being "late" and always "catching up" to the competition.

But no one ever thought about what will happen when Apple finally adds these features.

These "new" features will benefit Apple... while the other companies just lost their advantage.

And the competition continues. :p

they didn't... they showed the iPhone X ad at the end but.. never mentioned "notch" ... i think some X users are a bit touch about the notch... lol. if all apps would hurry up and update for it, the notch would never be spoken of again.
yeah, its just the article said they made fun of the notch but they didn't

That's fair, the point that I was getting to is Samsung's overall stance of comparing hardware without comparing software which is one of the biggest factors in decision to switch platforms, they don't seem to appreciate the friction associated with switching OS platform and the associated ecosystem. Samsung seems to think that throwing hardware and kitchen sink at software UI and performance issues will provide a good user experience, which so far doesn't seemed to have worked.

And they have little control on hardware and software synergy and all the efficiency that it affords, leaving them to primary focus on hardware in their advertising and business model.

Are you aware that one of Android fanboys' biggest complaints against Samsung is all the software they add? To say they don't compete on anything but hardware is ridiculous.

"Bionic" is branding. Again, it's a new chip. Developers haven't taken advantage of it. Are you disputing its raw power based on benchmarks? Save that "benchmarks are useless" comback as it's just a tool to prove the potential is there. iOS 11 has its issues and is yet to be optimized for the new phones. You really think Apple "forgot" how to make chips and optimize an OS from the iPhone 7 which has been faster in speed tests than iPhone 8? They will get it right and it's not slouch right now. iOS 11.1 already improved things quite a bit.

Android is more of a monopoly OS than Apple...they have over 85% market share.

I laughed at the ad. I think Samsung is desperate to change the minds of people who don't care about the message they are trying to portray. The only relevant dig was the notch because the rest of the stuff is already in the current iPhone. I honestly think these ads are good for Apple. The more talk, the better.

I do actually like Samsung phones...I hate Android. It's fragmented and not updated. I owned Android since 2008 and just switched to iPhone X because of sick of 0 support, buggy OS, slow phones, and terrible battery life.

Where to begin? I was showing the Apple also touts hardware specs and you use "raw power based on benchmarks" to prove me wrong? Huh?

You are going to tell me Samsung has buggy, slow, software... and you are telling me that Apple are going to "get it right" with iOS 11.1? Apple I think has released more updates to fix bugs in the last few weeks than Samsung has released since the Note 8 came out...and yet the Note 8 works great. Apple has gotten rather sloppy in their software releases, so its a good thing they can easily release updates... they have to.

Android is a monopoly? That is a good one. You completely turned my comments into a knot. I was saying that both Apple and Samsung make great phones.. that's a good thing. If some of the Apple fans on here got their way, there would only be Apple. And that would be a horrible situation if we had only one choice.

They are portraying the stylus as if that's a plus. I do believe that a stylus can have practical applications on a tablet for such activities as illustrating, but why would you want it for writing notes on a phone? It's much easier and faster two type phone numbers and messages on the keyboard.

I don't think you have any idea how the S-pen works or the breadth of its abilities. Do people with smartphones jot down things on slips of paper? If yes, then the S-pen solves that problem, among many more. While the Note 8 is turned off, you can pull out the pen and take a note... same as jotting on a piece of scrap paper. You'd be done before you got the iPhone opened, opened the note taking app and started a new note page.

When Android is relatively comparable to the user experience that iOS has and the speed to complete tasks; that's when I will REALLY consider jumping ship.

Microsoft, Google, Samsung have amazing hardware that sometimes is so much better and cheaper than Apple's. Unfortunately their OS's are crap.

Its 2017... you are just wrong. I've used all the ones listed there and you are just wrong. The Note 8 user experience is joy to use.

I still can't see your point of view; what's actually wrong with Samsung (correctly) pointing out features that Apple didn't have?

There's nothing wrong with it. I even said that in the next line of my comment after the line you quoted:

"You're right... it's perfectly within Samsung's rights to list these "facts" in comparison to the iPhone.

Then I went on to say:

"But like I said earlier... Samsung's features don't really seem strong enough to stand on their own.
"

Here's a Samsung commercial that strictly talks about Samsung and no one else:

Shouldn't that be enough?

I guess not... because Samsung just made an ad that makes fun of people standing in line for iPhones. (again)

How many years has Samsung done that?

It just makes Samsung look weak... in my opinion.

BTW... I'm looking at the entire picture of the ad... not just the list of features.

Everyone compares Samsung's ads to Apple's "Mac vs PC" ads.

But here's the deal... Apple was in the weaker position when they were "attacking" the other guys.

So what does that say about Samsung right now?

I'd say Samsung is (still) scared of Apple.

This ad is basically showing things that Samsung did first. Fine.

Apple implements them later but with better integration...coping? Perhaps but I suspect the roadmaps are in place 2-3 years before - you can guarantee they are planning the 2020 iPhone now

Also this is partly due to Samsungs releases being 6-9 months AFTER apple...

Even the Samsung 8 didn’t rate faster than the 7 in real use.

Apple doesn't promote the benchmarks...I was telling you the chip is powerful. The most powerful.

Apple released iOS 11 too early, absolutely. But at least they'll update it (very quickly, already released 4 updates) and will get it right. 11.1 is already miles better than 11.0. Samsung gave me absolute crap for 3 years, never fixed it, and didn't care at all.

Yes they were; but you're not deriding Apple for taking that stance like you are with Samsung are you?
It was OK for Apple to do it because, I don't know, "weaker position"? Yet Samsung, being on a weaker position with their phones all of a sudden have to take the moral high ground or risk being judged by your standards?

Say what you want, but that was an awesome commercial. Tastefully done. I considered buying a Note 8 this year, matter of fact.

The rice thing was so relatable.

edit -- Absolutely no reason to try and defend Apple or Samsung here, fellas. Let's just appreciate tech (and good marketing). :)

Agreed. I love the forum heat it creates whenever these videos are released. I genuinely found this video good. I like both Apple and Samsung products, this ad literally showcased how it felt to own an iPhone up until I started buying Samsung phones too. They had neat features, what's to hate about them showcasing that while poking fun at honestly realistic topics Apple creates with their own products.

It's nice to hear confirmation of Samsung being weaker.

So all the checkbox features Samsung had that Apple didn't all these years... it turns out... none of that really matters, huh.

I say... let Samsung keep saying how Galaxy is better than the iPhone.

Now we know Samsung doesn't actually believe it. :p

There's obviously more to it than just a list of features...
