Congrats on falling for the MHz myth. There is a TON of optimization that has been done with the A4 for power savings and speed.

Im not complaining about the CPU...only the RAM. Save the congrats.

Good job Apple, you've successfuly copied design from DLINK:

Damn the iPhone looks bad.

Glass

I really dislike that both the front and back are glass. There is virturally no protection against damage if it is dropped. This design is going to be a CASH COW when it comes to profits made from repairs and replacements. There is no safe way to drop the damn thing without it being in a case. I really dislike using cases to protect my phones so I don't use them. Having to use a case to protect it takes away all of the effort put forth to make the device look nice.

<----- Pissed at new design.

I actually hope Apple clocks the new iPhone chip to the same speed as the 3GS just for speed comparison sake considering the rest of the hardware seems to be the same.

How can you say the hardware is the same? Have you seen the teardowns? EVERYTHING has changed down to the new shape of the logic board assembly.

Why would u want them to be clocked the same just so some geeks can make comparisons rather than getting the best experience possible?

I need to add, the "Metallic rim" is actually gray plastic painted silver. And wears off easily. This thing didn't quite last the 2 years it was supposed too (the battery ended up almost completely dead). In the end I switched to a 3GS after 14 months, and paying a fine around 80 usd, spread through several monthly bills.

I only miss the 5Mpx camera.

Thanks for the picture of the Knight Rider phone! There's something about older phones that whilst they could be either weak (batteries as you say) or strong and simple seem so dated fairly quickly. In any case hope you manage to get a 5mp camera back again if you decide to replace the 3GS sometime in future with what might be in the forthcoming model.

It runs the same, actually less powerful apps, than the iPad. Why would they add more RAM to the phone?

Remember, 2GB RAM in a Mac > 2GB RAM in a PC due to better memory management in the Mac. Just like with multi-tasking, I'm sure Apple has worked out the details.

Because the iPhone also runs phone processes which the iPad does not.

Apple apparently is making their RAM amount for the iPhone whatever their stock price is. If we can get their price up to 512, then I'd be a bit more happy (in more than one way).

Well it's really just for curiosity's sake. I'm not sure how much of a difference a reworking of the logic board will make considering it's basically just a piece of silicon holding the rest of the parts together and giving them paths to talk to each other. I guess I'd rather have Apple make the iPhone 4 be all it can be, but that doesn't stop my curiosity.

What I really love is the claims that the battery is a full 50% of the space in the phone. The squarish design seems to use space more efficiently giving more battery room without changing the external size much.

For me it means that perhaps my day won't end with the phone having gone flat well before I head home.

For those saying that people are whining about the 256MB issues, you need to step back and hop into reality for a second instead of immediately jumping to Apple's defense.

I have an iPhone 3GS, and I can have about 5 or 6 pages open and hop between them back and forth with no problems. The pages don't refresh annoyingly even when I hop out of Safari, check some emails, and then go back.

Fast forward to the iPad. I try the same thing with the iPad and I'm lucky to get one or two pages without refreshing. If I switch from one page to another, the second page will sometimes show broken image icons due to low memory. And then when I go back to the first page, it refreshes. I never have this problem with my 3GS.

Remember, the current iPhone has a screen resolution of 480x320 -- 256MB is perfectly fine for that. The iPad has a screen resolution of 1024x768 with the same 256MB of RAM. That's more than twice pixels both ways that have to be redrawn on the screen. That 256MB can get eaten up FAST.

Now if the iPhone HD does come with a 960x640 screen, it's going to run into similar problems with page refreshing in Safari.

For those of you saying that 256MB isn't a problem on the iPad, you obviously haven't gone to the iPad forums where people are having to purchase Atomic Browser or jailbreak their iPad to enable virtual memory to stop the refreshing in Safari.

Guys, did you try Virtual Memory on ipad ?

As for Safari refreshing on the iPad:

Any way to keep safari from reloading web pages?
No more annoying Safari refresh?
If safari is annoying you
How to stop Safari auto reloading?
Browsing forums in Safari problem
Safari, some pages reaload when you select them?

You get the idea -- wishing the problem with RAM and Safari didn't exist isn't gonna help.

can someone please explained to me the random little lines in the metallic casing?

i'm confused to why apple have done this, they normally go for the smooth and sleek look. but those lines are really annoying me and makes the new iphone look a bit *****.

Could the glass back be one step closer to having multi-touch gestures on the back of the iPhone? I recall a patent mentioning something about the concept.

I for one love the new look and will be eager to upgrade...I really hope it will come in white though. I'm not one for cases so when I had the black 3G, I hated the way the finger prints showed up on the back...needless to say I opted for the white 3GS because of this. I might reconsider the whole case thing being this things front and back will be glass  YIKES!!! I'll have nightmares about dropping it.

I Completely agree! But I'm not able to say that I've never dropped my iPhone, but only short falls, or small threats of it breaking. But now that the glass will be bearing the brunt of the collision on every corner, that makes me think that I might actually get a case for this one...

Hi,

I don't see why Virtual Memory couldn't be used, as Mazda 3s spoke of above. VM was a problem with slow spinning platter hard drives, but 16, 32 or 64GB of module memory would be a good way of using VM.

I still like this iPhone design. It reminds me of how different the G3 Clamshell iBook looked compared to the G4 Powerbook.

No one knows for sure, but the most reasonable explanation I've come across is that they are vents for letting heat out.

I like the look of the new iPhone.

To all those complaining about the RAM. Think Mac OS X on 1GB vs. Windows 7 on 1GB.

Its not the specs, it's how well the software runs. I bet you anything Apple's software runs as fast as the other guy's software but with half the ram. But wait, we already knew that, right?

Have you used Safari on the iPad with multiple tabs? If you haven't, then you can't really be objective about the RAM issue.

Increased RAM = increased performance..don't even try to argue about efficient coding or all of that crap.

Case and point: iPhone 3G vs 3GS. Were there any people arguing that 128MB was just fine and efficient programming would save all? Hell no, more RAM please!

I might pass on this thing if it turns out to be this lackluster hardware-wise. 256MB is so 2009 ;)

Implimenting multi-tasking and not upgrading the RAM to fully support it is kind of a fail.

I have no experience using Windows 7 with 1 GB of RAM, but OS X on 1 GB is an awful experience.

Apple has more leaks than BPs Oil Spill :X

I like the new design however, looks very sleek and away from the previously designed iPhones.
I like the slim factor and the fact its not rounded on the back.

Wish it was coming to verizon, =\ ah well.

It seems to me that the seams that are getting so much negative attention may be expansion joints to keep the metal bands from bowing outward slightly as they help dissipate the heat from the chips.

Right now....

AAPL - $262.06
4G Iphone - 268.44 MB

Still a bit above the stock price.

Yeah, or I could just decide for once if I REALLY need a camera and buy a stand alone one. Not very portable, I know...

In any case I'm stuck for more than one year more with the 3GS, and we don't have "early elegibility" here. Didn't yet check how much they would rip me off were I to upgrade on launch.
