Surprising that it has only 256MB of RAM, with the introduction of multitasking wouldn't it be a good time to increase the RAM? Jobs said that iPhone OS 4.0 would not run on 3G and 3GS would be able to run it, I assumed HD would run it FAST!

The thing needs to have 512MB of RAM.

32GB/64GB memory, not 16/32 again.

I hope they didn't underclock the A4 either.

Also anybody know of the GPU? I've read somewhere that it's still the same SGX535.

So basically other than A4 and the camera, it's pretty much the same.

256MB of RAM! I guess Apple need to have a reason to update it in the future - cue iPhone 4GS.

iPhone HDs FTW!

That one will probably have 8MP cam, 512MB RAM, SGX540, full speed A4, 64GB.

Ugh, so when will 512 Not be enough for you? Not everyone is chasing the latest hardware constantly.. So if they jump to 512... people will code for that and leave all those millions with a 2g, 3G or 3GS further down the line... You'll end up with a two tiered dev platform... Which is almost happening as it is.

I bet someone could code a browser that stores 100 pages... It just hasn't happened yet... Some people are never happy

Developers tend to aim for the lowest common denominator so they can maximise sales and minimise complaints about performance. However, Steve Jobs seems to think otherwise since he expects developers to take up these new features in OS4.0 but those features won't be on the 2G phone and some will be missing on 3G.

Why are we assuming it'll be called iPhone 4G?

I'm not assuming that. In fact I'm pretty sure it won't be called iPhone 4G. "4G" in the name, would indicate that it's a phone ready for the 4G network standard, which it isn't. That name is more likely for the model after this one, which will indeed be a 4G model.

Either it will be called iPhone HD, as some rumors have it, or it will simply be called iPhone 4. The next one, will then be iPhone 4G, so it'll be a bit like iPhone 3G, and then iPhone 3GS.

Whether 256MB is enough or not, one thing is for certain... Apple are being money grabbing tight ass's for not putting 512MB in there. The difference is cost must be tiny these days for that amount of memory.

It also concerns me greatly that Im seeing A LOT of people complain about their iPad's not being able to open >1 tab in safari without 'flushing'.. unless they activate virtual memory (by Jail Breaking I presume ?).

I have an iPad on Preorder, but am considering canceling if the multi tab issue is a genuine problem due to the 256MB of ram.

256mb. One word to explain

baaaahahahahahahhahaha!!!

EVO here we come. June 4th.

I dont think, I know. The lacking RAM is my only complaint about iPad. Open more then 4 tabs in Safari? They will reload and lose your place on the page. It sucks.

This isnt a demand for "More mega giga bullet points on the spec list" this is recognition that a premium product like the iPad or iPhone should not expose its working to the user. It should not run out of RAM and have to reload pages when it can just cache that to disk or simply have enough RAM that it isnt an issue.

Apple was cheap here and it shows.

Correct. Apple is just ridiculously stingy about the smallest things. It's like they're arrogant to the point where they make the product flawed just because they're so confident people will buy it no matter what.

256MB of RAM is unfortunate :-(

Given the increased resolution and multitasking, the thing will actually probably benchmark slightly worse than the 3GS...

Phazer

You guys realize though that this might not be the final build/product?

Stop complaining about the lack of RAM until the device is actually announced/released.

The low amount of RAM listed does bother me as well, as my iPad was frequently running out of RAM after running Safari with several tabs loaded, then switching out of it quickly to something like Mail. It would frequently force close the Mail app due to this. But, since I've enabled the disk caching that Apple actually has in place on the iPad already (but disabled by default...search for the thread on how to enable it on here), it's since stopped running out of RAM and doesn't have to refresh any of the tabs in Safari, no matter how many I have loaded. Maybe this caching is something they (Apple) are going to enable in OS 4.0, since it's already in 3.2 on the iPad (and 3.1 on the iPhone, for that matter) but disabled. If they enable disk caching, the 256Mb RAM might not be a problem.

Hey, I've tried searching for that thread with no luck, can you link?

Perhaps 512MB

The A4 chip in the iPad have 256MB in a second die inside the chip package. If the A4 in the iPhone is the same and there are other 256MB in a second chip then: 512MB !!!

Yeah. I'm sure that's why they're popping up all over the place. Apple is one of those companies that makes 200 versions of the exact same non-final build. That makes perfectly logical sense.

You're somehow in charge?

I agree with it being a controlled leak personally.

Also to ALL of those people complaining about the "sharp" edges. Personally i don't know ONE person who DOESN'T use a case with their iphone... and i know ALOT of people who use iphones. So all this complaining about it... get a case. Problam solved.

Why does Apple always do this stupid stuff and cripple their products.

How much more could another 256MB cost Apple. $3 maybe $4.

Could please listen to your customers for just once.

.
Not at all. Have you heard complaints from iPad users running out of memory?

All the time actually. Try loading a web page with a ton of pics on it, or loading more than 2-3 web pages... they always fail to load everything because of lack of memory.

The iPhone may be fine with 256MB of RAM(smaller res graphics), but the iPad could of used 512MB.

It's possible. I think the iPhone is going to have similar guts to the iPad which I think is great. I use my my iPad all the time and never get the low memory issue. The iPad is also SUPER fast imo. There's no way it's going to benchmark less than a 3GS as someone stated in this thread.

So many people on here are spec whores. People who don't understand software. For example: The iPad has a 1Ghz A4 and 256 mb ram and Engadget in their tests say its 10-30% faster then the Nexus One which uses a SnapDragon that is also 1Ghz and has 512 Ram... (http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/04/apples-a4-soc-pitted-against-qualcomm-snapdragon-comes-out-on/)

At the end of the day the iPhone will very likely DESTROY the competition, not only because of software, but because the Apple experience as a whole is just wayyy better. I mean from the second you walk in the door in an Apple store to every day use of your iPhone. Sure there are issues here and there, but overall it's top notch as Consumer Reports said today (http://www.9to5mac.com/apple_best_4_phones)

For those of you who use Android, it's great for your techies who can figure issues out on your own, but for the general public, it's not that great. Go to the Android forums and see all the issues people complain about. It's terrible.

And for the people who are like "oh, but the Evo has Sense on it" I've used Sense, its not all its cracked up to be. Check out this review as well, I agree on most points (http://whalesalad.com/blog/incredible-vs-nexus-one/)

At the end of the day I believe that most of what Apple does is right. It's CLEARLY working for their business. With $40 billion in the bank, they are KILLING it in the computer and phone market, and with the new iPhone, the front camera, and whatever else that thing does, I believe once again, it will rule the smartphone market.

So they can sell you the iPhone 5 with more RAM in a year. I'm tired of Apple deliberately crippling its products. I'll likely be the proud owner of whatever H/Palm phone is the successor to the Pre.

a little foolish

I think it was a little foolish for people to think that the new iphone would have more ram than the ipad. Besides most apps are good enough to use resources effieciently. We are talking about an Os that can run quite decently on the 128 that the 3g has.

in terms of processor, i mean we have to look at how much a larger battery (16% more right) plus a smaller screen is going to allow apple to clock the a4. We could get screwed over with apple just using the same clock speed as the current 3gs and pricing their models like that.

99 dollars for the 3gs and then 200 for upgrade to iphone hd. No real change in processing power but an upgrade to hd screen, new shell, etc. I hope not though....

Umm so I guess a lot of people on here can't read. . .

It's a PROTOTYPE! Completely not finished. It's an unconfirmed model. . . and you people are losing your minds. Just wait a few more weeks for WWDC.

With that said,

Maybe it's the Verizon CDMA version. . .;)
