So it looks like Apple is trying not just to top the Nexus One but to destroy it. We're only a little over one month away!

If I had to choose, and this is what people like about video on DSLR, I would choose shallow depth of field, which implies a wide aperture for the lens. Whether the video is 30p or 24p pales besides the quality of the lens and and the aperture.

The other issue is what codec it is using, which would have implications for post processing.

Well, yeah, I use my Canon 7D mostly and my Sony V1U sometimes. They both mix together quite well.

But when I'm at the grocery store and my daughter does something cute I don't have those. I just use my iPhone.

Anything that lets that iPhone footage mix better with my regular home movies is welcome.

It's so easy to pump a product by just adding two letters as a feature - HD. Too bad it just means a resolution standard and doesn't include a word about actual visual quality. And I don't mean just Apple doing this.

agreed. I never really complained about no video recording in the previous iPhone, but it's something I use all the time now due to its convenience. So, HD video would be a nice bonus to have.

BTW Apple is probably not going to put in an HD Video recorder unless it looks great. The rumors that it that the next iPhone has a 5 Megapixel camera. That may sound kind of weak because other phones are coming out with 8 megapixel cameras. Chances are though, the iPhone will have a much better lens than the competitors. According to the rumors we've seen.

HD doesn't require an imager with much more than 2 MP. More pixels generally means more noise (smaller photosites on the imager) so maybe 5Mp is a good compromise. We will have to see

Ideally, I would like to see a larger imager at 5 Mp and a wide maximum aperture of f2.8 in a 28mm equivalent lens. This would be better for landscapes and portraiture and telephoto use would be weak anyway without some sort of stabilization. Digital processing would allow some telephoto, albeit at a cost of resolution, a tradeoff that I personally would find acceptable.

HD Recording? NO! I hope Apple will not implement this.

Then it'll be absolutely okay for me as long as the camera isn't that much of a battery sucker or increases the iPhone's price a lot ;)

If it wasn't implemented, I'm sure you'd be one of the first to complain about it having outdated technology. I absolutely can't think of them implementing ANY new feature without them getting negative criticism for doing so. Everyone just likes to complain.

You are going to need a pile of memory to support HD recording. Low Quality HD (5Mbps) takes about 2~3 GB per hour. High quality (24Mbps) takes about 11 GB per hour.

That's ok for a cloud-connected 64GB iP*. Shoot 2-3 hours of HD, do a cursory edit, and upload it to computer or website.

Any hope of an HD camera plug/dongle for devices lacking such a camera? Since the iPad camera connection kit is almost there why not a similar tiny plug with a video camera and app to match?

Nexus One is already topped by HTC Droid Incredible. The question is will 4G iPhone be better than Incredible, who knows for now.

Jobs did say an A+ update after all.

4G as in fourth generation since that's all we know about it. That's an accurate temporary name for it.

1st generation iPhone was the iPhone (it wasn't called 2G)
2nd generation was iPhone 3G
3rd generation was iPhone 3GS
4th generation is temporarily "4G"

Apple has to change it to something else. Referring it to network generation (2G:Edge, 3G:3G) is stupid because we aren't upgrading the network every year and if Apple intends to refresh iPhone every year, they need to break off from that. Using generations makes more sense.

iPhone 3GHD?

iPhone 3GHD?

I personally doubt that they'd include so many letters in it. 3GS seems a little much in my opinion too though. I think it might be just iPhone, iPhone HD, iPhone 4, or maybe iPhone G4.

iPhone 3GHD?

Which sounds inferior to 3GS in my opinion and annoying as well.

Yo, you got iPhone 3G? 3GS? 3GHD?
Yo, you got iPhone 3G or 4G? It's simple and straight to the point.

I honestly doubt G4. There's going to be many people mocking it including the PPC G4 chip in this forum. sighs.

Can't wait till this is released to see how it compares to the Evo!! I'm kinda sold on the Evo already and now Apple has to try to win me back.

I was speaking of 5 Megapixels for the still camera. Anyway though, I agree.

what does it mean in the iPhone OS 4 slide where it says "Carrier Information"? Does anyone else think that might refer to cellular carriers? As in, more than one? As in...the V-word? :)

You do realize that iPhone is selling in multiple markets around the world and a lot of them are not carrier exclusive?

No!? I even think the iPhone 3Gs camera is okay. It's great for video and okay for pictures as well.

HD Recording? NO! I hope Apple will not implement this. I can't imagine the quality to be any good at all.

Have you seen the quality of video on the 3GS? It looks pretty damn good, especially for a cell phone. I'd go as far as saying it's probably better than most other cell phone video recordings. I can't imagine Apple would implement HD video recording and it suck.

Wonder what the frame rate will be at 720p...?

The 4G will be my first iPhone.

if it's truly 720p then it has to be 23.97, 24, 29.97, 30 ...
who would buy it if it was something low like 12/15 fps? It would be essentially useless.

If they truly have real 720p ( 1280x720 ) I'll be impressed. I have this weird feeling it will be 920x640 native that is carried as 720p
( similar to the way the HDV codec does 1080i )

What editor are you using? Chances are that if it doesn't have a convertor, that there are third party plugins available. I do agree that it would be nice if Apple supported both.

I'm sure he's aware it will be something ranging from 24 to 30 fps (and not something like 15fps). But it would be good to know exactly which it would be for certain people who might not want to mix video from different sources with different frame rates, which could be a problem.

Final Cut Pro, but the format isn't the problem. I can use current iPhone videos just fine if I wanted to.

It's just that cramming 30 fps footage into my 24 fps timelines isn't always beautiful, depending on what's happening in the image. I can make it work but it'd be nice if I didn't have to "make it" work.

Besides, 24 fps footage would take up less memory on an iPhone than 30 fps, so you'd get longer recording times. Another reason to choose it if it's an option.
