But it doesn't cut anything off of a standard 16:9 video. The only time the notch affects any video content is if you zoom IN on 16:9 content, at which point you're also cutting off the top and bottom of the image.

There really seems to be a lot of confusion about how aspect ratios work. The old phones were 16:9 and a notch would have interfered with video. The X is 19.5:9 and the notch doesn't extend past the side bars that would always be present anyway.
You are still not going to have a full screen experience if you don't zoom in.

It's not just about the glass - it's about the glass & the OLED (or LCD). Some of these sensors are basically cameras, so there needs to be an aperture to capture light. How's the aperture going to get all the light bouncing off the desired object (e.g. the face) if it's partially or entirely obscured by OLED/LCD electronics

Well, the sensor suite in Face ID (The Notch) has a layer of glass. It is not part of the display glass. It is the same glass that covers the camera lenses on the back. Very different composition than the display glass.

IMO, Apple and Corning are very close to a comparable display glass. Face ID always felt like a last minute decesion. I think late 2019 will be the end of Face ID. If not, I guess I buy the last possible 8+ and use it until it’s toast. :apple:

Logic is refreshing in these forums.

All that means is: Most of youtube videos will play fine, and some Tv shows on netflix.

99%+ of online and TV content is 16:9 or smaller.

But most movies from over the years with widescreen cinema, will not look good on the ipx. Either the notch will obstruct the display, or you have to deal with large borders.

Most movies from the last few day decades are 1.85 or 2.35 ratios. The 1.85 ratio is not affected by the notch. The 2.35 ratio is indeed constrained in size by the notch, but that's pretty misleading because the X still has a 'longer' display than all previous iPhones and 2.35 movies will have smaller top/bottom borders when displaying 2.35 content--IOW, you're still able to use more of the X screen when watching 2.35 content than on any previous iPhone.

The notch is not negatively affecting the vast majority of videos that people are watching on their phones.

Trying to explain this to a "notch hater" is an exercise in futility. It's the mere existence of the notch that irritates them.
It doesn't matter if it does or doesn't affect usage. The fact that it's there is all they focus on.

Many films use cinemascope/2.35:1, and even more so now than ever. This will be affected by the notch. Don't get me wrong, as I normally don't view films on my mobile device. But, this affects every day use to ME at least. I have OCD with these kind of things. I don't want to see something obstructing my display when I zoom in on a picture, watching videos, or just using the phone to text. Some say they don't notice it, but it sticks out like bird s*** on a black shoe to me.

I pray that manufacturers don't all jump on this horrible design. It saddens me that Asus already has.

By 2019 apple will figure out how to put cameras underneed the display. I can’t wait.
I'd love to bet with you on that. But it would be unfair to you.

What if.. 2019 iPhones dont have front facing cameras?
No more selfies? Fat chance. Maybe if they put displays on both sides of the phone, so you can use the 'rear' camera for selfies.

I am no engineer, but there are patents for putting the tech behind the screen. It will become reality eventually, just not sure on 2019. No big deal to me either way.
Sure, and there will be technology to take pictures of something behind a wall.

One plus 6 is already confirmed to have an iPhone X like Notch so we're out of luck with most Android OEMS.
It's time for Samsung to shine with originality I guess.

I feel like it will be only Google and Samsung that really innovate Android in the upcoming future. Lg brings awesome hardware such as quad DAC's, but the general public don't appreciate those things. I personally have been using nexus and pixel devices for the last couple of years, and I would love if Google and Samsung partnered up for the next Pixel device.

Working transparent display has already been demonstrated years ago. Just put sensors behind this display technology then make the portion of the display opaque when sensors need to be used. We already have physical home button in screen along with fingerprint so camera is next. No need for fugly low tech notch.
Yes. You have a screen that can go transparent. Put the notch devices behind that, then make just that section transparent when needed. A notch you can turn on and off! Being Apple, they could get artistic and make the "notch" magically slide down from the top of the screen as needed, then slide back up when done. So you get a notch for Face ID, camera, but no notch during videos and apps. There's still a tech problem since those displays are not utterly transparent so having a high quality camera behind it is problematic..

Equally as low tech as the notch is a pop-up camera sensor and this is the company that Apple copied the notch from.

Apple didn't "copy" the notch. The notch is inevitable if you want a full screen experience while retaining front facing cameras and sensors. Pop-up cameras seem like they introduce additional complexities for no real benefit.

As technology advances, they could probably reduce the notch by about 25-30% from what it is now. But, to get rid of it altogether is impossible unless you're OK with more bezel. I personally like how the screen is nearly uniformly edge to edge, except for the notch. Looks better than the Galaxy or Pixel phones in my opinion.

It's not the notch, but the EARS to its left and right that everyone is upset about. If the ears were always black, people would merely say "they still have a bezel along the top, it's just a partly software one, look how clever they put status info up there. Sure, a slight bezel complaint, but nothing like the "notch" complaints we have now.

I do wonder why they don't have an option to switch off and on that allows them to keep their screen real estate for status indicators and allows users to choose to either use the extra scree real estate if an app is designed to use it, or to skip it and make the screen end just below the bezels, preserving the status indicators and leaving the screen symmetrical.

Some people might want the extra space for stuff like wallpapers and home screens and some might not.

Just like they did with the fingerprint sensor? ..

It's already been openly stated that Craig Federighi interviewed with John Gruber that touch ID was experimented with under the display, but they never had full intentions of using it as the primary, where they wanted Face ID as their primary choice once it was operating as intended. Face ID was always there primary goal over touch ID under the display. Touch ID under the display was Plan B.

I wonder if everyone on here who supports and claims to like the notch, will be refusing to buy the 2019 onwards iPhones as they no longer have this feature...?! ;-)
i will buy it but to be honest i actually like the notch it gives the iPhone some personality. still no notch would better. i don't think it will happen by 2019, maybe 2020

Why do u think Apple is trending toward a notchless X? Because I'm not alone.
We understand technology evolves forever. You’re confusing a notchless iPhone with the ultimate experience. 10 years from now, the notchless iPhone will be old news too. I love my X...today.

You “waiters” will never get the ultimate device and will end up waiting forever.

Ok, so let's say they get rid of the notch*. Aren't people now going to complain that the phone has a bad design because they keep accidentally holding it upside-down (especially when taking calls)? I mean, people say that the Siri Remote is bad because of the fact that it's hard to tell which side is the touchpad and which side is the bottom, so why wouldn't people complain about something similar with a notch-less iPhone?

I don't know how Apple would truly solve that problem (outside of making feedback to the back, which people may also say that it's either a stupid idea, is ugly, it's redundant if they put a case on it, or some combination of the three).

Maybe I'm overthinking things, so I'm probably wrong, but I would like to know as to how Apple could possibly solve this.

* Full disclosure, I'm not justifying the notch, but then again, I don't care too much about it.

I’m curious if the notch will indeed be slimmer, but I am more concerned with improvements to FaceID and the OLED screen issues. Also, what will actually be offered on the LCD version vs the OLED models.

I’m sitting good right now. I hedged my bets with getting the 8+. I can upgrade this year through Verizon or I can just wait until 2019 if I’m not compelled by the 2018 releases. The 8+ will carry me through either way.

So they replaced an already working and fully baked solution that was also globally used for NFC payments for a new "amateurish" technology that will take a long time to improve and to be as reliable as Touch ID because they never had the intention of adding under the display fingerprint just like they tested? Seems about right...
