I don't find the notch ridiculous; I just think it's a good compromise with the available tech. I think the notch is better than the alternative of not using the space at all and making the screen smaller. If they did that, I would still have my 7 Plus.
I still think the right option would be the best.

It would still look like an iPhone.

Face it, the front facing sensors need a bezel, Apple chose to make their bezel a notch and make the otherwise wasted space next to the sensors useful by wrapping the screen up there. I'm fairly ambivalent about it, but will say that the S9 looks pretty clean in comparison.

If it were my choice, I would push the crap out of the engineers to reduce the vertical footprint of all of the front sensors and just have the thinnest full width bezel possible and skip the notch as it's more distracting than a thin clean bezel in my opinion.

But Apple sometimes clings to stupid looking designs, like the ear pods ;)

It does? Where?

Or are we now stooping so low as to call the screen border a bezel?
If you want to call the bezel a border, sure....
I'd take a chin and forehead over it all day, everyday, just so I wouldn't have the stupid, obtrusive notch. Imagine if your TV, laptop, and every display you own, had a notch? NO THANKS :apple:!

So you'd rather have a larger phone with bezels top and bottom as opposed to a smaller phone with a notch?

That's cool and your personal preference BUT that's not what we were discussing now is it? You can attempt to deflect away from your original statement if you want but the S9 you just posed as proof HAS bezels where the X does not..

Maybe in the process of ditching the notch they can find some way to put the camera under the display, perhaps in the center of the phone. That way when you're doing a video chat – and looking at the screen – you're not looking slightly away from the camera.

Wasn't there (maybe a) patent filing a few years ago about packing regular screen pixels with a tiny "camera" pixel- a kind of RGBC pixel arrangement (where C is camera)? Each micro camera "pixel" would be relatively weak as a camera on it's own but then the software combines up to all of them to capture the front-facing image. I could swear I saw such a patent filing- I think referenced on this very site, maybe 2+ years ago.

Yes, those are corners, as well as the two on the right side. Holding the content going to all four corners is a nice.
But then you get like 50% of the left corner cut so you won't be having a full experience like this.

I wonder if everyone on here who supports and claims to like the notch, will be refusing to buy the 2019 onwards iPhones as they no longer have this feature...?! ;-)

And the 20 or so copycat android phones will do the same no doubt...

It doesn't take away from the experience at all in use. From a picture, yea you can point it out, but you don't notice it while using.
Since I haven't used it for playing games I can't comment on it if it's noticable or not.

I don't care for samsung phones sadly, haven't owned one in MANY years. Never deflected the topic, simply stated that the iphone x has a bezel around the whole display, regardless if you want to call it something different or not, its still a bezel. That is what you call the material that is used to hold a display in place: a Bezel.

So in 2020 every phone looks exactly alike

Very similar, yes. There will be slight differences as Apple tends to lean towards a more friendly design while Android leans to a more robotic design, but you’re point is correct. It will all come down to software, security, privacy, apps, ecosystem, and support. I think Apple has a major leg up here.

In that case only if it was an Apple branded TV* it would look totally fine. If it was another TV Brand it would look totally ridiculous /s

They can probably do it now if they wanted to, Apple has Billions available for R&D.... its a matter of how far they want to push it down the roadmap, they have to save features for future releases to entice people to upgrade.

It wouldn't shock me if there was a prototype laying around their secret lab with faceid working under the screen as we speak.
Probably Apple could do have done it five years ago, with their bazillions of dollars. But there is more to designing a phone than building a working prototype. You have to make something that can be manufactured in the tens of millions at a price that people can buy. Would you rather Apple release a $10,000 phone this year with FaceID under the display, or wait a couple of years until they get it down to a grand?

With Apple's money they can do anything. They could take over the automotive industry with an electric SUV that does 0-60 in 1.2 seconds and then collapses into the size and weight of a Mac Mini. And then operates as a Mac Mini, with every legacy port built in, with holographic haptic keyboard and 8K virtual display beamed directly to your eyeballs, that is faster than anything on the market with it's quantum G5 processor. What they can't do is manufacture it this year for $499. Or $49,999.

Then the S9 you posted has bezels as well on the sides using your bezel analogy, the S9's side bezels are just at the end of the curved screen. So using your bezel analogy, they both have side bezels and the S9 has much larger top and bottom bezels not to mention it's physically a larger phone.

So ironic how that works, right?! Just like before there were Plus model phones, and how bigger phones were hideous, and ugly. Then look who's going for a 6.1" as well as a 6.5" phone now?!

Have you ever handled the S9 in person? Galaxy Edge phones don't have side bezels you touch the screen and the frame not a bezel.

Yet still has more screen estate than the Iphone X though....AND it doesn't have any possible way to block content on its display, as there is no notch.
