It's as though Apple knew how much people would dislike the notch, thereby congratulating themselves when new tech beneath the screen enables them to remove it.

How could you tell which side is the top and bottom? Maybe they will just have the screen auto rotate

A slightly smaller notch would not make me upgrade from the current X as the notch does not bother me that much. No notch at all would be cool but again its not a big deal to me. In some ways it sets it apart from other phones as it has its own unique look.

An unnamed industry source added that Apple has decided to remove the notch "from 2019 models," suggesting the third-generation iPhone X could be the first model with a truly full-screen design.

I wasn't in the room but I would think Apple planned for the notch to always be a temporary design workaround. I don't mind the notch but it's not aesthetically pure, something Apple likes to be. But just as a Corolla can't drive though a well reinforced concrete wall, Apple has to design with the available technology. Right not that is either a notch or a bezel. It chose the notch. But surely the goal is to keep researching to the point they don't have to make that decision. If that tech will be ready in 2019 perfect timing because that's when I plan to update my phone.

Personally I don’t like the notch. What I do like is the little bit of extra screen real estate it gives us to accommodate what would normally be the status bar.

The more they shrink it, the more of that we get. Which is just fine with me. So in a way I do like the notch, just kind of in reverse :D

Exactly, and I'm surprised more people don't understand this. There is no current solution where there isn't a notch, there's only a solution where the notch/bezel extends the whole width of the screen. Since that option results in less screen area available and requires the time/carrier/battery info to slide down into the main part of the screen, I greatly prefer the notch design.

sounds TOP NOTCH

I wonder if everyone on here who supports and claims to like the notch, will be refusing to buy the 2019 onwards iPhones as they no longer have this feature...?! ;-)

I think you're missing the point.

In 2017/2018, the option is either a notch or a bezel. Some people prefer to have the notch and it's extra screen real estate rather than a bezel.

Given the option of a phone with a notch and no bezel, or a phone with no notch AND no bezel, of course people would prefer the latter.

Unfortunately right now we don't have that option, all we have to choose from is a notch or a bezel.

"This is iMagical! I couldn't go back to the Notch. I never really liked it anyway." - Every iPhone X/ Notch lover right now.

What if.. 2019 iPhones dont have front facing cameras?

Hold a mirror in the other hand, so you can do your selfies and animoji tricks???

Then again, "introducing the iMirror, only $149" Hmmmm.

Come to think of it: all those guys who frequently post a very self-centered "why don't they just..." concept that is then replied with "because the rest of the world is not you"-type responses are probably incredible marketing opportunities for many iMirrors. Apple's new iMirror: a bigger-than-iPhone product at last!!! ;)

no chance they are changing the notch this year. they won't make devs change the apps again. maybe next year, definitely not this year

The notch, and smaller notch, and no notch all create completely different requirements for software design. The App Store is already a mess with Apps that have not been properly updated because developers are greedy and lazy and Apple doesn't enforce anything with any real gusto.

When Apple went with the notch, I thought for sure that meant an investment of at least 2-3 years in this design. It takes that long for the software world to come around.

A major change every 12 months to the iPhone UI does not benefit anyone.

It benefits Apple. Existing notch will be beat down as the fat notch once the smaller notch phone comes out. Then, the smaller notch will be beat down as "antiquated" and <insert all notch hate punches ever thrown> when the notch-less phone rolls out.

Buy a new iPhone with (fat) notch. Buy a new iPhone with "thinner" notch. Buy a new iPhone with no notch. "But who makes the most profitable smart phone?" Hoooray!
