I seriously hope this isn't true... I hve been living with a cracked screen on my iP4 for months, holding off for the new one... I hope I dont regret it.

My honest opinion about if it's going to be released or not:

I DON'T KNOW

However, if there's to be an update it will be something like the processor/back camera/battery/ram/capacity.

Apple has long term contracts with manufacturers for production of the display, processor etc... so even the processor change is quite uncertain. I believe more that there will be an upgrade in the back camera/flash, battery and/or memory capacity than anything else. It's unlikely that we will see a new design, and honestly, isn't this design perfect yet?=P It's my favourite so far in all mobile phones.

I have to admit that i don't have money issues, but i always try to save up as much money i can. I live in portugal, and an iPhone 4 without contract, costs 589.90€. I pay 15€ each month for unlimited voice, and message but doesn't include data plan. so i end up paying extra 5.45€ for 150mb per month.

So if the iPhone 4 ends up in 500€ after the new (iPhone 5 being released with "minor" upgrades) i will buy the iPhone 4 instead to save some money. That's why i will wait until the iPhone 5 gets released to see for myself the upgrades instead of relying in rumors.

Still i think the upgrade won't be that much of a major upgrade like many think about the dual core processor but i could be wrong. Every app runs beautifully on iPhone although i would like better speeds processing the pictures taken with hisptamatic :D

Still, I would rather get a bigger lens sensor in the camera. I don't care about being 5 or 8 megapixel, 5 Megapixel with better sensor and flash would be the best upgrade for me, since it's my only camera and i don't want to buy a compact or professional camera because i think it's boring to bring with me more than 1 device. And i always tend to forget to bring extra devices with me.

Sorry about the english.

Solid

This may solidify my confidence in buying the iPhone 4 with Verizon. It makes my decision an easier one. However, I can see how a lot of people will be disagreeing with all of these notions about the smartphone competition and yearly updates.

I find it hard to believe. The competition is heating up quickly and Apple will be a fool not to reposnd accordingly. Since AT&T lost exclusivity they'll be pulling all stops and releasing the best Android phones to compete with Verizon. For proof look no further then Moto Atrix which handily beats iPhone 4 in just about evey category.

Realistically, though, if Apple were to just release new software the iPhone 4 would be immediately competitive again. Also, competition is a relative term. Certainly they could increase the storage capacity, the camera capacity, and so forth, but those things are always going to be improved by Android. It's a race Apple could never hope to win.

Apple would be wise to focus on the software and to keep the platform uniform as best they can - unlike most Android devices that are stuck on older versions of the OS. It's sort of like Windows PCs several years ago. Apple never tried to compete on hardware (not the high end hardware, anyway) but made up for it with a more consistent OS and better user experience. Sounds more or less like their iPhone/iPad strategy.

Without knowing anything special or having any proof I would be inclined to believe this rumor. The Verizon iPhone launch doesn't make all that much sense if they are just going to release a new phone - it seems like a PR nightmare with a lot of angry Verizon users that waited years only to buy a device that is old after only 5 months.

As others have pointed out, though, the OP never came back. Bottom line is no one really knows. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Woz came to me in a dream as a bearded, bespectacled centaur. He had a shiny white polycarbonate bow and a quiver full of CNC-milled aluminum arrows. I was knee-deep fly-fishing for meatballs in a river of pomodoro sauce when I heard him approach.

He spoke with a bellow that was both geeky and frightening. "YOU THERE, STANDING IN THE RIVER. DO YOU KNOW OF THE IPHONE?"

"Of course, I've owned one of each," I said.

"WELL THERE WILL BE A NEW ONE THIS SUMMER, AS WITH ALL SUMMERS BEFORE. GO FORTH AND SHARE THE WORD WITH THE BELIEVERS."

"Thanks, Mr. Woz," I said, "I'll do that." And then I hooked a nice 5-lb ground veal meatball.

So, I don't think this was a random premonition. Can we put this on page 1 please?

This is not getting nearly enough attention.

I see your point here, but I see several possibilities. Many have disagreed with the fact the iPhone 5 (with drastic changes) won't appear this year. However, what's stopping Apple making a 4S? It wouldn't annoy the Verizon users (and offer something to 3GS/iPhone4 users) and gives Apple time to get the iPhone 5 ready for 2012. The 4S could include minor upgrades that make iOS5 run at its best as how could Apple top a retina screen, 5MP camera and many other things in introduced in the 4.

The only other thing is only a minority would be annoyed if a redesigned iPhone 5 appeared this year. Verizon users should be grateful one of the best smartphones is not available on their network. Then the iPhone 6 (or 5S) in 2012 could pull both phones together. It would make financial sense to have a universal chip and one phone for all networks. 4G by then should be growing.

My theory on a 4S (with minor bumps in upgrades) and a white option will tie people over until a big upgrade on the 2012 iPhone 5 is sticking for now until I've heard otherwise :).

There is a very simple reason why there will be an iPhone 5 this year.....

People will buy it.

There will be no HARDWARE changes this year, they are putting all their effort into the new IOS...

Is it that complicated to understand? Apple believe, that the hardware in the IP4 is good for another year and with the Verizon iPhone just coming out, they will no refresh this year, the white iPhone 4 will come out, and the new IOS will push the iPhone.

I really don’t know why you’re all having trouble with this? Did you think that Apple were going to change the iPhone for everyone accept Verizon? So have two different iPhone models? (3 if you include the 3GS) or did you think they were going to change that in June too?

7 options:

1) New iPhone 5 – just non-verizon - not going to happen, two iPhone models, phones out of sync
2) New iPhone 5 - Verizon + AT&T integrated version - not going to happen – Why do months of development on Verizon iP4 to only sell it for a couple of months?
3) New iPhone 5 - Two new models for Verizon and AT&T - not going to happen – Why do months of development on Verizon iP4 to only sell it for a couple of months?
4) Create a iP4 ‘S’ – For AT&T models - Not going to happen – Verizon version will be out of sync
5) Create a iP4 ‘S’ - Verizon + AT&T integrated version - not going to happen – Why do months of development on Verizon iP4 to only sell it for a couple of months?
6) Create a iP4 ‘S’ - Two new models for Verizon and AT&T - not going to happen – Why do months of development on Verizon iP4 to only sell it for a couple of months?
7) Keep models the same and bring out killer IOS upgrades, release white iPhone and bring out an integrated Verizon and AT&T iPhone 5 next year.

7 Options?

So you're now giving us 7 different options for what may or may not happen? I though you had proof of what definatley will happen?

Mark my words, there will be a new iPhone this summer, be it either the iPhone 5 (large upgrade) or a sort of iphone 4s (minor upgrades)

I look forward to coming back here in june/july and having a good laugh at this thread.

*snip*

LOL.

This thread is a fail. Of course Apple aren't going to bring out a new phone. I mean competition from dual core powered phones with 4" screens and 8mp cameras isn't competition at all. And a phone that was released in June 2010 is obviously going to be able to keep up with all new handsets until June 2012.

And why are you so certain that a new Verizon iPhone cannot come out with the new AT&T phone? Just because people just bought one doesn't mean that Apple can't provide minor updates for the handset.

And have you even considered that the mythical white iPhone 4 may just come out in June alongside the new 4S?

Ignorance is bliss.

Okay, so first you said you had proof and now you are just listing things that might happen (which have been established by most people on this forum anyways).

Verizon was not the first carrier that got hands on the iPhone during a mid-cycle.

Ahh this has been a nice 5 page read over lunchtime

The Big Booney, assuming your initial statement of working at an Apple Store in Brighton is correct, then you above anyone is aware how little the Verizon iPhone means on a global basis.

You also clearly have no understanding on the RnD that went into the verizon iphone...which basically = Glue CDMA radio chip to circuit board + Write a lot of code that allows iOS to operate CDMA radio chip.

Now lets see...how much work is going to be involved, gluing a cdma radio chip into an 'iphone 5' and utilising all the coding in ios, that you've already done...Oh thats right ABSOLUTE BUTTONS, putting tech you've already invented into something new really isn't an issue. Just because it happens that you've shoved it into your current phone to boost sales on another network, doesn't mean YOU HAVEN'T done the pre thinking about the next model.

Next on the agenda is the global sales, do you know anyone outside of kansas that actually gives two hoots about the verizon launch? I don't...i even asked Dorothy...and she is IN Kansas and doesn't care. An upgraded iPhone has to happen this year, otherwise your going to have a drove of not very happy, not very loyal 3GS customers flouncing off to buy the nearest Galaxy S...because their 3GS is at this point quite literally falling to bits. (seriously in some ways i wish i still had my original iphone it was way way way sturdier than my 3GS that has hairline fractures all over it.)

So basically, you are either so low down in your companies foodchain, that you haven't got a grip on reality...or your spouting utter BS. Either way come June your going to need a new username on this forum...and you'd better be good at hiding your tracks.

Apple sell phones in places other than the U.S you know.

Apple sell phones in places other than the U.S you know.

This is my point exactly, there are millions of customers outside of the U.S.
It is highly likely that there will be a new phone out this summer, the specs etc is to be debated of course for now. Also not forgetting that I currently have a 3GS and waiting patiently for this summer :D lol

Wow, there seems to be a lot of venom and aggression directed toward the OP for what seems like a reasonable opinion/theory. Honestly, has anyone provided any facts as to why there will be a new iPhone model released this year, or is it all just speculation?

I've read most of the counter-arguments: 3GS users, maintaining a competitive advantage, apple's yearly cycle, etc, and none of those sound like solid proof to me. Let's face it, the iPhone 4 is still selling well and is about to be released one of the largest carriers in the US. I think there are still plenty of sales to be made.

Apple isn't all that concerned if you are using an older device or feel like you deserve a new model this year. There will be brand new iPhone 4s available (in two colors!) for you to pick up.

Besides, most of the rumored specs point to a new model next year anyway - cutting edge CPU/GPU, NFC, LTE, redesigned hardware. I think people should stop getting so pissed off when someone suggests that they could skip a hardware update this year and realize it may make sense for Apple to focus on updating iOS.

He should know that. He supposedly works in the Apple Store in Brighton, UK.

That was in his previous dream; in this one he "works for the company that does a lot of work for Apple"!

It appears in this dream he's been promoted to some pretty senior position as well, since he is being personally informed about the upcoming hardware updates :D:D

I've been informed that there will be no hardware updates to the iPhone this year and the iPhone 5 will launch in the summer of 2012.

It actually would make a lot of sense to skip the hardware changes and focus on the software. The only reason everyone is disagreeing is because humans have a tendency to hate change. Just because the product cycle hasn't changed in 4 years does not mean it will continue this way forever.

I'm still saying that I know that there will be no new hardware.

Stop being retarded

Thank you, someone with some intelligence....

Few and far between on here.

Apple has shareholders to answer to. These shareholders are expecting profits to exceed last years profits. There fore Apple is almost expected to release a new phone.
