why is everyone ordering their intel mac instead of just going to the store and buying it? i just went to the apple store tonight and picked up mine and it's up and running. i'm just going to add some ram and it will be great.

why? Because there are only apple stores in the big cities moron. Do you think everyone lives in a big City? I don't have the time to drive 4 hours to chicago or 3 hours to Indy.

Once I get out of work tonight, I am going over to my Father's. His new imac 2.0 with 2GB ram and the 256MB graphics card will be in today. I can run some tests if anyone wants me to.

I spent most of last night setting up my new 20" iMac, transfering all my stuff off my PowerBook. It was my first experience with the Migration Assistant/Firewire Target Disk Mode. I was reasonably impressed. Tonight I'll set about installing software and moving over preferences/settings.

So far I'm pretty impressed with the performance. Front Row is a nice perk, as is the iSight. I've only got the stock 512MB now (that'll change soon enough), but everything is smooth and responsive (1080 HD trailers never looked to good!!). I'll run Xbench tonight...

Has anyone put together a set of standard real-world benchmarks suitable for the new iMac? Something like the Photoshop test? Just wondering...

I was right.... My iMac shipped last night while I was asleep (or maybe while I was "getting intimate" with my girlfriend). Anyway, I should have it Monday.

well fedex just updated my tracking, and now it's saying jan. 25th. kinda disappointing to have to wait another day, but at least it'll be worth the wait. it left shanghai the morning

I live within driving distance of 5 Apple Stores. One is 15 min from where I work, another is 15 min from where I live. The reason I ordered online is because you can only get stock systems at the stores. They can upgrade the RAM but not the x1600 card to 256 VRAM.

Hello-

I didn't realize that there weren't many apple stores around. i have 2 w/ in about 45 mins from me. I can also understand if you are upgrading the graphics card and stuff.

Thanks to the people that were nice and explained to me why they just didn't go to the store and get one. And as for the guy that called me a moron well I won't even go there. Grow up !

Hahaha, your iMac is jealous and is coming to get yah, watch out! :D

My Apple order status now says shipped February 17th!

They pushed it back even further, damn.

Ordered January 12th.

My ship date is Jan 24, Delivery is Jan 31. Do the ship dates vary by location? I ordered on the 17th but a number of people who ordered earlier than me have later dates than I do. How does the queue system work? Is preference given in any way?...i.e. to previous customers, new customers, markets, etc.?

I just got off the phone to Apple after they pushed my order back about a week. They didn't offer me any free RAM ;) :( (but I guess I'll live...). They did however say that orders are ALL shipped on a first come first served basis, I don't believe that because of what I read on here but you have to accept what they say! I guess I'll just hope they do ship quite soon :D

I don't believe that either. For one thing even if you ordered on the day of the keynote but wanted a 500GB drive you are definitely going to be waiting longer than someone who orders today with a 250GB drive. They aren't going to hold back thousands of orders just because the person who ordered first wanted something they don't have in stock.

Secondly, they must ship these things in big palettes of hundreds of machines. If your order is the first going on to a new palette I suspect they'll delay your shipment until they get enough orders to fill or nearly fill the palette.

Finally, I know from previous discussions with others on this forum that when I ordered an identical iMac literally weeks after they did mine arrived first. As mine arrived a day before and they seemed to be on the same shipment from Shanghai to France this would support the theory that his order was delayed until they had a decent number of machines to ship in bulk.

Memory upgrade

Just received my 1 gig chip from Crucial for my 20" dual core. What a difference! The system is much faster with the 1.5 gig. I'd say the stock 512 meg is most definitely not enough. It was too sluggish with the 512.

Got mine :)

Ok, to recap...

I ordered my 20" iMac on the 14th, and got a "Should be shipped by the 24th" status message.

It *actually* shipped the 18th, from Shanghai. Traveling by way of Anchorage, AK and Indianapolis, IN, I got it TODAY from FedEx. I left the RAM alone (have a 1Gig stick on its way separately), but did bump up the video card, since I can't change that later.

So far, it's incredibly quiet to me. Keep in mind I'm upgrading from a Wind Tunnel G4, but still! The native apps are pretty snappy, but I can tell it's hurting for that extra RAM.

The mouse has *got* to go (back to the cruddy Logitech for me, I guess) even though I do like the scrolly thingamabob. The "right click" is just too much of a pain to activate, and you can't right-and left-click at the same time (World of Warcraft swimming is much easier if you hold down both)

The only frustrating thing to me, long term, is that I can't Migrate over my old machine's info, since my startup disk is a Slave, not Master. :/ I didn't realize that only the Master disk can be set to Target. Alas. I've dragged over some things by brute force (Ethernet), but I know that's nothing like synching them with the Migrate app. I've got a lot of work to do, re-installing things and resetting prefs. Oh well.

Lovely machine (visually), super crisp and bright screen, and a pretty nice set of built-in apps. I'm a happy camper. :)

They can't ship on a first come first served basis.

I ordered my iMac on January 12th. My buddy ordered 4 hours after me the same day. We ordered the exact same setup: 20", 1GB RAM, 256MB VRAM, 250GB HD.

Mine has been pushed back from January 20th to February 17th!
His has been pushed back from January 20th to January 25th.

I received an E-mail from Apple delaying it because of higher demand than anticipated, he didn't.

I don't get it

I will call them monday (not that it's going to help).

I'm off to FedEx this morning by 9am CT to pick up my iMac!! I'll post a message later when I get it all set up. i'll run a few tests too, just to see what this baby can do

Don't use auto migrate...!

all you getting new machines - I just did and I STRONGLY suggest you NOT use the auto migration feature.I did and machne just crawled.
I then backed up my personal files, did a fresh install and copied over my files .
Everything (including rosetta apps) works MUCH better.
So, you have been advised (see post on https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/174513/)

So, max out the ram (i'm going to 1.5G) and do a fresh install

Picked up my iMac 20inch. Looks BEAUTIFUL! The Screen is so much brighter than even my Dell 2005FPW was. It's great. I'm copying my music and pics and apps via my ipod. Once I have something there, I can test a few things out. Any ideas?

First impressions-even with just 512MB RAM. The iMac seems to fly. Of course, I don't have a gillion programs open, but system DOES feel more responsive than my Dual Core 2ghz G5 PowerMac. Internet browsing is WAY faster

Well, add me to the list...I just ordered a 17 incher. Should ship from Amazon on Monday. They have a $125 rebate on it right now, works out even better than buying it from Apple with Edu discount once you figure in taxes!

Was that really necessary?
