Congratulations! What a jump from a Pent III 500 mHZ to a dual 1.83 gHz. Then put going from Windows (an older version I assume) to Tiger. I was very much a Windows man until they came out with OS 10. Once you get use to it, you will love it! I still have a Windows machine but it is off most of the time and only dusted off for a few programs that I can't get for Mac.

Good luck. If you have any problems or questions, feel free to post here. There are a lot of Mac people here ready and willing to help.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm definitely looking forward to getting the new machine. All the complaining that people have been doing about non-native apps not running as fast through Rosetta as they do on the G5s just makes me laugh, because those apps will still be running much faster than they do on the piece of junk I use now. And OSX... oh man. I've been using it every day at school, and I'm hooked. I know I said it in my last post, but I seriously can't wait. I'm giddy.

so they said mine isnt goint to be shipped till the 15th

So apple said that they will start shipping the 15th of Feb and i have a schedules dev date of march 3rd??? WTF!! Is that right I wil be on spring break so i changed the address to mail it home. I will be pissed if it comes at my house when im at school. Also, what is a good site to sell your old powerbook to?

First Impressions?

This thing is quite! My old G4 was so noisy. I donno about this "Mighty mouse". How do you do a right click? I did have a bit of a problem in that I'd created my new Iweb on my old G4. I wasn't quite sure how to transfer those Iweb files to my new Imac. So I surfed over to an Apple forum and found my answer there. :D Seems there is a file on the old G4 named, "Domain". That file must be copied to the new machine. I have my machines on a wireless "Extreme" network so it was easy to copy the file from my old G4 to the Imac. Once I did that my web appeared in Iweb on my new machine. Cool. I just wish there was an easy way to do a right click! I'll figure it out.

LOL! Dont Worry, give it a week or two and you'll be more comfortable.

Give it a month and you'll start to forget windows.

Give it 6 months and whenever you use a pc again, you'll be putting in the wrong bloody shortcuts and making the start bar pop up...
Then whenever it goes wrong you'll be screaming - but my mac doesn't do this.. BLOODY WINDOWS :D :D :D
Thanks for the words of support. I am getting a little bit more comfortable. It is way DIFFERENT.

It was extremely easy to load about 2500 jpgs we had on disk into the library of iPhoto. I am still trying to figure out how to organize the photos into something manageable (folder or album - I don't even know what it would be called).

It took me about 5 minutes to do a test "Welcome" page in iWeb. I can see the limitations (I am a dreamweaver user) but man is iWeb easy. You can really put something that looks nice in a very sort time. I even added an extra photo with a background shape behind it. I love being able to do things without reading instructions :)

Somes up the main benefits of mac software over pc :D

Glad your enjoying it.

Check out www.softpress.com and try the demo version of Freeway Pro.

I love that webdesign programme. You can work away in photoshop making a translucent overlaying font and simply drag it from your photosop workspace into freeway with everything preserved.. No more hassles with layerd graphics. No limitations with layouts in tables etc....

Takes a while to get used to it, but I find it offers me great freedom and also makes putting a webpage together for some of my clients that I've done Album covers for; so quick and fancy that they are bowled over...

Demo is free so give it a try.. It's mac only too...

Update2: Sim City 4 is "playable" in 800x600 with settings set to medium. The game runs pretty slow on 1024x768 with everything set to high. The game is not really playable, if you turn the settings down you can play it if you want but, I'd still wait until an Intel update/release if your really looking forward to playing it a lot.

How quickly would you say the date increments (on the fastest speed)? I have the Rush Hour expansion, so I would do considerably better than you would.

I was just browsing through some of my old files on my iBook G3 that is now acting as a firewire device of my iMac 2GHz :), and came upon a demo of NoLimits Rollercoaster. It is PowerPC only app, and I fired it up on my iMac, switched all graphics options up to the highest settings, including the resolution at 1680x1050. It ran as smooth as butter (do you say that in English  ). I was stunned. I had an average of around 80fps I'd say. The lowest it ever dropped down to was 35 fps, but it was usually somewhere up in the 90s. I guess this is due to the simulator being rather graphics- than code intensive. Anyway, I was impressed. (On a side note: I also ran OpenTTD, my favorite game out there at 1680x1050: No problems either).

I just wanted to say that I bought the 17-inch 1.83Ghz a couple hours ago at my local Apple Store. It's actually a lot bigger than what I was expecting -- I went into the Apple store and started messing around with the 17-inch, thinking it was the 20-inch. lol But then I saw the 20-inch and yeah, BIG.

Anyway, everything was very easy to set up (I was actually surprised!). It's a quiet computer, although I haven't really done much yet. It seems quite fast (I'm just using the Mac OS X apps right now).

Any advice for a new switcher?

Yesterday I checked the status of the 20 inch 2 GHz Intel Imac I'd ordered through MacMall and was happy to learn that it had finally shipped. I ordered my Imac w/ 1 Gb of memory and 256 MG of VRAM, a special order on Jan. 16th. I shipped UPS Ground, the cheap rate. Well this morning before leaving for work I checked the status again and to my surprise I find that according to UPS my package was picked up in Memphis, TN., and has a scheduled delivery date of TODAY. I checked once again at lunch and UPS shows it in Birmingham and "OUT FOR DELIVERY"! So I'm at home now on the look out for that big brown truck. COOL! What can brown do for me? Hurry and deliver my new Imac!

I can't find the 20" with a 256mb vram option at macmall. Details?:)

Go to system preferences and click on mouse. From there, set the right side of the mouse to secondary button! Enjoy...

You should add some memory, to see the real performance of the machine.

Otherwise, continue exploring your new Mac. You really got a good one, for being new to Macs. That is a great machine. Mine arrived this past week, and I cherish it.

I had to make a CALL to Macmall to special order the Intel Imac with 256 MB of VRAM. You won't find the option on Macmalls website, call them and you may order any configuration Apple will allow. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the help! Its nice to have the use of a right click once again.

You would think the mac would recognize the mighty mouse and select that option as default. But, for some reason it does not. Kinda PC'ish if you ask me. :p

I just ordered a..

20" Intel Core Duo 2.0ghz iMac
512mb RAM (more shortly)
250GB HD
256mb vram
Wireless keyboard and mouse

Estimated ship date: 4th February
Estimated delivery date: 10th February

Have just handed over my 14" 1.33ghz G4 SuperDrive 1.25GB RAM iBook for £730 to pay for this. :( Thats a long time with no Mac. :(

Oh - my iMac all in all cost me £1093.93 :)

Have any of you noticed that when checking apecode for tracking your shipment that it says "on hold; aircraft/truck failure"

well I can show you what happened and what is holding up our iMacs getting to Europe. My mac was delayed exactly on the 25th January when it was due to leave Shanghai:

http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=994364

I would put money on it, that it is that particular aircraft! :D

My iMac went flying over our place today from Anchorage Alaska, to Memphis Tennessee. I live in the Canadian Rockies so they over shot me a bit. I guess it will be doing a North American tour before I get my hands on it.

The good news is that it is in transit on the weekend. After watching it sit in Shanghai from the 23rd to the 27th it's nice to see it on the move.

Has it been everyone's experience that Fed-Ex underpromises and over delivers on their expected delivery dates?

They are telling me February 2nd now so I am just trying to determine when I should be around the house for delivery.

Thanks for any feedback you can offer.

We're sharing a very similar experience. Mine is listed as having been "Picked Up", but the location is still Shanghai. Anyhow, mine apparently can't get enough of Shanghai either--guess it wanted to stick around for the New Year.

Anyhow, I'm getting an estimate of 1 Feb 10:30 AM, and I'm wondering the exact same thing as you. I'm willing to take off a half-day to meet the post and set things up, and I don't want to blow a half-day on a bad estimate.

Anyhow, I second Mr Paw's atempt to learn about FedEx's estimates. Thanks.

Well in previous dealings with FEDEX, I've always had what they had in thier site as the day it hits my town.. HOWEVer, I've never gotten anything international either..

Heahhhhh.. I just checked my status..

Seems it's on the move again, however my deliever date is still Feb 06 darn it!

My tracking number said that it would be delivered on Feb 1st and it only changed after it was delivered on the 27th. So just keep checking the number and even give them a call if you need to, it'll be there before you know it :D

I plan on checking it everyday.. cause I'm impatient.. and I'm eager to shut down this PC and start up the Apple :D

But ... I suspect international shippments have a "padd" in it so that if anything happens ... they have a buffer..

It sure does, but I've got one more question. Are you still eligible for the rebate with a custom configuration? The amount of tax I pay at apple offsets the student discount that I'm eligible for.:)

Check it every day!

Apple listed my iMac for delivery on 1/25, Fedex posted estimated delivery as 1/27 on their website; the computer actually arrived ahead of schedule on 1/24.

Also, not to scare you, but FedEx actually left the iMac on the front porch (supposedly signature release on file!)
