Ok, one minor benchmark - I have a Java project that I use for benchmarking Java compilation.

On my Dell Latitude D810 laptop, with a 2.26GHz Pentium-M, 2GB RAM, running Windows, this takes 20 seconds to compile.

With Linux on my Dell desktop (1.8GHz P4, 1GB RAM), this took 40 seconds.

On the iMac, with a 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2 GB RAM, it takes 13 seconds, 53% better than the laptop and 3x better than an equivalently clocked P4 CPU. Looking at the activity monitor, the java compilation is single threaded (ie. takes up to 100%). So a 23% slower CPU is 53% faster at compiling

The Dell laptop will be slower because it has to run virus and spyware checkers and probably has a slower hard drive, but this is a good demonstration of the real world advantage - the Mac is no longer the poor child of Java development.

My iMac says "SHANGHAI, CN 02/01/2006 9:43 P.M. THE AIRLINE OFF-LOADED PACKAGES CAUSING A DELAY" :( - I have a feeling it won't be here by the estimated Feb 3 date...

I share your pain. My 20" iMac is on that same flight. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

In my case, my original estimated arrival date after placing the order was Feb-7 so I'm looking at the bright side.

man,

man, all this talk about getting a mac and I hate to say,
I ordered from amazon and paid 250$ less (actually, 400$ in total) and got it in two days.

I got a student discount, and I ordered the upgraded vram. I stand by my decision :)

Ken S - Yes, my original arrival date was the 7th as well; but I'm still hoping for the 3rd. I'm without a computer (sold my PowerBook) and have resorted to living in one of my University's many computer labs...ack, missing my personal computing experience!

Could be today!

:D FedEx says " Int'l shipment release". It's now in Mississauga, which is not far from where I live. It maybe delivered today, or tomarrow. Oh man...I'm so happy.

It sucks that limewire won't run on iMac. Although it might not be so bad.It will keep me from overloading iMac with porn.

Has anyone tired backing up DVD's? I understand that Toast 7 works fine under rosey.

On a scale of 1 to 10. How would you rate Frontrow?

Sure, if you wanted the standard configuration, then Amazon is a great choice especially with that rebate going on.

In my case, I was able to use an employee discount and I wanted to upgrade my VRAM so Amazon wasn't an option.

Mine left Memphis at 3:30 AM on the 31st. Arrived in Calgary at 6:26 AM on the 1st. Since then they have updated the activity four times to tell me its at their local FedEx facility. The last update says "Package not due for delivery". I called FedEx and they say its with the local courier company destined for my town, some 4 hours away from Calgary, but may not get delivered today. Probably tomorrow...

Uggh! Should have paid the extra for shipping by air instead of Ricshaw, Slow Boat and Bus.

Ok, it left Shanghai about 4 hours ago.

Any estimates as to when it will get here? :) TNT.

Well mine left Shanghai last friday (27th) and arrived at my door this morning (1st) so I'd say you MIGHT get it Saturday but probably Monday :(

Me too, my employee discount was better than Amazon's rebate, and I used Apple store gift cards I converted from mall gift certificates that were going to expire soon.

I was just playing around and found the "Front Row" and let me say.. thta's pretty neat.. :)

I'm impressed with Front Row... It's nice and I like the menu structure and the way the remote works depending on whether your in dvd, video or music options....

I'd give it 8.5.. If they added EyeTV support so an option for live TV was on there, then I'd give it a ten...

Mine too, and my original ship date was Feb-14 so I'm feeling positive. However, once it starts on its way, you want it NOW!

Oh well, time will pass and it will arrive. Anticipation is 90% of the joy of things.

I'm not so happy with FrontRow actually. Although I haven't gotten any of the "tearing" some of you have described (I have a 256MB VRAM, maybe that's it??), I have other problems: Some of my playlists from iTunes, that are nested in a Folder, just don't get displayed. Instead the contents of the whole folder is displayed. This seems to be the case when I have too many playlists in one folder. :( And some of my Photo albums display the wrong slideshow when I view them in FrontRow. Hmmmm...

Anyway, to the DVDs: Like someone said, I was actually quite disappointed to see how BAD some of my DVDs look on this glorious 20" screen. Especially the cheaper ones now show their price justification. Also, I now instantly see which photos I took were slightly unfocused or had dirt on the lens... never noticed that on my 12" iBook :p

Just got my intelMac

It was in Anchorage as of the 31st, and the estimated delivery date was the 6th, so when a cardboard box arrived today, I thought someone else had gotten something. Then … my 17" iMac with 2GB RAM has arrived and currently being set up. Guess Apple lowered my expectations only to surprise me :D . Hope everybody else has a similar experience.

i was actually impressed with FrontRow. i give it about an 8 out of 10. it could be better, but i'm pleased with it.

as far the screen on this thing, my photos look better on here than i've seen on any other computer so far. including my dell 20.1" ultrasharp

I ordered my iMac with standard shipping. It was supposed to ship by Jan 30th, and arrive Feb. 6th. The 30th came and nothing. So they shipped it on the 31st and made it expedited shipping. Its supposed to get here by the 3rd! That's awesome. Well now it's in Shanghi (Feb 1st), does anyone know how long it will take for it to get here (Iowa) ?

Speaking of Dell...

Did you happen to hear that it was leaked that the pricing on their core duo notebooks will range from $900 - $1500.

I was in the same boat, but now my tracking reveals it may be delayed due to some sort of accidental unloading or some such bull...:(

The iBooks (Maybe called Macbooks) will probably be in that same pricerange with core duos too.

Will they?

I thought everybody was speculating that the new iBooks would have single cores to distinguish them from the Mac Book Pros.

Who knows anyway? The leaked pricing could be wrong, too.

I guess we will have to wait and see.

Should have it today...

it's on a fedex delivery truck...its a good thing i don't have class today.
i feel so excitted i can't move.
