This is actually a pretty common request with product sponsorship.

Yes it is indeed but when you sponsor an event like the Olympics that's supposed to represent freedom A lot of people may have have a problem with this

I can't imagine that people using iPhones and iPads would go without using them. Do they actually think that the athletes will put some kind of case or sticker to cover the logo? It's not like you still wouldn't be able to tell what they are if they get showed on TV.

People would be able to recognize it as Apple products? But in Apple's lawsuit against Samsung they claimed that the devices were so similar that they would cause customer confusion. So, which is it?

I say ALL athletes with an Apple device rebel and show off their iPhones big time! Screw Samsung! What are they gonna do? Kick them out of the Olympics? I think not.

Uh. Where on earth did you get the idea that the Olympics represent freedom? You realize that China, and North Korea have Olympians too right?

So what does the Olympics represent when all the countries in the world get together I'm pretty sure one of them is freedom

From a marketing perspective, I can understand Samsung's desire to see this happen but there are better, more subtle ways to have achieved this. What a ham-handed attempt!

Here's a crazy idea. How about giving all the athletes high-quality Olympics-themed iPad and iPhone covers? Most of them would probably love to have their iDevice decked out in something Olympics themed and would appreciate the extra protection to their device. That's a win-win and would make Samsung look like the good guys while getting most (if not all) iDevices covered up and harder to identify.

Here's an idea: Apple gives iPhones and iPads to athletes, covered with huge Samsung stickers. After the games are over, all these athletes go on TV and remove the Samsung stickers, saying to the public that they were not allowed to do so earlier.

Do you really think 99% of the participants give a monkeys about apple or samsung. There going to see if there the best of the best in there field.

Lol, you're living in your own dreamland if you think professional athletes have any desire to be rebellious on behalf of Apple.

Considering some of the countries that have been involved as participants or hosts, freedom is not a factor except when it comes to the occasional boycott.

The Olympics are mainly about competition and nationalism. That's why they celebrate winners with their country's anthem.

Abiding by the rules is one thing, but the sponsoring corporation should not be able to ban or suggest a ban upon athletes when the rule 40 that is stated does not technically apply to athletes.

Which corporation is able to ban or has suggested a ban?

The Olympics are about bringing the best athletes in the world together to compete in the name of their country.

For many years the heated rivalry between communist countries and democratic countries was fueled by the attempt to prove that either freedom (on the democratic side) or control (on the communist side) produced better results.

While there has been improvement in terms of the freedom of people worldwide, if you think most people in the world enjoy any real amount of freedom, you are woefully misinformed.

And as I said many totalitarian regimes will be sending their athletes and not in the name of freedom.

Using my phone/camera is not to advertise the brand but to take pictures or to call my Mom and say "guess who I'm standing next to!?!" (which would be silly since she'd be watching me on TV!).

Being the athlete in the above example, I'm not advertising a product, I'm actually using it.

You took a quote relating to "Ambush Marketing" and associated it with John Public. Apart from Ambush marketing the rule is for the Athletes not to appear to endorse other products. There are many cases of Athletes who have official sponsorship having to cover the logo of their sponsor on their uniform.

You my friend can use any camera you want and any phone you want this only applies to the athletes unless you go along with six friends and a big Apple sign no one cares.

No, I did not. In the example I gave, I'm the athlete using the phone / camera. That's why my mom is watching the TV (not because I'm in the audience with 100,000 people, because she'll see me when I walk out).

The topic of this thread is the "Olympic Athletes Requested" rules (not the audience), if you read it in the context of the topic (and not you assuming I'm getting the topic wrong) it would make much more sense to you.

Specifically I'm drawing upon an example from a few winter olympics ago where one of the US athletes was next to the President (or maybe a former president) and actually handed the phone to the president to say hello to whomever they were on the phone with (mom?).

I can't speak for other countries I I live in USA for me the Olympics represent freedom.

The problem Samsung has is that they spent billions on this whole Olympic campaign and in London 2012 most people carried iPhones around recording. This meant that apple was possibly getting more adverting than Samsung had for nothing (anyway here in the UK where we have the BBC with no adverting).
I bet you people will still do it though.
Anyway if apple spent all this money on adverting the Olympics, would they do the same?
Yes, they would!
Why don't they become a sponseror as most of the teams will use Apple Macs as there main computer?

Wow. Feels like high school. Why is samsung so insecure if their devices rock so much.

Precisely! And how low will they go, after all their other shenanigans like allegedly paying for negative Apple publicity and blogging, and fudging their specs.

Not to mention the spineless attitude of the IOC. I realize they need big heaps of money from deep-pocketed companies, but I find it hard to believe such sponsorships can only be secured by acceding to the most unreasonable or even ludicrous requests. What about the press, who are going to be there in large numbers, with their phones and laptops, and what about the thousands of spectators that are going to be present at each of the events?

The IOC has shown no backbone to establish a line they won't cross, and Samsung has happily dictated their own conditions and ground rules.

This sort of censorship, cover up, master race mentality is what racism and genocide is born of.

CONTROL. They must control the information and the masses. They bought sponsorship, they did not buy control of what device is in the jacket pocket of each athlete and whether or not it might be *GASP* seen.

Whats with the thinking of the people in power positions these days. They think they are all controlling gods or something and little people must conform to their wishes.

Leave people alone, let them be individuals, let them think on their own, keep your hands off.

Yes it's censorship, but it's private censorship. Big difference between this and government squelching free speech. Companies like Samsung pay big money to sponsor the Games. Of course the Olympic committees are going to protect the valve of sponsorship & go after piggybackers or anyone else under its control that would diminish the cache of sponsorship.

What these games have turned into. It used to be a peaceful come together for amateur athletes from all over the world. Now it is purely commercial. The competing athletes are nowadays the minority - the majority are the highly paid officials. It is really starting to stink.

I admit to not reading the thread.

The irony of some people arguing against this because they hate Samsung is that it doesn't appear any of them have pointed out that if Samsung wants to be associated with being a sponsor and providing money to Russia when the government has shown such hatred towards homosexually, it's their liability. Further - I would almost think Apple - being the company and having the corporate culture they have (and a CEO who is out) would almost welcome this on at least a political level.

Wow guys, this is normal practice.

Something similar happened with the first Spiderman movie, where Sony wanted to hide Samsung's logo during the scene that happens in Time Square.

It is a very common practice and I can assure you that any other company would've done the same if they were the main sponsor, including Apple but then again, does Apple ever sponsor anything? Their fault, not Samsung's.

This. It happens all the time but, as usual, when it happens to Apple someone's always on this site crying.
