Is this promotion still active? I'm wondering what all I need to do to take advantage of it. I don't have any kindle at the moment.

you need a kindle with special offers. it's too late to order one from amazon, but you can find them at target or best buy. you have until 12:59p pacific on monday to claim a promo code (you do this directly on the kindle). they'll email you the promo code pretty much immediately, and you'll have until september 8th to claim it. people are selling these codes on ebay for $50+, and i'm sure other people are buying and returning kindles just for the codes.

It's too bad that this model does not have a way to adjust the screen contrast/brightness. I may be returning it because of the missing feature, but my wife and I will give it a try to see if it is a problem.

I was hoping that the Kindle could replace our iPad but the display may be a deal-killer for us...

For anyone else stuck here...newbs...

The Kindle does NOT give off light. It depends on external light sources. As a result, if you turn the wireless off, the Kindle can literally go for weeks without charging. Thus there are no brightness settings.

Regarding contrast, the Kindle 3 has few peers in this arena. The only other reader I've seen that even comes close is the Nook, but the Nook isn't nearly as fast as the Kindle 3. There's no longer a need for an adjustable contrast, BUT...when in a book, make sure you set the Typeface to sans serif. The other two look pitiful on the screen. Also, your source lighting should be whitish, like fluorescent, or day light, for the best result. Yellowish light doesn't come across as good. It'll do, but the appearance is like real paper when you're in good lighting.

wait so which amazon kindle do i need to buy? is this on ALL macs or just air?

the model with "special offers." it's an ad-supported version that sells for $114 for the wifi model ($139 for the 3g). this is good on "select" laptops, which includes all models of the macbook air and pro.

Has anyone bought a Kindle, get the 20% off code, buy the macbook air and then return the kindle? Does this work? Can you return the kindle after using the code?

Yes you can buy the kindle and return it and still use the coupon. It doesn't get voided. Whether or not you should is another question.

Thanks for this thread. I'm returning my week old 11" MBA and ordered another using the code.

I got a 3G+Wifi+Special Offers version from Best Buy this afternoon. This was the first time I used the Kindle and I think I'm going to keep it.

As a bonus, I found several threads confirming that the 3G Kindle will work even aboard cruise ships (using GPRS) without the exorbitant roaming fees ($19.97 / MB). With the built in "experimental" browser, that will at least let us check our email for free while aboard. If not aboard, at least while in port, which is usually almost everyday unless we're on a trans-atlantic.

Much better than paying $0.75 / minute cruise lines like to charge for wifi access, even if it's extremely slow. I can live with slow if it's free.

I brought my 3G+Wifi iPad on the last two cruises, but I never turned off airplane mode due to the crazy roaming cost.

If there's ads, it is the kindle special offers. Quick way to tell is press the menu button from home, if there's a special offers option on the menu screen, it's special offers.

And this is why Amazon has this deal, they're going to move a lot of kindles, even if some get returned. I'm actually thinking about picking up a second Kindle for my girlfriend,

It's saying that if you return the computer, you wont get the the twenty percent off back, not that if you return the kindle you will lose the discount. It rings the coupon as like a credit for the amount of 20% off.

For example, if the total was $1000, the discount would be for $200 and you would pay The remaining $800. The computer isn't at a lower price of $800, but rather you are in essence getting a $200 credit to use toward that original $1000. If you return the computer, you don't get the full $1000 back, but rather just the $800 you paid. The value of the discount ($200) is subtracted from the return credit ($1000)

But it also says u should have Kindle registered to the account your buying from.

Most of the Air's are out of stock, so they can just cancel orders?

So that means buying coupons off eBay won't work, anyone bought a voucher off eBay?

By the way, for all you new Kindle owners there's a master thread of all the special offers that have or will be offered on Slickdeals. It's a useful thread to keep track of any offers you haven't noticed.

I bought my KSO in May (to read, not for the deals) and so far I've saved almost $900 by way of discounts on items I was already planning on purchasing. I'd say it's paid for itself even though it's caused me to buy about $150 in books since then ;)

Under the terms and conditions it says that it is non transferable and also the kindle and the laptop purchased under this deal must be registered to the same email account. So unless I am not understanding this correctly, I would say buying a coupon off of ebay would not work.

Perfect! Thanks for the link

By the way...
I was thinking of buying the kindle then selling it on ebay - must one open up the box in order to get info in order to register for the coupon code? (I'd rather keep it sealed and sell it as brand new if I decide to go that route)

Yes. And the box has a zip cardboard pull on it that can't be resealed once you open it. To get the code you must go into the View Special Offers sub-menu, click the link to email you the offer and the code is generated and sent to your registered email address.

What is the return policy on a Kindle at Target and WalMart?

For Target it is 90 days, with no restocking fee if opened. I ended up picking one up last night and called customer service before opening it just in case.

The only problem is, now my wife wants to use the code to get a new MacBook Air to replace her 2 year old MacBook.
