You must have a Kindle with Special Offers model, which is a slightly cheaper version that displays ads and special offers like this one.
If begging doesn't work, and you don't want to actually buy a Kindle, you can buy a code on eBay. Here is one example:

You have until Monday to claim a code. Next day delivery from Amazon will work for the next couple of hours. Or, you can buy them at Target or Best Buy. I think there are other brick and mortar sources as well.

Most Best Buys now have free WiFi. They also have floor models of the Kindle. If someone were to use the floor model to log on to their Amazon account, they could request the code be emailed to them.
This is a one time event. A code can only be generated one time for each device. So, only the first person to do it on that device would succeed.
The ethical downside would be if someone later purchases the floor model with the intention of getting the code, only to discover that it had already been used. It's no loss to Best Buy since the floor model will work for future deals and it's still completely functional. As for Amazon and Apple, I'm sure they have gamed out the advantages/disadvantages prior to making this offer and using a floor model doesn't change the equation.
If you are running to Best Buy or Target to get one yourself, I would advise getting one in a box.

wait .. i just bought a base 13 from apple .. i thought with the edu discount i would get the apple gift card but i guess that is just with mbps and iMacs ..

My experience with Amazon shipping is not so good. Sometimes it took very very long to get the items. I even had to cancel many in the past.
If you don't have the Kindle on hand, the difference would be around $100-150 between Amazon and BB for 13" Base model, and you don't have to wait 1-2 months. But having the Kindle for the next use, sounds temptation to me.
it's $250+ not 100-150..in most places
$1250 plus tax and you get a $100 gift card at best buy..you can't apply the gift card to this purchase afaik. Anyway, that makes it ~1360 with gift card vs $98x shipped.The cash difference is almost $400, if you want to take the gift card into account it's still almost $300 - $250 if you factor in the kindle cost and resale at a measly $70

Caveat based on the brand new KSO sitting here -- there is a banner ad at the bottom of the Home screen, as well as when it's turned off, but that's it.
OP -- THANK YOU, you just saved me a bunch of money. Compared to even the Best Buy $100-off-sale + $100 gift card deal, this is $100 less and nets me a free Kindle. (tax is about $90 of it).
Apple screwed you. The Back to School promo is good for Macbook Airs.
Did you buy in-store or online? Online, the card is added to your order and is clearly there.

(1) Kindle is actually $114, and you have a Kindle now, or you can sell it
(2) What is the BestBuy -$100 and $100 gift card? Are these educational discounts at all, which would only apply to students?
(3) Good for you that you have a tax-free weekend, not everyone does.
(4) Amazon already gives a decent discount on some models, such as about $60 off on the 11"/4GB/128GB.
(5) I think the 1-2 month shipping can be safely ignored, IMO. I ordered my MBA this week and it said 1-2 months at the time, and it arrived today.
So yes, this deal might not be the best, or at least substantially better, for you, but for many of us it is fantastic.
