that's how all of us feel I think. If we KNEW it would not mess up our first order and we'd still get it on the 24th we'd cancel.

The thing I'm worried about? How many of Apple's record sales are not duplicate orders? Like 10,000? 50,000? I bet it's a lot of that 600k as people were able to do multiple orders on launch day at the 199 price.

I'm sure you're right. Many of us ended up with multiple orders by accident. Meaning the system didn't say our purchase had gone through but later it showed up as a sale. I got emails that I had three phones (and I only wanted one).

I ordered through the Apple site, so I went back online and cancelled the two orders with the latest dates. My real order, the first one, was not affected.
I preferred to take care of it so I could release these phones to others, and I could be sure I protected my one order.

Each phone, even unactivated, has an identity which can be traced back to you.

Just wait and see what happens. Return one to the store if you end up with an extra. All this "Cancel for the sake of others" nonsense is juvenile. Whether you return it or sell it, the extras will end up in some owners hands regardless. We aren't talking about swine flu vaccines here, it's a damn phone.

If you have two iPhones ordered through Apple on the same number they will cancel the second one once they start processing the orders. When you preorder it initially only checks eligibility for the preorder... but once they start actually processing the orders it will check eligibility again and update your account to reflect the upgrade (right now everyone who preordered is still eligible for a subsidized upgrade, etc). So once your account is updated the second phone will not go through, they send you an e-mail saying you need to call because there is a problem with your account, etc.

I don't know how it works when you have 1 from AT&T and 1 from Apple, or 2 from AT&T however.

What's your basis for this information?

Mine already shows I am not eligible for an upgrade

Same here, but I believe that's due to the ATT order. If what the above poster said is true, it sounds like when Apple goes to process my order it will kick it back because my upgrade is gone. At that point I'll be stuck wondering if ATT is going to deliver on launch day while everyone that ordered with Apple gets theirs on Thursday.

It's sounding more and more like I need to do something here to get the ATT order canceled.

he's probably made the whole thing up. Do you feel lucky?

I made an AT&T preorder (actually turned into two) and two Apple preorders. I know one or two of those iPhones went under the same number in all the mayhem of trying to get at least one preorder to go through. So far, three of the four preorders have been processed and charged (I tried to get the duplicate AT&T order cancelled), and have remained that way still. IMO, after the charge is done, I don't believe Apple will take another round of 600,000 inquiries to the AT&T servers again before shipping out.

Mine already shows I am not eligible for an upgrade

All the more reason to believe that the checks have been done.

Two Orders

Well Apple has put the money back in my account so it looks like I am going to be screwed and get the one from AT&T and it probably will not make it to my house on the 24th!! That sucks I was going to call AT&T today and cancel that one since the Apple order was suppose to be here on the 24th!!! My luck!!

I sense BS. Show us your Screenshot of the Apple order.
What does it say and what does Apple tell you was the reason your order was cancelled.

fibber.

Other threads on here somewhere talk about Apple returning the pre-auth money to the account and then charging for real when it ships. Do a search.

What are you showing us here? Mine says the exact same.

Fair enough and well argued.
But what about this counter....
many of us with two orders are in that position because we got up way early, and had to try ordering literally for hours and did not know we had multiple orders until a day or so later. With that being said, isn't it sort of true we deserve a meager profit off the second phone for our trouble that day.

As it might surprise you I started ordering at 2:00 AM my time when Apple.com's store went live and started the pre-order of iPhone 4. I tried for 2 hours and was never able to get through to the order page, I even tried AT&T and still no luck. I woke up again at 7:00 AM and started the process again, finally at 2:00 PM I was finally able to get through and order from AT&T, and not too soon after did AT&T announce they had sold out of their pre-orders. I was quite mad, and I almost thought about trying to order again from Apple.com as their website still claimed June 24th delivery. However I didn't want to be greedy and jeopardize myself in getting iPhone 4. So I stuck it out with my ONE order from AT&T, I didn't even get my confirmation email until the next day mid-afternoon. I waited patiently and played the game fair. I know that it sucked dealing with AT&T and Apple.com trying to get the iPhone 4 ordered, but patience is a virtue and usually pays off. I can understand that many people get paranoid when dealing with something that they want so bad.

Maybe it is fair that you do keep the extra phone that you ordered, maybe it's not, but it's all up to your judgment. I just believe that everybody deserves a fair chance at getting iPhone 4, and it's up to all of us to make that happen. God knows AT&T and Apple.com didn't give anyone a fair chance on pre-order day!

Agreed, but I think I speak for most everyone in this position when I say that we didn't do it out of greed, we did it because we never got confirmation of our ATT orders. I didn't double order just to be safe; I did it because I ordered on ATT and the site hung when I hit "place my order", so I went back over to Apple and kept trying there. It wasn't until much later that night that I found out I had a successful order from ATT.

I completely agree, when all is said and done, it's just a phone and everyone that wants one will have one, but it's a matter of when will they have one. There were sooo many people trying to pre-order on Tuesday, that many of those people won't even get their iPhone 4 until maybe 2 weeks after many people will get theirs. Some of these people spent all day trying to order too. For some people the release of iPhone 4 is like Christmas morning and opening presents (or whatever holiday you celebrate), they get extremely excited about it and it's what they look forward to each year. This is a "put yourself in someone elses shoes moment."

Maybe it's not economical to go about canceling for the sake of others, but it sure as hell is a nice gesture.

I definitely understand the situation you are talking about. It was frustrating as hell on Tuesday trying to order. And I also know that most of the duplicate orders were on mistake. I'm also sure many people will cancel their orders because they can't afford 2 or 3 iPhone 4's, and maybe some will cancel because they don't need the others. All I was trying to say before in this thread was that everyone deserved a fair chance at getting iPhone 4 on launch day, and those that placed duplicate orders mistakenly or not should at least attempt to cancel. I myself will be getting my iPhone 4 on launch day, but if I weren't I would be pretty pissed, which is why I am trying to speak for the other frustrated people out there who tried to order all day long and got screwed into a July 2nd or July 14th delivery.

That's a stupid analogy. You can't get more than one swine flu vaccine. You can't sell off an extra vaccine.

This is one reason to sort it out yourself instead of waiting and hoping maybe you'll get more phones than you originally ordered.

Yes, most of us are in this position for that reason. Certainly those of us who are posting encouraging OP to sort it out now rather than leave it up to chance didn't order multiples on purpose. But look to other threads to see how some buyers are trying to become scalpers (which may backfire on them).

I haven't gotten an email, but I called AT&T today again, and they confirmed my order is cancelled from them. Still have the one from Apple :)

I had 2 with apple, I canceled the 2nd one. Anyone with more than one per number might as well cancel the extra one(s) now to avoid problems later, like a charge for the FULL NON SUBSIDIZED PRICE, or a restocking fee for an opened one.

Bs?

No I am not saying Apple cancelled the order the money was put back in my checking account..so it makes me feel like it was cancelled. It still says ship date is the 24th though...but from what I am reading the Apple will re-charge your card once they ship it so I am just confused as the rest of us I guess.

Not opened = no restocking fee. Just hold your position and if you end up with two, just return one or sell it outright. Problem solved.
