I have been having problems with a few websites ever since I installed Tiger. I would like to figure out if it is just my computer or if something happened with the site, etc.

Could someone go to http://www.edmunds.com

The site loads fine initially but when you click on the tabs near the top of the site (for example: "New Cars"), the entire page doesn't render and I am forced to reload the page.

Am I the only one who has this problem?

Thanks,
Hickman

As a partner of Edmunds, I visit their site a lot. This happens in Windows with IE and Firefox also. I have had some success deleting their cookies to get the pages to load. Edmunds is aware of this problem.

Interesting. I don't have any issues with the site on Windows at all. On my PowerBook, the site loads with Firefox and Netscape. It just doesn't work with Safari.

Edmunds happens to be one of the sites that I go to everyday and it just annoys me that I have to keep all of these extra browsers around for a few sites.

Same here.

Fireworks 1.0.5 works. So it's a safari problem.

Thanks. At least I know it isn't something with my install (plugin incompatibilities, etc)

hey kasei!!!

you have the same mac as me.

i just noticed something with my mac now that i upgraded to 10.4.2

-when i type on my BT apple keyboard or the PB keyboard i can heard
i high pitched sound... like a little mouse in my PB.

a little beep for each time i press a key.

it comes and goes, i put my ear to my pb and it sounds like its coming
from the harddrive. i dunno..

have you or anyone eles notice this???

This is happens to me on my Powerbook sometimes. With some OS X updates, I get the sound, on other I don't. The noise is coming from the processor. If I change processor settings, I can usually make the niose stop. I talked to a Apple Level 2 Tech on the phone and he said it was somewhat normal.

Right now, I get the sound most often when I'm using Dreamweaver or when scrolling on webapges that have Flash compnents on them, but its pretty random, anything or nothing can cause it. Nothing to worry about, other than its just a little annoying. Usually if there's anything else going on in the room, I can't even hear it because its so quiet. Hope that helps.

No problems here on the first two machines in my sig.

Is it just me, or is OS X becoming more Windows-like with all the security logins and "do you want to do this" popups these days? I mean better safe than sorry, but sheesh.

I'm disappointed in 10.4.2 - I find Mail to be just as slow and useless with an IMAP server as it was before. The only thing it's really good at is mangling attachments.

Any rumours about when 10.4.3 is due?

FWIW Mail works well for me as an IMAP client (using with Fastmail). No attachment problems either.

Nope, at least, not with a Logitech MX 900...

Historically its only worked with apple mice...

and yep, a waste of plastic.

one mouse button.

Bet it doesn't show battery status, though.

Is it just me or are h.264 clips playing back a lot smoother after 10.4.2?

Would most typical users take the time to learn keyboard shortcuts though, or would they prefer to right click and select from there?

Most of us know a lot of keyboard shortcuts, but if you asked one of your parents, or a younger brother/sister will they have any idea?
Yes, definitely. "Easy" is all relative. Arthritis, for example, makes scrolling multi-button mice a lot less attractive than a mouse with a single palm-initiated click and a rich set of keyboard functions. Show an older Mac user that list of keyboard shortcuts and you'll have a new bestest friend.

For the little ones, ask a room full of six year old kids to hold out their left hands, and half will hold out the right. Plenty of people never get that straightened out!

Those aren't obscure edge cases, they are perfectly normal people at different stages of life. You know, "the rest of us."

Absolutely true.

I agree: I'm one of them!

Nice of you to say so.

I'd like to see a smooth scroll button on keyboards if Apple never introduce a scrolling mouse - a button which when pressed would scroll nicely like a wheel, that you could speed up or down to suit your preferences.

This is the main thing that bugs me when I use laptops as the arrow key is often too abrupt in moving the page, and using the pointer to pull the scroll bar down in a pain!

I'm almost certain that if I ask my dad does he know any keyboard shortcuts, he'll know what I'm talking about, but won't actually know any. I'll ask him later to check!

A better question is... When the heck will Windows Media Player for OS X be any good??? The OS X version SUCKS compared to the Windows version. So many codecs are unsupported and so many features are lacking -- especially when it comes to content embeded in webpages.

Well for $10 you can install the WMP codec that will allow you to view WMP files from within Quicktime! Its pretty amazing! In fact i've now removed all the other media players from my system (VLC/Xinema/WMP etc) I just double click on ANY video file (excluding Real PLayer - what a loss! lol) and it pops open in Quicktime!

I have also tested it with WMPs High Definition files and it works PERFECTLY. You can also preview WMP files from within Finder.

PLease check the link out, I genuinely HATE WMP and this has been the best $10 i've ever spent. Please don't be put off my the reviews on the site, some of the readers are muppets.

"Great idea, but crappy attempt. It cuts off WMVs about half way through the video, there is no point in downloading this to not be able to watch the full movies, I'm going back to Microsoft WMP until this gets better. "

bloody muppets! As the developer stated, if you could watch the whole thing for free you wouldn't want to pay for it!

DEATH TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER!

I used to have one of the buttons on my MX700 mapped to activate Dashboard. Now, that button brings up the task list no matter what I do. Anyone else found this problem?

All is fine with 10.4.2 on my Beige G3 MT

Thanks to the wonderful program XpostFacto, I have been able to load Tiger on my G3 MT. With 512M RAM, it runs just fine. I have a Radeon 7000 and an old OrangeMicro combo Firewire/USB 2.0 card (I think it was the first combo card out), with external Western Digital Firewire Harddrive and a MadDog USB 2.0 DVD burner (needed to use the other great program, Patchburn, so the MadDog is "seen" by the OS and other apps.

It's a real testiment to the operating system design, and the MacOS developer community that my 6 year old system can run, and run well, the world's most advanced OS.

My thanks again to all those with the time and talent to help us extend the life of our computers

I'm not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but I just helped a friend install the update on his G4 700 Mhz iMac 15" with super-drive. After the first restart to finish the install the gray screen with the gray Apple just sat there and did nothing for 5 minutes.

Subsequently I tried powering down several times and restarting, but each time it was back to the gray screen. I had to restart while holding the "eject" button to get the CD tray opened; now I put in the 10.4 install CD and booted up from the CD (By holding down "C" while restarting). I repaired permissions from the Utility menu and restarted. Nothing.

Finally I had to archive and install 10.4, and then we'll be able to (hopefully, knock on wood) start up in 10.4.0 and make sure all the settings are in order, then delete the "previous system" folder, and WAIT FOR 10.4.3. I definitely can't say this is common, but something waaay screwed up this installation, and it freaks me out. Any comments, suggestions?
On my Powerbook, after the restart it also took a long time to get going. I am betting it felt like 5 minutes but I am guessing you should have displayed a little more patience. Mine eventually came around (seemed like forever as well) and everything is just great. Could be that you did have something strange happen though. But for others getting ready to update, give it some time to do its thing before jumping in.

Used the update well into the evening and I haven't found any problems with the system or with the apps that I use.

I do wish however, that the dashboard dock and the widget manager could be combined into one item or at least provide the option to turn off the dock. I also wish the manager was either more like the main dock on the desktop or more like a menu item where you could see all of your widgets at once. The widget style just doesn't quite thrill me for dashboard. It is a step in right direction however.

On my current generation Powerbook G4 12-inch, when I go to my name in the upper hand corner of the screen and select, "Login Window," then from the login menu when I select "sleep," it wakes back up after 3-4 seconds, but the second time I push "sleep," it goes to sleep for good. This began for me after 10.4.1. Does anyone else have this happen? :( It doesn't do it, if I put it to sleep without going to the login window, but I like to go to the login window.

I was really hoping 10.4.2 would fix this, but no :(

Can't you just logout and close the lid? It is a lappy, after all. Or have it set to require a password on wake-up, and just close the lid.

More 3rd Party Mouse Support...

Did anyone notice that if you have the widget bar open on the bottom of the screen that clickng foward/backward on your mouse will cycle through the pages... pretty neat! (not sure if this is new for this version as i've never tried it before).

My install has been painless, but I do notice that I don't have any "minus/delete" symbols next to my widget manager... anyone have this problem? I know that I have to authenticate to make any changes to my Widgets folder, so I don't know if thats the problem. I have admin privilleges so I'm not sure what else to do.
