If you are using a third party mouse, say a Microsoft or Logitech, you need to use their preference pane (or application) to set the right speed (you may want to check your Applications folder first).

All mice that scroll are third-party, so if what you're saying is correct, none of us should see the scrolling option since there is no such thing as an Apple mouse with scroll wheel. I have see the scrolling option with both my Kensington and Logitech mice.

Garbage in. Garbage out.

Is it just me, or is OS X becoming more Windows-like with all the security logins and "do you want to do this" popups these days? I mean better safe than sorry, but sheesh.
The computer only knows what it's instructed to do. With more and more threats from outside sources trying to get into your computer and "instructing" with garbage, spam, spyware, viruses, etc., the more that security measures have to go up. And the only way to tell it is through these "popups" of which you speak. One day, we'll be able to talk to our computer so well that, with voice recognition software, we'll just be able to say "Authentication" and we'll be able to move along a lot quickly.

This is all simply by being on the internet. Those without service have no clue what most computer owners go through... and those who've always owned a Mac. :D

Try downloading the 10.4.2 update from Apple's site and reinstalling.
I did. Didn't work. I had to reinstall 10.4, then do all the updates again. That solved the problem.

But the fact is, it is a major bug at work here. DO NOT run fsck upon reboot after installing 10.4.2 or it will find problems with certain temp files and ultimately kill your menubar icons. I learned this the hard way.

iBook G3 will not update to 10.4.2

For some reason my iBook (snow white) won't update to 10.4.2, I go into system prefs, and just as it is checking for new updates, it crashes. I've sent this problem to Apple already. What has gone wrong?
I want 10.4.2 so badly!!!

The GotMailG widget doesn't go to the account inbox in Gmail when you click it anymore. It reports the correct number of new messages, though. Stinks!

Display prefs and ejection

I still have the same 'bugs' since 10.4: Every so often, when fast user switching, my display colors go a little funky and I can't adjust them getting the message "Cannot calibrate the display" --- fixed by a reboot. I also have an intermittent problem where I can't eject a CD from the internal drive --- eventually the finder crashes and I have to reboot...This problem I really can't stand...the most 'advanced operating system' and it can't eject a dang CD without taking the whole computer down with it....

not sure that's right

You need to actually click the mouse to wake the computer up.
You must have some serious vibration! :)

I use a datadesk trackball keyboard, and moving the trackball even slightly wakes from sleep, no need to click. I'd think the same would be true of a mouse.

Synergy problems

I just updated and everything seems fine except for Synergy (the keyboard & mouse sharing program, not the iTunes controller). I have Synergy server running on my 500Mhz DP PowerMac under 10.3.9. I run Synergy client on my PowerBook 15" 1.25Ghz under 10.4.2.

Ever since the upgrade this morning, I'm not able to bring up my hidden dock by moving the mouse to the bottom of the screen on the PowerBook. Same goes for my hot corners for Expose and Dashboard.

Also, when clicking on menu items (or really any UI element for that matter) I get no onMouseOver indications (made up term, I know) to indicate what menu item my cursor is over.

Wondering if anyone else is having problems with Synergy after the upgrade.

Downloading now, here's hoping for an experience at least 25% better than 10.4.1, which will rank down there with 10.3.2 as my worst OS X experience ever.

I'd say my worst OS experience was 7.5
7.6 was a huge improvement however.

My external firewire drive (fantom drive) no longer mounts! upon plugging it in it asks me if I want to ignore, eject or initialize...I am positive the directory is in tact, the drive works fine on all the other macs. This update came out so soon fantom has nothing on it yet.

is anyone having trouble un-rar-ing? Expander just hangs at the end of the task and I have to force quit. I've tried on several .rar files with the same results.

I'm happy that we have good security with our Mac. Wonder is voice recognition will be coming with the next Mac OS, that is after X. Using voice, iris, or finger print would be awesome.

Didn't fix the biggest problem my iBook is having with Tiger, which is that Spotlight completely doesn't work. Nor does searching in the Finder. I've tried every recommended procedure, including reinstalling Tiger and going into Terminal mess around with the indexing. I've heard of people having this problem, but others seem to be able to resolve it. Any ideas? Anyone? Pretty desperate here.

Yes, definitely. "Easy" is all relative. Arthritis, for example, makes scrolling multi-button mice a lot less attractive than a mouse with a single palm-initiated click and a rich set of keyboard functions. Show an older Mac user that list of keyboard shortcuts and you'll have a new bestest friend.

For the little ones, ask a room full of six year old kids to hold out their left hands, and half will hold out the right. Plenty of people never get that straightened out!

Those aren't obscure edge cases, they are perfectly normal people at different stages of life. You know, "the rest of us."

I'm just happy there is full OS support for my 5+ button wheel mice. I don't mind a throwaway one-button mouse packaged with my macs for the "normies" :)

edit:

Augh! fast user switching still breaks the color calibration (forces generic RGB, and you can't switch to another unless you log out all users).

Mail is still slow!

I'm still getting the "Loading Message" when opening new mail even after the update. Is anyone actually seeing a fixed MAIL with the 10.4.2 update? It's just as bad as it was before for me (using IMAP).

IMAP still appears to be fundamentally broken here too :( It's a shame, Panther's mail was really nice.
