Maybe too soon to say for sure, only about 30 minutes after the update...(knock wood)...

My PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8 from the time I got it both with Panther and then Tiger had it's fans spinning and whirring at often ridiculous levels when the computer was barely doing anything or even just idling.

After 10.4.2...whisper quiet...shhhhh....

I agree, the update seems to have slightly toned down the chirp sounds and the fan take off.

@Thumper, although I do agree a redesign of their mouse would be great, I still like the 1 button mouse ideal. Why, you ask? Well too many people in the PC world rely on the mouse too extensively. keyboard commands are so much more efficient and much faster in most uses, once you know them. For contextual menu's it isnt difficult to press one key along with the mouse is it? It was awkward to use the middle finger for a second mouse button when they debuted. multiple buttons to be programmable is great but mostly used with gaming, unless you have an artists or video pro's mouse hardware specific for those purposes.

yes key commands are faster, as all mac users know.

but why not have the option? if Apple made a 5 button mouse no one
is telling you to use them all. Go ahead and use only one button.

I have a BlueTooth Microsoft mouse and i cannt live without it now. reasons?

- scroll wheel, makes life so much easier on the net.

-2 buttons on the side which i maped to Expose!! one button to
show all windows, the other to show my desktop.. TALK about SLICK!!!

-the right click is a must for games, but its also nice for some apps.

it seems so wastful of apple to make a mouse and only give it one little button. the apple Optical bluetooth mouse at my Mac store in canada sells
for $99.99 My Mirco BT optical mouse with 5 buttons+scroll was $69.99 and
fits nicely in my hand. this is one of the only things Microsoft makes that i love.

also, i was in a computer store which soled Macs & PC's, i watch some pc users walk up to the mac and say, "woah this is really cool, look at this dock! and how the window srinks down into it!!! wait! how do you right click!?!?!? awww this is stupid!" ***then walk away.

having more buttons is great for the common folk and for PC switchers.
and for the Mac experts.. no one its telling you to use the buttons, although im sure youll find something to map to them ;)

*how about mapping DashBoard to the right click ? :D

Nice to see the update and it helped with fan control on my iMac G5 as well. It seems there are still a lot of issues with 10.4 that we never saw on 10.3.

It makes you wonder what will happen when the Intel Macs come out.

The first models could prove to be lemons when it comes to compatibility and everything "just working" ;o)

For some reason my iBook (snow white) won't update to 10.4.2, I go into system prefs, and just as it is checking for new updates, it crashes. I've sent this problem to Apple already. What has gone wrong?
I want 10.4.2 so badly!!!

my DigiDesign Mbox crashes EVERYTHING!!!
today i was playing Zero Hour, i was kickin some butt then
it CRASHED!!!

right now with tiger, it seems the Mbox makes
everything crash.

For me, the MBOX was very unstable, I sold it and got Logic and other add ons(firewire device)

It seems to me like Protools LE systems are just way too buggy and unstable.
I don't know about the digi002 though...that one might be stable since it is firewire.

Didn't fix the biggest problem my iBook is having with Tiger, which is that Spotlight completely doesn't work. Nor does searching in the Finder. I've tried every recommended procedure, including reinstalling Tiger and going into Terminal mess around with the indexing. I've heard of people having this problem, but others seem to be able to resolve it. Any ideas? Anyone? Pretty desperate here.

What kind of iBook? How old is it, and what was the original OS version? Is your hard disk a journalled MacHFS+ volume? I'm not sure that was a default on all earlier versions of OS X (It was in Panther, and I *think* it was in Jag). When you re-installed, have you tried reformatting the disk in the process?

Is it just me, or is OS X becoming more Windows-like with all the security logins and "do you want to do this" popups these days? I mean better safe than sorry, but sheesh.

Eek! Don't say "Windows-Like"! Seriously though, this bothers me too. It is making it much harder to administer the machines. It should be that you can designate the machine as "In a safe place" somewhere in the System Preferences and then you log in once (if auto-login is not turned on) and you automatically have full permissions for everything. Sure, some software may be disallowed until it gets a key on the keychain but you should be able to do everything not not have to sudo or keep entering passwords. It is very annoying in a small home environment.

I had a really fun day with the original 10.2.8...

I think it was 10.3.7 that really slowed down my PBook to the point of making it almost unusable... it wasn't until 10.3.9 that it got snappy again, but never to the pre-10.3.7 levels.

I hope 10.4.2 works as advertised... I usually wait until reading some comments for applying the upgrade, but this time I left it downloading at home so it'll be ready when I get back from work.

guess what.. the iphoto bug is still there.. destroys pics still. Fantastic. The biggest bug in the lot and it's still alive.

Flash MX 2004 is still crashing on launch too. Bravo ya dumbasses.

If you have WACOM drivers installed, reinstall those and it will fix your Flash crash issues.

HA, honestly, a hybrid would be ideal. I work at a school and we have a few computer labs of various digidesign hardware, as well as some m-audio and motu gear.

MBOX: yes it's USB, so it's slow can't handle many plugins and only has 2 inputs, however it DOES have focusrite mic pres...most people don't know or seem to care, but they are nice.

The 002rack on the other hand...we have a whole lab full of those...they process much better, however WOULD not mount on our Dual 1.25 mirrored door G4s. Turns out we had the firewire 800 model and the digi hardware will not work with the 400 ports because the 800 piggybacks from the 400 ports, digidesign gave me a VERY small list of third party PCI firewire cards that would accommodate.

In the long run, ANYTHING firewire, both external drives and interfaces are SUPER unstable, as much as the MBOX can suck it is far more stable than anything running through the firewire ports. I miss the days of PCI, like the 001 which has since been discontinued. The 001s were the FASTEST and the most reliable, it is a shame digi stopped supporting them.

For the record the MOTU and M-audio firewire interfaces are about the same, they aren't always recognized at startup. And as for this whole Hot-pluggable MYTH...I assure you it is JUST that. You should be very careful when hot-plugging any audio interface or external drive many times I have seen the ports literally fry on either the computer or the piece of gear. Every three months at least 4 computers or drives blow a port (out of around 40) just from hot plugging.

Despite the stranglehold that digidesign has on us they are very much like apple...they require you to use THEIR hardware. Which interestingly enough they are now making a build of pro tools for m-audio gear...which is VERY comparable to the PPC-Intel switch...on SO many levels...hmmm interesting. And the bottom line...all the pros use Pro Tools :p

oh and another thing, we are still running 10.3.7 in all of our studios, it is still the most stable for pro tools. 10.3.8 and 9 were shaky and I still don't trust tiger on pro tools, which is why I am still beta-testing it at home, hopefully we will have it installed by our fall semester...all the students complain that we aren't on the latest and greatest...but I have to remind them that the latest is rarely the greatest, and this seems to be the case with tiger...AND 10.4.2

I saw something while installing 10.4.2 that I haven't noticed before.

As usual, the progress bar gradually moved from 0% toward 100%, reaching the "Finishing Installation" step at 99%, just a sliver before the end of the progress bar. But then it jumped back to about 95% as the message changed to "Optimizing System Performance". I've seen it get to 99% and then take a long time to clean up and finally finish, but I haven't seen the progress bar take such a leap backwards before.

Can anyone confirm if the chirp sound on the Power Mac G5 is now gone?

The sound happens during graphic intensive work?

Anyone?

Download and install CHUD tools, go to the Processor preference panel and uncheck napping. Problem solved (for me at least), but it needs to be re-unchecked each restart.

Loaded up 10.4.2 and updates to FCP 5 Suite. Then put together a 15 minute training video. I used the entire suite with a single problem. It ran better.

Safari is still not problem free in OS 10.4.2. I still am experiencing unexpected quits when trying to load certain pages. (For example: http://www.gradolabs.com then click the headphones link to open http://gradolabs.com/frameset_hdpns.htm) You should experience an unexpected quit using OS 10.4.2 and Safari Version 2.0 (412.2).

Annoying to say the least.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I'm using the latest WebKit builds thanks to NightShift and the page opens perfectly fine. I tried opening it in a new tab and new window without any problems.

If you've tried everything recommended, I doubt we'll be able to come up with anything new unfortunately.

Have you tried forcing the reindex by dragging your HD into the Spotlight Privacy preferences, closing it and then dragging it back out of the Privacy settings so that it indexes? I know that's one of the recommended ways so you've likely already tried.

TiBookG4/5, it did not crash for me at the step you described, but once the frameset opened, using the tab controls on the upper left did crash Safari.... I am using the standard 412.2 build.

Obvious sign of future tight integration. Great news for my Cingular customer self, had to use use the user agent spoof option in Safari 2 to access cingular.com previously!

Could be. I got a new Razr V3 Monday. I was bummed, because iSync would not recognize it via Bluetooth to sync calendars and contacts. USB worked fine.

I tried it after installing 10.4.2 last night and it worked like a charm via Bluetooth.

I am a very happy camper at the moment. :D
