Have these people seen how slow and awkward wireless charging is?

Except you didn't factor the convenience factor with wireless charging. Others want to seamlessly put their device down without the need of a wire, it's easier in the dark and with the Airpower, you charge the iPhone X, Airpods and Apple Watch at the same time. Convenience and simplicity outweighs slow and awkward.

That X buyers would want/need the biggest storage size is no shocker. Kinda a "duh" moment. This survey kind of reinforces convention wisdom and, to me, underline my wondering why the heck did Apple keep the iPhone 6 in the line up. $100 difference between 6s and 7 but 7 has more longevity.

What does surprise me a bit is that consumers don't seem to be confused by the growing array of very similar models. The 6S and 7 are quite similar and only about $100 apart yet desire for the 7 is more than 2x over the 6s. The 7 is 3x over the 6. So again. Why did Apple keep the crusty 6s on the list. Seems those buying the 6s likely would have bought the 7.

Also wonder what will happen to the SE. Is it a one-off experiment like the 5c? It is a "special edition," not "regular edition," after all. I think a bezel-free OLED in the SE footprint would easily consume iPhone 6s sales and a bit of iPhone 7 sales too. I guess we'll see next spring. I don't see how Apple can carry the SE to next fall.

But smart of Apple to remove the 128GB option; forced to choose between 64 and 256GB, many more are going to go for 256 than would, if the 128GB option had been available. Not so great for us.
it depends - if you were always getting the middle tier - you are definitely better off now. To me looks like Apple rolled the dice here and said 'US folks are all paying monthly so they will be less sensitive to pricing' - the question is overseas, so far all pricing I am seeing its utterly ridiculous

Look, Apple is segmenting its market because they are savvy in a sense. There is a marketing perspective that brands will increase price, because there is a market willing to pay more. Apple is trying to reach for that market and leave those that can't in the same tier they are accustomed to. For those that want more and can afford it, they move up. They also price cut the older models for those that are unwilling or simply cannot pay and are willing to wait.

Have to admit I'm surprised about the breakdown for most appealing feature. Wireless charging to me is sort of meh since you still have to put the phone in a particular/specific spot, which itself is wired to an outlet. Happy to take it, I guess, but not something that's especially bothered me as "a problem" with the phones I've owned for the last 10 years.

Try successfully connecting - first go - iPhone to Apple lighting iPhone dock in the dark/gloom of a bedroom (where others are sleeping therefore can’t turn on a light), for charging on a low-ish bedside table :D

I think the utility of being able to (gently) plonk down an iPhone in an approximate place for ‘wireless’ charging is going to be extremely useful.

Have these people seen how slow and awkward wireless charging is?

How is it more awkward than plugging into a cable. I do that every night and even with a either-side connector like Lightning it's still annoying to have to do. I just don't get why dropping it on a pad is more cumbersome? I drop my AW on a much smaller charging disk and it's a joy over poking my Garmin Forerunner with it's charge cable.

As for slow, some people like myself don't really care because we only charge our device once a day or keep it on a charger at the office. We come home at night, put it to bed, put ourselves to bed. When we wake it's charged up just like us. Same goes for my 12.9" iPad which, believe me, you want slow wired charging, it beats any iPhone all day, everyday.

It's time for you anti-inductive charging people to either make concrete, intelligent reasons why it "sucks" for everyone and is just a gimmick -- it's not the only way to charge any device -- or stop whining and let those who want and like the feature -- just its just one feature of many and no one uses every feature on any product -- to enjoy it.

~1500 for a phone... this is normal..

1,149
199 apple care
~8% tax..

The Motorola StarTAC was $1000 when it was introduced in 1996 (>$1500 inflation-adjusted) - that doesn't include a full-featured service plan like Apple Care. There were cheaper phones then but there are also cheaper iPhones and phones running Android.

However, the StarTAC and the other phones were just phones (although texting and simple games quickly developed). The iPhone is way more useful and replaces all sorts of devices for people: cameras, portable (and non-portable) music players, computers, etc. The cost for what you get is still reasonable. Yes, you can do all that for less money by purchasing a different phone but this is a high-end market-leading phone. You can buy a BMW 5 series or you can buy a Toyota Camry for half the price. Both get you where you need to go. You can buy a $500,000 home or a $280,000 home with both housing you well (I'm pricing outside the crazy markets in CA or NYC or Boston or other places like that).

That being said, I'm not going to buy one.

Funny, I don't care about wireless charging at all. It's actually an inconvenience for me, because when I'm at work and I need a charge, I'll use it while it's plugged in and charging. Having it be flat on a wireless charger wouldn't allow that.

I'm sure it's more convenient for some people, and I may grab one for my night stand, although, I leave my phone face down at lowest brightness at night so any notifications that light up the screen don't bother me while trying to fall asleep. So unless I put it in airplane mode, it would be worse for that too...

Don't you have kids, friends, loved ones? You've seriously never taken more than 5 minutes of video, ever?
I'm not the poster your quoted but I have NEVER taken video with my iPhones, photos yes but no video. I guess because I use it 95%+ of the time as a phone. With scattered usage for things like weather and map features, and a few other apps that I use infrequently. Just an FYI.

Whoa, calm down, I'm not saying it is not a nice to have, only that a feature which is as you said slow as **** and not any more convenient than using a cable should not be the primary reason people pay $1k+ on a phone.

64GB makes a phone unusable for me these days and knowing this Apple decided not to offer a 128GB version, knowing full well that everyone would spend an extra $100 for the 256GB version.

I'd be fine with 128GB and I'm actually kind of upset by this blatant money grab.

I’m honestly impressed that Apple even offered 64. I could see Phil announcing 32 and 512 tbh.

What do you do with 256GB of storage? My iPhone 6 w/ 64GB is only 65% full and I could cut it down easily if I needed to. I'm genuinely curious as I can't figure out why people need so much storage.

And I'm not even filming in 4K yet. If I was, I would approach the 100GB mark already. I take photos and videos all the time and I prefer to keep them on my device.

Sure, but you didn't also get the option of the $300 StarTAC that does most of the same thing.

What's an X do that a 6 doesn't? It does things a bit faster, takes photos that are a bit better, the display is a bit crisper sure, but in terms of outright function, what does it do that a much cheaper phone doesn't?

In the StarTAC days you didn't really have a choice... It was cutting edge, with a price to match. The X is also cutting edge, but it's not... so much of a functionality breakthrough if that makes sense

It is more convenient in some ways and more inconvenient in others:

Pros:
- putting your phone down on a pad is easier and nicer than looking for a cable and finding the phone's port.

Cons:
- it takes longer to charge the phone
- when traveling or moving to a different room you either have to use a regular charger and dig it up from wherever you put it or take the whole thing with you
- you have to align the phone perfectly with the cutout on the back, so it's not like you can just put it down and forget about it, there's still some work / care required.

I'm not saying it's bad Apple included it or that it is a gimmick, I think it's a cool enough idea.
But when the phone costs 1k+ and the charger is not even included, I get to complain :).

Why don't you use "Do not disturb"? It seems just what you need - phone can stay screen up, but won't make a noise or light up the screen. You can enable it automatically with a predefined schedule, or manually. And, with DnD, there is a possibility to still allow ringer for some select people or by repeated calls from one.

Well, nothing new under the sun there. Apple always had a ridiculously low storage option as the 'cheap' one and a huge bump for the next one (see 8GB / 32GB, 16GB / 64GB, 32GB / 128GB). Personally I don't think 64GB is small, I only managed to fill half of that on my phone, but everyone's needs are different.

i don't get why... they finally give phones reasonable storage sizes in a time when everything but apps is saved in the cloud anyways. i have 88 gigs free on my 128gb iPhone 7 plus

So much for those who dissed the attraction of wireless charging.

People will use it for a month and realize how pointless it is. Although, let me take that back. On any other phone it's pointless. But considering it'll be the only way you can listen to music and charge your phone at the same time - if you use the lightning port...
