I have 127GB 7 Plus but I’ll get 64GB X.

256GB way too expensive and I don’t need that much space.not even close to that.
Why waste money.

Whoa, calm down, I'm not saying it is not a nice to have, only that a feature which is as you said slow as **** and not any more convenient than using a cable should not be the primary reason people pay $1k+ on a phone.

Well, so you know the temperature of my posts, I'm not agitated so no need to calm down, and no need for you to reason them as "testy." But it is irritating when people knock a feature because it's not important to them and then attribute non-specific people wanting that feature as uninformed because it's not an important or desirable feature to OP.

So your complete original post was this:

Have these people seen how slow and awkward wireless charging is?

You didn't make any reference to a particular person or persons stating that is the primary/sole/chief reason they are buying a new phone. The MR article makes no reference to anyone stating that is the sole of chief reason they are buying a new phone. As I noted in my original post, it's one of many features in both the 8 and X. The camera and screen seem to be the main features as inductive charging isn't even available out of the box since no charging pad is included.

But even if that was the big reason someone is buying the phone it seems to me they have studied the features and know what they are buying. People don't spit out $1K+ on phones on a whim even if it's in $60 monthly increments.

I see BMWs with BMW Individual paint which cost them $1500+. Not something I'd spend my money on even if the color is drool-worthy. Othertimes it's butt-ugly IMHO. Yuck. But if they enjoy it it's not for me to judge them. And never do I wonder if they new that color cost them 3x+ more than a standard BMW metallic color. People know what they are buying when spending that kind of money no matter how much money they have.

What are people putting on their phones that they need this much storage? And if you do have that much data, why not pay for cloud service and/or streaming services? Maybe if you're constantly shooting videos, but beyond that, why?

I wonder what they use that storage for. I use a 32 GB iPhone with 15 GB free. Spotify takes care of Music, YouTub & Netflix - of Movies and Google Photos - of photo and video library. Plus I have some audio books and offline maps.

I have a 256GB iPhone 7 with about 30GB left on it. I like to keep my music and videos locally stored since I am often in situations where I cant stream content. Planes and Subways kill the streaming option for me and that's where I'm most likely to need my media.

I also use my phone with the lighting to HMDI adapter for viewing TV and Movies on my TV at home and while traveling at hotels.

Why oh why is the base not 128? I'm thinking of going with the 64 myself as 256 is just ridiculous. Especially the increased cost.

I like iCloud and use it a lot (50gb plan). But, it's not a substitute for local storage. Even when I have wifi it's slow, and I don't always have wifi. It's a nice sync solution plus backup for my photos library and some other things, but I also keep everything local (with redundant copies).

I do dislike waiting for videos to load from the cloud to watch them, so I agree with you there. But, iCloud is a must, because if I lose my phone, than everything is still backed up. Also, paying for the higher tier local storage on all of my Apple devices every year over and over again is a big expense. iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, etc...

Just imagine the shock, horror and outright incredulity if Steve Jobs unveiled the very first iPhone at this JAW DROPPING price. $1500 out the door. The internet would have exploded and the product launch would have been a disaster.

But 10 years later, after we've all become addicted to these toys, those of us who can will pony up the cash with barely a whimper (maybe a gripe or two) and chalk up the price hike to 'progress'.

~1500 for a phone... this is normal..

1,149
199 apple care
~8% tax..

Consider yourself lucky not to live in Canada.

1529
249 apple care
1778 x
12% tax
Total $1991

I really have to think hard about wanting to spend this kind of money on a phone.

Am I missing something? The #1 reason I'd get the X is for the dual lens camera (on a phone that fits in my pocket). How could they leave that out?

Streaming is nice but the times I need my music/videos the most are when I don't have internet. I cant stream when in a plane or during my commute on the subway. Streaming also eats up more battery power. With a lower capacity phone, which currently is 64GB, I have to manage my media more often and I simply dont want to think about it every time I'm going to be in a situation with no/poor signal.

I usually purchased the lowest capacity phone up until the 5S. I started to feel the space getting tight so I started to buy the larger capacity going forward. I just checked my 256GB iPhone 7 and I have around 30GB left of free space.

Weird the iPhone X isn’t higher. You woulda though with Iphone 8 demand down it would be holding out for x.

It's because the phone is ridiculously expensive, isn't a major upgrade, and Apple is going wicked downhill since Steve Jobs. Everyone should either get the SE, 7, or 8.

....

(shhh it's okay just let people believe that so preorder day is better for the rest of us.)

I will go low storage on my X and keep 256GB on my iPad Pro (only other computer). I think this works well as the iPad is the only place I would actually watch stored video.

Exactly! why would anyone spend that much (be able to spend that much) and NOT max out the storage.

Because you don't need it? I don't need more than 64GB or Apple Care, so I won't buy it. No reason to spend more than I have to.

Being thrifty, means getting a used 7 with 64Gb, because if you don't think you need more storage than that you probably can't really rationally justify the bells and whistles on an 8 much less an X.

Unusually high 46% of people interested in fake wireless charging that requires a wire.

All this, "it isn't real wireless" is ridiculous. Just what is "real" wireless charging?

As far as I know, the only practical kind of wireless charging that doesn't require a wall plug somewhere is solar cells.

Whether the power cord is connected to some sort of transmitter across the room or a charging pad close at hand, a source of power is required. So, I'd agree that 'wireless charging' is a misnomer. 'Plug-free charging' would be closer.

But once the plug is cut, it's just a matter of how far you can be from the "transmitter" and still receive a practical amount of charging current. So, go ahead, hold out for long-distance plug-less charging. Meantime, anyone who wants something that's available today will have to be satisfied with a charging pad.

Overall, plug-free charging has to be less energy efficient than plugged charging. However, eliminating the wear-and-tear on both the cable and the port will have some benefit, and not fumbling around to mate plug and port will be a bit of a convenience.

Huh? Not sure I understand. I want the X, and everything that comes along with it, but I don't use that much space on my iPhone's. So from your perspective, I should spend more because I can afford a $1,000 phone? I am lost.

That's why I wished more OEMs, not just Apple, used SD slots.

Never going to happen and nor should it.

The type of storage technology used in an iPhone is not the same as the typical SD card technology and even if it was, having removable storage brings with it numerous security issues and device integrity (dust, water ingress) issues. I don't know if it's still the case but not long ago, even android devices which did have SD card slots, could not use these for storing and running applications. There are also a host of software related reasons why removable storage would increase complexity and compromise user experience.

What this really means is, the people who respond to polls about phone purchases tend to buy the most expensive phone available.

Well I have a 7Plus 256 and have about 70-80 GB stored already (music, apps, some reference works and such I want on my phone) so obviously the 256 X will be for me even if they did the 128 I like 256. I eventually tend to fill much of what have ;-)

Once you start using QI wireless charging your opinion will change. We have them in conference rooms at my company and it's really convenient to just sit your phone down on the pad. It's also nice having one next to the bed so you just drop your phone on it.

What I don't understand is this apparent need to always be charging your phone! Maybe it's because I have a 7 plus but here I am at 6:36pm, having been working since 10am and my battery is still at 89%. So when I'm in a meeting I just leave my phone in my pocket and pay attention to what's being discussed.

256gb iPhone X, that’s the go big or go home smart phone.

Exactly. For $150 more you get the whole thing.
If you arguing to pay $999 + $199 for AppleCare+ then you might as well spend the extra $150 to max out storage.
Anything els is silly.

Go Big or Go Home!

Why 256 GB?

Because 512GB or 1 TB aren’t available.

This!

What an utterly insulting survey, over half of potential customers HAVE NO CHOICE but to get the 256GB model because Apple scrapped the 128GBone...

In fact this story is nothing more then an insulting attempt to ‘appologise’ for Apple and it’s price gouging..
