Weird the iPhone X isn’t higher. You woulda though with Iphone 8 demand down it would be holding out for x.

Not if you take into account the amount of other iPhones sold. Some people like me are upgrading to the 7 since it’s cheaper and offers most of the best aspects of the 8

Hardly a surprise. Who is going to pay over 1K for a 64GB phone? I’m in disbelief that Apple would even offer the X with so little storage. It should have been 128/256 not 64/256.

I personally am coming from a 256 phone so there’s no chance I’m downgrading from there.

It's hard to believe most potential iPhone X users will be willing to pay higher than the base-price model. The reason I say this is because of all the news media and critics were whining and moaning about how the iPhone X is too expensive for mere mortals. Jaw-dropping, teeth clenching, neck-snapping, eye-popping and gut-wrenching pricing were some of the expressions being used for a $1000 iPhone. Seriously, those people are so retarded. There are so many devices that are more expensive than an iPhone. If someone were to pay $1000 for an iPhone and get good use out of it for three years, I don't see how that is too much to pay for a solid, quality device. I'm not saying consumers should replace a $1000 smartphone every year. That's somewhat foolish if their iPhone is in good condition. Buy a quality device and keep it for a decent length of time. That's good for the ecology.

I understand if the Chinese consumer doesn't want to pay the equivalent of $1000 for a smartphone. They're mostly going to be using a smartphone to run WeChat, anyway. They don't need any flagship smartphone for that purpose. It's good to hear the Chinese consumer is loyal and buying some domestic brand smartphone. That's good for their country. The Chinese consumers don't dislike iPhones, they're probably just being sensible and buying some domestic Chinese smartphone they can easily afford and still have a useful device. I don't know what the Chinese economy is like nowadays but at one time they were begging for Apple to set up retail stores in China so maybe financially, things are a lot tougher for the Chinese consumer. I'll bet if more research is done, they'd find out that the Chinese consumers are cutting corners any way they can and not just for Apple products.

I believe and hope all models of the iPhone will sell in decent numbers this year. Maybe there won't be some 'supercycle' but I'm sure sales will be decent for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X. Will they exceed last year's sales? It's too early to tell until the iPhone X is released.

I don't like how there's such a difference between the two sizes. However, I get the business aspect of it. Make a phone with not enough storage so that they could upsell you a much more expensive one. Plus, how much more expensive is the 256GB component cost compared to the 64GB? Apple's probably making profit hand over fist. A 128GB or SD card option would deal a serious blow to Apple's profit margin.

What I don't understand is this apparent need to always be charging your phone! Maybe it's because I have a 7 plus but here I am at 6:36pm, having been working since 10am and my battery is still at 89%. So when I'm in a meeting I just leave my phone in my pocket and pay attention to what's being discussed.
No need to upgrade from a 7 to an 8/X IMO. It may be worth it if you're coming from a <=6 though. Wireless charging is very nice. We are very, very dependent on our phones in by business. I can certainly understand how they are distractions in other industries.

I’m not to sure about this numbers here. I’m thinking that people are not going to be in line like they normally be every year. This year iPhone is not really a WOW factor.

Of course...why does the 64GB model even exist on a phone that costs 1K?

Well, that is obvious... So they can announce prices start at $999 whilst knowing that at least half the market will be forced to spend far more because the base offering is (deliberately) inadequate for most. That is obvious, isn't it? It has been their strategy for years.

I love comment threads after posts about unscientific investment bank polls of random people.

Everyone said:
Clearly the tea leaves support the position I've always held!

Not sure I understand why some can't accept that someone doesn't need more than 64GB of storage, or that it makes for a less than ideal experience somehow. If you don't need the storage, why pay for it?

Facial recognition second attractive feature? I wouldn't have thought that based on the discussions here at MR :)

To read MacRumors, you'd think Apple was the worst company to have ever exist in the world.

There's never been a "fan site" with a worse attitude about the thing they are supposedly fans of.

Never going to happen and nor should it.

The type of storage technology used in an iPhone is not the same as the typical SD card technology and even if it was, having removable storage brings with it numerous security issues and device integrity (dust, water ingress) issues. I don't know if it's still the case but not long ago, even android devices which did have SD card slots, could not use these for storing and running applications. There are also a host of software related reasons why removable storage would increase complexity and compromise user experience.

I haven't ran into issues with my Note 8 regarding SD usage. The easier reason why Apple will never use SD cards is because why hurt profit margins when many are willing to pay the premium to get a higher storage capacity?

What's an X do that a 6 doesn't? It does things a bit faster, takes photos that are a bit better, the display is a bit crisper sure, but in terms of outright function, what does it do that a much cheaper phone doesn't?

I agree, and that's the beauty of smartphones having become a mature product category. The $350 iPhone SE does almost everything the X does, albeit not quite as well. Spend another $350 to go to the iPhone 8 and you've got basically everything the x has, minus the edge to edge OLED screen, dual camera, and facial recognition. The last 30% of the price adds maybe a few % of the total functionality, as I see it.

Of course, one could say the same for cars, TVs, designer clothes, etc. The highest end goods are never the best "value," but some people just want the best, period.

But, iCloud is a must, because if I lose my phone, than everything is still backed up. Also, paying for the higher tier local storage on all of my Apple devices every year over and over again is a big expense. iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, etc...

Agreed, and that's why I do backup most things to iCloud.

I guess the cost depends on how often you replace your devices. My mac is 4 years old and my iPad is 3. (My iPhone is less than a year because it was a gift.) I'm in going to keep things that long, I want to get the storage needs right. The upgrades are expensive but not that much over the life of the device. The hit is bigger if you upgrade every year.

Once you start using QI wireless charging your opinion will change. We have them in conference rooms at my company and it's really convenient to just sit your phone down on the pad. It's also nice having one next to the bed so you just drop your phone on it.

The Qi is great on the nightstand. If I’m on the couch, I use a 2m lightning cable. In our new car, drop it on the Qi shelf, and in my truck, plug it in ( no Qi ).

Apple killing 128gb is forcing people to the 256gb, I have almost filled my 64gb 6+ and my next iPhone was going to be 128gb but no Apple makes me pay for more than I need. Also £949 for the 256gb 8+, sorry too much money for me will be a second hand iPhone for me or "shudder" an Android phone, I can get the galaxy s8 for just over £500 brand new with the trade in plan and throw in a 64gb micro SD for basically half the price of the iphone 8+ 256gb

Maybe he exists in the world of less than one month ago where the most expensive 256GB iPhone was $969.
Essentially the end user is now paying the 100+ tax that Apple hands over to Samsung for their screen tech being in iPhone X. Another reason to wait till next year.

My last apple phones were $300 and $99 (I did buy though ATT and Cricket respectively with incentives). Since there are no incentives anymore they phones seem crazy expensive to a lot of people which I fully agree with. $1k+ out of pocket for a phone is a lot of money.

But it’s not a phone. It’s a pocket computer. If all you want is a phone, there are plenty of very cheap, even free, options. But you (and the rest of us) don’t want a phone. We want a pocket computer that also takes great pictures, provides navigation, entertains us, and allows us to get productive work done. I don’t hear people complaining about the cost of a new MacBook the way they complain about phone prices. And I bet most people use their phones more than their MacBooks.

And more than half of these people claiming to buy won't once the dates slip into end of Q1 2018, which they most certainly will. The website will say 6-8 weeks but they'll take even longer.
if people order on the dot they will likely not need to wait that long. Get in quick and it will be fine.

What do you do with 256GB of storage? My iPhone 6 w/ 64GB is only 65% full and I could cut it down easily if I needed to. I'm genuinely curious as I can't figure out why people need so much storage.

If you shoot 4k video or take a LOT of pictures that you don't off load you could use a lot of memory. There may be apps that eat large chunks of data but I don't know of any such apps myself.

I can’t figure out why people want to pay monthly to access their files and media when they could have it on their device.
