Are these sites such as PassSource.com legit? I've read a few reviews that say you should just go to passsource.com in Safari on iOS and just make your own cards for Passbook. I just feel like it's a little sketchy to be listing all of my account numbers and personal data on a site that's new to me.

Also, is the big picture of Passbook to have the iOS apps send stuff to Passbook like Fandango and Target is doing? Or is it meant to be a new platform for startups like PassSource to construct sites that allow businesses to create their own Passbook cards?

Apple should have iTunes Gift Card as Passbook compatible. Why doesn't that the case?

Inside the Target app, click the Target logo at bottom of screen. Go to My Target, enroll in mobile coupons, once registered, you can pull up the coupons inside the app and they have option to send to Passbook.

Got it thanks. What about Walgreens & fandango

Curious about this as well. I am definitely hesitant to forking over this kind of information to a random website...

Got my ticketmaster app to work with passbook. Two tickets for a dispatch concert! Hopefully its this easy with all the other apps.

The big picture is indeed to do it all through an iOS app (or through Safari, like the Virgin Australia traveler who was prompted to add his/her boarding pass to Passbook while pulling up the boarding pass in Safari). Sources such as PassSource were always supposed to be more of a playground to experience Passbook. Sure, you can definitely use PassSource to load all your loyalty cards into Passbook, but they're not going to have any of the benefits of said cards.

For example, you can load a Starbucks card into Passbook using PassSource, that's no problem. But the balance on said card will not update because it isn't pulling your card information from Starbucks' servers like it would through the Starbucks app. When Starbucks updates their app to support Passbook, using your Starbucks card through Passbook will change the balance in Passbook precisely because it's accessing Starbucks' servers.

There's nothing stopping start-ups from cashing in on Passbook management for larger companies. But I'd think it would be best to stick only with "authorized" passes from sources you can trust instead of using sites that will generate passes for you, if only for privacy concerns and the benefits of using "authorized" passes.

tl;dr PassSource is a playground at the moment and nothing more. If you have privacy concerns about handing over your information to a third-party site to create passes, wait until those companies officially support Passbook.

This is so stupid...I got target app installed and sent coupons to passbook. Now how do I make it show up so I can click on the App Store link again? All I see now is the coupon. I went into info and tried some things there but I don't see it.

Yeah I'd also like to know how to get back to this!

I honestly thought PassSource was merely a demo site for end users and developers to learn how PassBook works. I didn't really expect any passes to actually work self-updating or not, but now i think I'll enter my Starbucks card and try to make a purchase via PassBook. If it doesn't work, then I'll just play dumb and pull up the Starbucks app instead.

If I can use PassSource to make myself a phony boarding pass and get on a plane or even past the TSA, I think we have a problem...

We have to download a separate app for each card we want to have in our Passbook?! That just sounds sloppy/clunky.

I'd rather there be a Cards category in the AppStore and all the cards would simply appear in my Passbook, no duplicate apps required.

Is that not how it works?!

Totally agree. I thought Passbook was going to be similar to Cardstar, which does basically the same thing. I like to have all my loyalty cards & account numbers in one place.

Passbook looks like its more an extension of existing apps (like Target) to easily place coupons and tickets. Nice, but seems limiting.

This app could have been executed much better. Shocking that you cannot simply add cards as you need them. There is no way im going install a slew of other apps I dont want, just to connect them to passbook. I hope I can just scan a starbucks card or just send it to my Passbook via a website.

It would be nice if you could use Passbook without needing to download an app for every pass. Or can you?

Apparently not. I can't believe Apple didn't think through the design more carefully.

Designing Passbook like this is like making NFC users carry their credit cards around. It's redundant, silly, and kinda defeats the purpose!

As long as PassSource generates the barcode used by Starbucks correctly from your card number, it'll work. I doubt phony boarding passes will work because those are checked against the airline's systems.

It's possible to add passes to Passbook through Safari so long as the proper .pkpass is generated. That would bypass the company's app entirely--so long as the company chooses to offer that option.

For example, you could go to Best Buy's mobile site, log in, generate a .pkpass of your reward zone card, and add that to Passbook. This is definitely a possibility, though the decision to offer that is entirely up to the company. As discussed before, companies would likely rather you keep their apps, whether because of ads, making their customer base look nice and healthy, or whatever other reason.
