How much battery life would the pebble have if it had no screen? :) You just plug it into your computer to get the time and other info ..

Totally different category of wearables imho

I have a Pebble watch and I actually like it! It was an original kickstarter, and I swapped the band out for one I like better and have enjoyed it for a long time now. It's reliable, fun to customize, useful on bike rides, swimming, etc. The display is always on and I even kind of like the look.

I am an Apple fan, and the Apple watch is definitely intriguing, but I really hope that Pebble sticks around. Their product is a good fit as it:

  • Is reasonably priced (now $99 for the basic)
  • Has LONG battery life
  • Is WATERPROOF!!

I can't believe the 1st gen Apple Watch isn't going to be waterproof. That might be my biggest con so far. Pebble managed it. As a friend of mine also commented, cheap Casios and lots of other watches (even with crowns, buttons, and dials) all do it. I am in the ocean, pools etc. all the time, and having to take my watch off and find a safe dry place for it each time I jump in? I hope Apple fixes that soon.

Anyway- I am excited to see the Apple watch, but kudos to Pebble for striking out and putting a good (if basic) smartwatch on the map that works with iOS. They had a big hill to climb and have come up with something pretty cool. I hope they keep at it.

Yes waterproof. My $7.00 self winding Timex from the early 1970s has survived childhood abuse, has been in saltwater all over the world, and still works fine, losing 40 seconds a day as it always has. Oh for the days when great things were made in America. What happened?

Jony: To breath is to be human, and for the first time, when I first put on the Apple Watch you instinctively know it was amazing. Because. *looks to camera* that too my breath away ...*grin*

Why is Pebble advertising the Apple Watch as a style item that its designer stresses over? That is the takeaway from the ad, that Pebble is calling itself an unstylish utilitarian watch. Why would Pebble focus attention on Apple ? I don't get it from Pebble's POV.

I have a Pebble. I really never wear it. It's ok. Even after this sdk came out and their apps I felt like it wasn't that great. And it isn't very stylish. It also has gotten marked up a little. And I didn't wear it that much for it to look kind of dumpy.

However, I would say that the Pebble will end up looking/being like a $20 Timex or Swatch vs. the Apple Watch which will be more like a $500-1000 Citizen, Victorinox, or Movado. And yes I do realize that Timex and Swatch do make some more expensive watches too.

The lack of waterproofing on the Apple Watch surprised me too. They hyped the fact about the SIP being completely sealed but so what if the rest of it isn't waterproof?

On another note, even with the lower pricing, the Pebble's pricing scheme actually does a lot to counter claims of the Apple watch being over priced. If pebble seems going from a plastic face to a metal face as being worth $100 all by itself, surely the addition of everything Apple brings (much higher build quality, heart rate monitor, sapphire cover on the sensor, colour display, gorilla glass, vastly "smarter" OS and UI, tight integration with iPhone, NFC Apple pay, etc) is worth at least the same $100 on top and easily more.

Hardly, Pebble is here today and in the hands of thousands of folk and is far more affordable. I don't see Pebble going away any time soon, especially not at their new price vs. Apple's $350, just like cheaper Android phones haven't gone away (and Pebble watches are cross-platform).
I think you make the opposite point. They have been out for 2 years and could only get a few thousand buyers. Apple is gearing up to sell 10s of millions in the first year.

As a Kickstarter Pebble backer I will say this: I may not want an Apple Watch, but these guys are not even in the same league. It's never worked as advertised. It's been buggy as all get out, to the point of not working for what I needed, and the functionality that I bought it for wasn't available until well over a year after it's release.

Pebble was a fail, IMO. It sits on my dresser, never being charged or used. $115 sports watch that needs charging every 5-6 days.

Gee Pebble, maybe if your designers were a little more excited about their work, then consumers would be a little more excited about your product. Just a thought.

I think it's just inexperience. They're a young company. Last year they were riding a wave. This year looking at death. It can't be easy.

But they are destroying their brand with this approach. And the brand would be worth something should they want to move into other wearables.

As in the past, people say Apple's product is "overpriced" and "no one will buy it"

While I don't think I'll be getting an Apple Watch (or any other watch), many people will, bc Apple's combo of hardware and software will get it right.

People will be lined up out the door for them as usual. Apple will have "record sales" and make millions then we'll learn how somebody can easily crack the screen by sitting on them. #crackgate :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Companies who make ads that poke fun of other companies are just scared of them.

Surely you remember the "I'm a Mac" ads, right? It wasn't that long ago.

And no Apple keynote goes by without them making fun of Android.

So that means Apple must be in a constant state of fear of Microsoft and Google.

I thought I wouldn't care about the apple watch at all. Then I seen it. Now I want it. Its actually very attractive and does everything you could need it to do. We just need 3rd party watch faces.

The ad seems to have a twist of irony, intended or not, being that all Pebble sells is smart watches. I mean it literally is "just" a watch for Apple. It will survive, even if it lives w/ an enduring black eye if the Apple watch is a bust. If the Pebble watch sales go down hill so does Pebble, being a one trick pony company right now.

Can manufacturers not advertise on their products own merits? Must they always make cheap swipes at Apple?

You mean how Apple makes cheap swipes at Android during every keynote instead of advertising on their products own merits?

Yup, it's exactly like that.

I'm not so sure the Pebble folks ever knew how to properly run a business. I preordered a Pebble watch over two years ago, and they never did get back to me. Then I saw one in person and was pretty underwhelmed.

Haters gonna hate.... Even if the iWatch isn't the greatest thing in the whole wide world, at least it's more competition out there! It will only get better with time. I personally think that the iWatch is cool. Maybe it doesn't blow the competition out of the water, but give it some time!

Former Pebble owner and developer checking in. Their watch is an overpriced toy that feels more like a hobby than a finished product. I'm glad they're frightened. Maybe it'll propel them to put out a better product.

If you can do it confidently and cockily then yes, you can pull it off.

This one just reeks of panic.

Uhh, all of Apple's swipes at their competition reek of panic. All of their Android jokes, those constant "I'm a Mac" advertisements.

Nothing but fear in those.

I really like their new website, it's really funny.. Nice and immature like myself :) Kudos to them for daring to do that.

I'm one of the kickstarter backers of Pebble and the main reason I backed it was the always-on display. I still don't like watches were you need to do something to just see the time. Though I might let myself be tempted by the Apple watch :D

One thing I did notice though, with this "price drop" of the steel version you now only get the leather band, the steel one is now an extra $20. Previously both were included with the steel pebble. A bit sneaky though I'd never use the steel one anyway: my arms are pretty hairy and I don't like the depilating effects of steel bands ;) So it would suit me fine.

I'm still going to wait out Apple's watch though before considering an upgrade.

Edit: Another uncool thing is that they translate $200 (158 euro at present) to 229 euro :/ I know a bit of that's VAT but really it's not THAT high. Ripoff

Edit2: Aha, I just noticed that the steel bands are not available in the EU and the watches don't say 'leather band only' like for the US. So it could be that the EU models are old stock with the steel band still included. That would almost cover the price difference. The plastic models are still super overpriced though.
