One week battery one a black and white dull screen, congrats.

That "black and white dull screen" is more than addiquate for displaying notifications and applets. More over its a persistant display which is readable in virtually any lighting condition.
(I can pretty much gaurantee you that the :apple:Watch will wash out in sunlight)

Former Pebble owner and developer checking in. Their watch is an overpriced toy that feels more like a hobby than a finished product. I'm glad they're frightened. Maybe it'll propel them to put out a better product.

Honestly, they shouldn't be frightened; they should have been prepared for this moment. They had to know what was coming down the road when they launched on Kickstarter because even then there was murmurings of and Apple watch and other companies making iOS compatible bands. What they need to do now is focus on Android. That is their best play going forward.

Uhh, all of Apple's swipes at their competition reek of panic. All of their Android jokes, those constant "I'm a Mac" advertisements.

Nothing but fear in those.

No. More like ambition. Altogether more positive.

And they were quite entertaining too. No so this.

No, ambition would be presenting your product with confidence, not presenting your product while making swipes at your competition.

There's nothing ambitious about that. There's just fear in that.

Considering their hardware is more on the basic side of things and the market seems to be moving towards less basic devices even thou it means a battery life of about a day, I suppose you can make the judgement that they're probably screwed.

I for one haven't worn a watch for over a decade, so I can't see myself getting one even if they get the battery life to over a week. The only exception was when I did my mandatory military service, but there everyone got a watch because you weren't allowed to carry your phone with you, but you still needed to keep track of time.

This exactly. This company's days are very numbered. It might survive for awhile based on price alone.. but I doubt it will be for long.

:apple:

Unlike the Apple Watch, the pebble doesn't need very specific phones to make it useful. Will work on Android and iPhone, not just a few models of the iPhones.

There's still quite a large market out there for Pebble to concentrate on. The battery life + available apps is still a good draw for potential customers.

Weird PR move. "None of these products, including ours, is that cool. Nobody get excited about anything, including our product! Seriously, these products -- including our product -- are not that great."

Yeah, very strange.

Also they are taking the angle of being against Apple, which for a company like Samsung is a perfect concept, but for Pebble they are hurting a large segment of their user base by taking a dig at the company users support.

Apple and Pebble really are not direct competitors at this stage in the game. Apple is selling a premium product with their watches designed to be a computer on your wrist and Pebble is a notification device at a reasonable price.

People won't be comparing the two when picking which to buy. Either they want what Pebble does and is or they want what Apple Watch does and is. They aren't the same product.

Downloading the Pebble update now! Wish Fitbit would play ball. I don't want to have to join a new group.

FYI I think this is a great move by Pebble! $99 is a very palatable price for their device and finally makes their watch a MUST buy for any techy types. If they keep up with these great upgrades I'll surely be sticking with my Pebble until the 2nd gen of the Apple Watch.

Fair enough. We'll disagree on that then.

I had a look at their website. What's with the crude microsoft-paint-in-the-late-1980's graphics? It's like a parody of amateur website design. So edgy, it's fallen over the edge.

And when did Jony stop breathing? Or are they just making that up?

I think it's a cute ad

I agree. I think it's all in good fun. As for anyone saying the Apple watch will overshadow the Pebble, it is hard to say because it is not yet out. So far it has already lost me because I still need my phone when I go jogging.

Kind of seems stupid to target one person like this. Just like the Samsung commercial that mentions Apple by name. How often does a company run a commercial where they mention the competition by name? One thing is for sure...Other companies are quite obsessed with Apple.

I love my Pebble - got one used for about $80 a few weeks ago. So nice for 2-factor authentication stuff.

Heh, it's dropped to what I paid for in the Kickstarter.

I dunno how screwed they are. I use a Pebble now and it does everything I need it to (music remote, notifications) excellently, is water resistant to 50 metres, has a week-long battery charge, and is readable in daylight perfectly. Those are things I want in a watch. Maybe I'm in the minority? Heh.

All the other smartwatch MFG's owe Pebble for proving there's a market. They're literally THE token kickstarter success story.

That said, I own a Steel and it's practically obsolete tech. They haven't upgraded the guts since the original Kickstarter. Storage capacity is still an 8 app max, each watchface counts as an app. Storefront is as slow as a webapp over 3G. None of the advanced biometrics or AI in the latest round of smartwatches is in there, and I don't think Pebble has any biometric or AI assets to exploit.

Only plus is the eReader display if you want max battery life or an always on display. But since smartwatches are quickly becoming a commodity, the thing is overpriced at $200. They need a new product or they're gonna get kicked out of the market.

I believe that's a reference to the relatively low-res LCD in their product.

Also, notice that they don't have any pictures of sharper than-real displays or better contrast than is achievable, their pictures look realistic with a fairly grey background (for some of them it actually looks better in real life). I like that about them, they don't try to make it better than it is.
