I too got a message with a reserved. There are no links to check. And I also have no idea what line this is for as I bought 2 phones (which was a disaster in itself.)
I placed an order that was confirmed. So i don't know what the deal is with this. Since I have a confirmation that my phone will come 2-3 weeks. I'm going to hold out and see.
 
Can I have multiple orders tied to one line? I do not need to pay off the line. On each order I used the pay in full option.
Would this mean that it is possible or not?
 
I got the reservation emails but when I click the link to complete the order, I get the following error:

"We’re sorry. We can’t find your reservation. Please verify your information and try again."

Has anyone else ran into this?

Exactly my scenario. I have another reservation with my same phone number. But can't I just swap the wife's sim into that phone?

This is not only an AT&T issue. I am having this problem and my carrier is Verizon. I tried preordering using the Apple App, and paying in full. I did it as soon as the App Store went live for me. I got my first email but no second email yet.

Disregard the reservation email? When did you place your order? When did you get the reservation emails and what’s your delivery date?
 
I was up at 12:01am to order my X but like many, I also got the error message several times and eventually received the message that a phone would be reserved for me to complete the check out later. Not knowing if this would save a place for me in line or not, I kept trying until I finally got though with a delivery date of the 17th to the 24th. While I would have liked to get it on the 3rd (who wouldn't), it wasn't a big deal and went back to sleep.

When I woke up a few hours later, I received two emails with my reservation number to complete my order. So out of curiosity, I went though the steps but because I had eventually placed an order several hours ago, the system would not let me place another order. I also was not able to see what the expected delivery would be with my "reserved" phone. Well, because I wasn't in a hurry to get the new phone, I decided to gamble and cancel my order from my first attempt and reorder using the reservation number in the email. I just waited a few minutes after canceling and the system let me place my order with a delivery date of the 3rd. Awesome!

I did get that "reserved" message fairly early during my original attempt this morning (about 12:07am Pacific) which is why I figured there was a good chance I would at least maintain my allocation or potentially improve it a bit, which is what happened. So if anyone got their "reserved" message early in the order attempt process, you might want to try it but no guarantees of course!

So when/if I get my link to order my reserved phone, should I cancel my ordered phone and go through with that process instead?

Placed my order about 12:20 AM.
Received an email at 12:27 AM saying "We're processing your order" with estimated delivery of Nov 17-24.
Received an email 2:41 AM saying "Your iPhone has been reserved" and to expect a second email to complete the order. The second email never came.
My order status at 6AM was "order placed" and then changed to "order in progress."

Chat rep said to disregard the reservation email and that my order is proceeding forward with my estimated delivery date.

Edit: I was doing pay in full AT&T

Are these reservations mostly with folks who just came off ATT Next?

Maybe this is ATT's way to get Apple back from last year...
No not all are from AT&T Next. I had 2 separate AT&T iPhone X orders, both were full price on different phone numbers. One went through and the second one got deferred into this Reserve Bin. This happens every year when there is any hiccup in the communication between Apple and a carrier.

Question. Has anyone cancelled a second order and had the phone number freed up in order for the reserved order to work?

I think I saw a few of you did the same thing I did. I wasn't expecting the reserved message, and at the time some things were timing out...it was just a couple minutes after the store went online. I wasn't sure if I really ordered a phone or not. Went ahead and went through the process again. Got the regular confirmation, but by that time the shipping had slipped to 2-3 weeks.

This morning I see I received two messages for the reserved phone. Clicked on the complete button but I couldn't finish the order because it found another order, the second one, using the same phone number.

The phone is for my wife, so I'd kinda like to have it for her on the release date...which I believe would happen with the reserved order. Not a biggie, but the IUP for my phone when through and will be in the first wave.

Have you been able to resolve this? Same thing happened to me so I canceled the second 2-3 week order so I could complete the reservation order for Nov 3rd using AT&T Next, only it keeps telling me I'm not eligible for Next (I'm assuming because it's still hung up on that first order when contacting AT&T for status.) I've spent 3 hours this morning talking with AT&T about resetting my Next eligibility and they now say that I'm eligible for upgrade again, however when I try the reservation link I still get the same message about not being eligible for AT&T Next. Now I'm on hold with Apple...

Your first email should have a reservation number and a "You may check the status of your reservation at any time by visiting here" sentence. I would check to see if it tells you that you already have an order associated with your phone number. If so, its up to you to decide to risk slipping or gaining ground on your order. However, if it says it can't find a matching reservation number, do not cancel your first order!!!
 
I can confirm that the reservation HOLDS your spot in line.

I canceled my order and used the reservation instead and got an earlier delivery date. Be aware that your carrier may not be aware of your order being canceled and will prevent you from using the reservation.

Placed 2 orders using the app. No emails whatsoever.

Got a reservation and no communication either. Refreshing the status page gives me the same stale info.

I'm glad to know that the reservation holds my spot in line. However I know for a fact i entered in the wrong last 4 of the SS number of the main account holder so hopefully i can fix this issue when it is my turn in line. I'll enter in for my ATT provider SS the last 4 of the main account holder, then for the Apple Upgrade Program, obviously my SS #

I'm not sure if your reservation will go through or not, but it does ask for your carrier info again to re-verify.
